Teacher charged with killing of hikers at Arkansas park pleads not guilty to murder
Andrew James McGann entered the plea during a brief hearing before a state judge at Washington County's jail Monday morning. Circuit Judge Joanna Taylor scheduled McGann's next hearing for Nov. 14. He's being held without bond.
McGann has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the July 26 killing of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41. The two were hiking with their daughters — ages 7 and 9 years old — and the girls were not injured in the attack.
Authorities have not publicly identified a motive for the attack at Devil's Den, a 2,500-acre (1,000-hectare) state park about 140 miles (220 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock.
McGann was arrested on July 30 at a barbershop in Springdale, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of the park.
McGann had not yet started his new job at Springdale Public Schools and had previously worked in Texas and Oklahoma. Authorities have said he did not have a prior criminal record.
State Police have said McGann admitted to the killings shortly after his arrest and that investigators matched his DNA to blood found at the crime scene.

'Abusive' man who murdered partner before attempting to stage false scene convicted after police uncover lies
An 'abusive' man from west London who murdered his partner before attempting to stage a false scene has been convicted after police uncovered his lies. Rita Fleming, 70, was found by parademics unresponsive in a bath at her home in Maida Hill, Kensington on June 23, 2024 after being killed by Clifford Cowen, 59. She was fully dressed and covered in severe injuries, prompting the Metropolitan Police to launch an investigation. But Cowen claimed to have been concerned for Ms Fleming's welfare after looking through the letterbox of her property. He repeatedly insisted officers check CCTV footage to prove he had not been at the address, prompting police to arrest him at the scene. Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who led the Met's investigation, said it soon transpired he was a 'controlling and abusive partner' who attempted to portray the pair's relationship as a loving one. Scotland Yard later uncovered messages and voice notes indicating that Cowen would regularly get drunk and verbally abuse Fleming. We understand how isolated victims of domestic abuse can feel Alison Foxwell Cowen was charged with murder and found guilty following the conclusion of a four-week trial at the Old Bailey, taking a jury just six hours to reach their verdict. DCI Foxwell added: "He attempted to cover up his actions with an elaborate alibi, however officers were able to unpick this along with evidence of his controlling and manipulative behaviour. Rita was much loved by her family and friends and I hope that Cowen's conviction gives them an element of closure. "We understand how isolated victims of domestic abuse can feel. Monrovia Home Depot vigil planned for man who died allegedly fleeing immigration operation
A vigil is planned outside a Monrovia Home Depot store Friday night for a man who died as he was allegedly fleeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers Thursday morning. The National Day Laborer Organizing Network is hosting the 6 p.m. event in memory of the man who died, who has not yet been identified. "The worker was fleeing an unannounced raid by immigration agents, the latest in an ongoing wave of violent, chaotic kidnappings and assaults that ICE and other agencies are waging at Home Depots and other locations across Southern California," the group said in a statement. The Monrovia Police Department said the man ran away from the Home Depot at 1625 Mountain Avenue as ICE agents approached the hardware store. The man crossed Evergreen Avenue and ran onto the 210 Freeway less than 10 minutes after the agents arrived, according to the City of Monrovia. He was struck by an SUV on the freeway and later died at the hospital. According to the Department of Homeland Security, agents were not pursuing the man. Immigration rights advocates said 10 people were detained during Thursday's operation. Homeland Security was unaware of the man's death until CHP contacted the agency hours after its operation ended. Protesters responded to the man's death and staged a rally at the Monrovia Home Depot on Thursday. The Home Depot is in the district represented by Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez. "There is such incredible fear in our immigrant communities, so much so that people will run into freeway traffic out of fear when all they want is a chance to support their family and seek the American Dream," the senator said in a statement. She called for an end to what she described as violent and sweeping.
