Kerala lets children be colourful butterflies on school celebration days

Thrissur (Kerala), Aug 12 (PTI) Children in Kerala will no longer have to wear uniforms on school celebration days.
State General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced the decision at the formation meeting of the State School Arts Festival reception committee here on Tuesday.
He said the idea came directly from the children themselves.
'Let the little ones enjoy themselves like colourful butterflies," the minister said in a Facebook post.
While some people praised the move, others felt it might backfire.
'A big thank you to Sivankutty sir… Let the children enjoy this special time in their lives," one person wrote in the comments section.
Another shared a different view.
They recalled that in their school days, uniforms were worn only three days a week.
Later, it was made five days to ensure fairness between children from rich and poor families.
The idea was to avoid making less privileged children feel sad when others came in expensive clothes, they said.
They added that uniforms also made it easier to spot students if they were seen wandering outside school.
In their view, uniforms are still important today — especially during sports and arts events — as a way to keep children safe. PTI TGB TGB ROH

Earlier, Deputy White House Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted footage showing off new speakers installed as part of Trump's makeover of the White House's Rose Garden. One of Trump's favourite songs, Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless the USA," blares in the video, over a shot showing patio-style tables shielded by yellow umbrellas. The shot later focuses in on an American flag overhead. Leavitt subsequently brought reporters to the Rose Garden and said Trump was controlling the playlist as crews tested the speakers for 'what will be the best event in the history of the White House." She said the next party there will be 'hopefully soon." Other songs being played included 'Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum. The music was loud enough to be heard in other parts of the White House. 'We'll thoroughly discuss what our nation can and should do, including from the perspectives of laws and capabilities, and play an appropriate role," Ishiba said, signaling Japan's intent to contribute to international efforts aimed at securing Ukraine's sovereignty. On Tuesday, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis released a statement confirming the country's willingness to serve as the summit's venue, while also guaranteeing 'immunity" to Russian President Vladimir Putin from the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant, reported Reuters. The proposed peace summit would bring together Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and US President Donald Trump. Although the date and location have not yet been finalised, multiple venues across Europe are being considered. According to reports, the US Secret Service is currently assessing security arrangements in Budapest, Hungary, making it one of the top contenders. However, Switzerland has now formally offered to host the meeting in Geneva. 'We have always signalled our willingness, but it naturally depends on the will of the major powers," said Cassis. The Swiss government has also addressed the legal implications surrounding President Putin's visit. The ICC issued arrest warrants against him in March 2023 over alleged war crimes committed during the ongoing conflict. Geneva has proposed to grant Putin immunity if he enters Swiss territory for the purpose of attending peace talks. Budapest remains another potential venue. Hungary, having withdrawn from the ICC earlier this year, also offers a safe legal environment for Putin to attend the summit without fear of arrest.
