KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The Global Automotive Technology Expo (GATE) 2025 is set to attract around RM500 million in terms of trade and investment value, said its co-organiser, the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii).
MARii chief executive officer Azrul Reza Aziz said the expo (exposition) targets higher trade activities from the automotive sector supply chains and foresees the potential to integrate semiconductor into the automotive sector.
He said GATE 2025 would serve as a business matching platform where local automotive vendors could directly engage with global players.
'It will be a global gathering point for industry players who are actively seeking to increase localisation and source components for their global supply chains.
'Local players can find the opportunity to export their products overseas as well,' he told reporters after the GATE 2025 Premiere event here today.
He also expected more international collaborations with up to 10 memoranda of understanding to be exchanged during the event.
'We also anticipate a 70 per cent local and 30 per cent international vendor participation, reflecting our dual commitment to elevating Malaysia's domestic capabilities while creating strong opportunities for technology transfer and foreign collaboration,' he said.
Azrul Reza also said GATE 2025 is on track to welcome over 350 companies and 20,000 visitors from China, France, Germany, and other key markets across Europe, the Middle East and ASEAN.
Currently, up to 60 per cent of 350 companies have confirmed their participation for the event, he said.

Foreign investors net bought US$389.4mil of Asian equities last week

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign investors continued to net buy Asian stocks for the second consecutive week, recording a net inflow of US$389.4 million, according to MBSB Investment Bank Bhd. In its Fund Flow Report for the week ended Aug 15, 2025, it reported that only India and Thailand registered net foreign outflows, while all other countries saw net inflows. South Korea recorded the largest inflow at US$587.5 million after President Lee Jae Myung and the United States (US) President Donald Trump announced their first summit meeting on Aug 25 in Washington to discuss strengthening alliances and economic security partnership. "Based on the tariff deal reached last month, the two leaders will advance partnership in the manufacturing sector, including in semiconductors, batteries and shipbuilding, as well as critical minerals and technology,' it said. Leaders of South Korea and Vietnam also pledged to deepen economic cooperation. Indonesia also posted net buying activities for the second straight week with a US$412.3 million inflow after signing a free trade agreement with Peru on Monday in Jakarta. Similarly, Taiwan posted a net inflow of US$90.4 million, marking an eighth consecutive week and the longest foreign buying streak since the start of available data in 2021. In contrast, India recorded the region's largest outflow at -US$347.8 million, extending its losing streak to five weeks for the first time since March 2025. Nonetheless, despite the foreign withdrawals, S&P Global Ratings upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating to "BBB' from "BBB-', the first upgrade in 18 years, citing strong economic growth, improved monetary policy credibility and sustained fiscal consolidation. On the domestic front, the investment bank said foreign investors extended their net selling streak for the sixth consecutive week with a net outflow of -RM566.1 million, marking a 50 per cent drop from last week's RM1.14 billion outflow. "Foreign investors were net sellers on every trading day, with outflows ranging from -RM94.0 million to -RM167.4 million. "The largest outflow was recorded on Friday, followed by Thursday with -RM103.5 million, Tuesday with -RM101.5 million and Monday with -RM99.8 million, while Wednesday recorded the smallest outflow," it said. The top three sectors that recorded net foreign inflows were plantation (RM77.7 million), property (RM52.7 million) and financial services (RM42.2 million). Meanwhile, the top three sectors that recorded the highest net foreign outflows were utilities (-RM209.5 million), telecommunication and media (-RM185.5 million) and healthcare (-RM152.7 million). - Bernama

Ringgit opens firmer against US dollar amid rate cut expectations

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8 am, the local currency traded at 4.2050/2260, up from Friday's close of 4.2085/2155. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened slightly firmer against the US dollar on Monday as market sentiment leaned towards a potential US interest rate cut. At 8 am, the local currency traded at 4.2050/2260, up from Friday's close of 4.2085/2155. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted growing expectations for a September rate reduction by the US Federal Reserve. 'Given that consumer spending accounted for more than two-thirds of the US economy, the case for a September rate cut is gaining more steam,' he told Bernama. The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 58.6 points in August from 61.7 points the previous month. Other indicators, including the Current Condition Index and the Expectation Index, also declined in August. 'This suggests that consumer spending will likely weaken, while higher prices due to increased import tariffs may prevent them from splurging,' he added. The ringgit could test the psychological RM4.20 level against the US dollar today. A perceived delay in Fed rate cuts has weakened the US dollar in the near term, with the US Dollar Index hovering at 97.850 points. Against major currencies, the ringgit strengthened except against the euro, where it depreciated to 4.9224/9470 from Friday's 4.9185/9267. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8557/8701 from 2.8653/8702 and gained versus the British pound to 5.6999/7283 from 5.7050/7145. The local currency also performed well against regional peers. It appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.2777/2944 from 3.2820/2877 and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9361/13.0091 from 12.9760/13.0032. The ringgit improved against the Philippine peso to 7.36/7.41 from 7.37/7.39 and remained stable against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.0/261.4 * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Bursa Malaysia Rebounds To Open Slightly Higher

WORLD KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia rebounded from last week's losses to open marginally higher today, driven by mild buying interest in selected heavyweights, a dealer said. At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) inched up 0.41 of a point to 1,576.75 from Friday's close of 1,576.34. The benchmark index opened 1.92 points firmer at 1,578.26. However, the market breadth was slightly negative, with decliners leading advancers 161 to 136. A total of 308 counters were unchanged, 1,981 untraded and six suspended. Turnover stood at 83.43 million shares worth RM36.44 million. Tracking the positive performance of Wall Street's index futures, Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd expected the local bourse to start the week positively. 'Wall Street ended broadly lower on Friday, as weaker retail sales and a sharp rise in inflation expectations pressured the markets. On the geopolitical front, talks between Trump and Putin in Alaska regarding a peace plan for Ukraine concluded without a breakthrough, although Trump struck an optimistic tone. 'Sector-wise, we believe the construction and utility segments will continue to outperform, as IJM recently secured its largest data centre project worth RM1.4 billion in Johor, bringing its total order book to RM9.2 billion,' it said in a note today. Among the heavyweight stocks, Maybank was flat at RM9.80, Public Bank fell 1.0 sen to RM4.44, CIMB slipped 3.0 sen to RM7.22, while Tenaga Nasional added 4.0 sen to RM13.66 and RMIHH Healthcare improved 1.0 sen to RM6.83.
