Thrissur (Kerala), Aug 12 (PTI) Children in Kerala will no longer have to wear uniforms on school celebration days.
State General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced the decision at the formation meeting of the State School Arts Festival reception committee here on Tuesday.
He said the idea came directly from the children themselves.
'Let the little ones enjoy themselves like colourful butterflies," the minister said in a Facebook post.
While some people praised the move, others felt it might backfire.
'A big thank you to Sivankutty sir… Let the children enjoy this special time in their lives," one person wrote in the comments section.
Another shared a different view.
They recalled that in their school days, uniforms were worn only three days a week.
Later, it was made five days to ensure fairness between children from rich and poor families.
The idea was to avoid making less privileged children feel sad when others came in expensive clothes, they said.
They added that uniforms also made it easier to spot students if they were seen wandering outside school.
In their view, uniforms are still important today — especially during sports and arts events — as a way to keep children safe. PTI TGB TGB ROH

Trump cancels August vacation to work on Russia-Ukraine

Agency: Last Updated: Washington, Aug 19 (AP) The White House on Tuesday said President Donald Trump called off his traditional summer vacation in northern New Jersey due to the ongoing talks to end the war in Ukraine. Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, confirmed the president's decision. 'This is normally the time when the president goes on vacation, but not this president," Leavitt said, adding that there were 'discussions about him working from Bedminster for a couple of weeks but he decided against it." Bedminster is the location of his club in northern New Jersey, where Trump often goes for weekends. He also spent some stretches of time in August there for vacation during his first term. The comments from Leavitt came when the White House took a portion of the day's press pool out to the renovated Rose Garden as the president tested out the area's new speakers. Earlier, Deputy White House Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted footage showing off new speakers installed as part of Trump's makeover of the White House's Rose Garden. One of Trump's favourite songs, Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless the USA," blares in the video, over a shot showing patio-style tables shielded by yellow umbrellas. The shot later focuses in on an American flag overhead. Leavitt subsequently brought reporters to the Rose Garden and said Trump was controlling the playlist as crews tested the speakers for 'what will be the best event in the history of the White House." She said the next party there will be 'hopefully soon." Other songs being played included 'Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum. The music was loud enough to be heard in other parts of the White House. Japan To Participate In NATO-Led Security Guarantee Initiative For Ukraine

Last Updated: The Japanese Prime Minister also commended President Trump's diplomatic efforts, praising his talks with both Zelenskyy and European leaders. Japan has voiced strong support for Ukraine, with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announcing on Tuesday that the country will participate in providing security guarantees to help prevent future Russian aggression. The comments were reported by Jiji Press following Ishiba's briefing with reporters at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo. 'We'll thoroughly discuss what our nation can and should do, including from the perspectives of laws and capabilities, and play an appropriate role," Ishiba said, signaling Japan's intent to contribute to international efforts aimed at securing Ukraine's sovereignty. The announcement came just one day after US President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders at the White House. The high-level meeting focused on advancing negotiations around the Russia-Ukraine conflict, exploring a potential trilateral summit between Putin, Zelenskyy, and Trump, and outlining frameworks for future security guarantees to Ukraine. President Trump stated during the talks that Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown signs of being open to the idea of granting security guarantees to Ukraine. However, Trump emphasised that the primary responsibility for upholding such guarantees would rest largely with European nations. Fox News that a coalition of 30 countries, including Japan and Australia, has been working in recent months to develop a plan for providing these guarantees. 'Over the last couple of months… a group of now 30 countries, including Japan and Australia, are working on this concept of security guarantees," Rutte said. Japan officially joined the coalition in March. While Ishiba confirmed Japan's participation, he did not outline specific details, stating, 'We're not in the phase where we can provide details." The Japanese Prime Minister also commended President Trump's diplomatic efforts, praising his talks with both Zelenskyy and European leaders. He reiterated Japan's position in support of a ceasefire and a 'just and lasting peace" for Ukraine. In parallel to its international diplomatic stance, Japan is also engaged in direct talks with Ukraine to expand bilateral cooperation. In June 2024, Japan became the first non-NATO nation to sign a security agreement with Ukraine. The 10-year pact includes commitments to continued humanitarian and non-lethal aid, as well as long-term support for Ukraine's post-war reconstruction efforts. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Switzerland Offers 'Immunity' To Putin If Chosen To Host Russia-Ukraine Peace Summit

Last Updated: The proposed peace summit would bring together Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and US President Donald Trump. Switzerland has officially expressed its interest in hosting the proposed trilateral meeting as part of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine peace talks. On Tuesday, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis released a statement confirming the country's willingness to serve as the summit's venue, while also guaranteeing 'immunity" to Russian President Vladimir Putin from the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant, reported Reuters. The proposed peace summit would bring together Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and US President Donald Trump. Although the date and location have not yet been finalised, multiple venues across Europe are being considered. According to reports, the US Secret Service is currently assessing security arrangements in Budapest, Hungary, making it one of the top contenders. However, Switzerland has now formally offered to host the meeting in Geneva. 'We have always signalled our willingness, but it naturally depends on the will of the major powers," said Cassis. The Swiss government has also addressed the legal implications surrounding President Putin's visit. The ICC issued arrest warrants against him in March 2023 over alleged war crimes committed during the ongoing conflict. Geneva has proposed to grant Putin immunity if he enters Swiss territory for the purpose of attending peace talks. Budapest remains another potential venue. Hungary, having withdrawn from the ICC earlier this year, also offers a safe legal environment for Putin to attend the summit without fear of arrest. It is still unclear which location will ultimately be selected for the high-stakes meeting. French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly endorsed Geneva as the venue, citing Switzerland's long-standing reputation as a neutral host for diplomatic negotiations. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also supported the idea, stating that Geneva 'could be the right venue." As locations continue to be discussed, the Kremlin has not yet formally confirmed Putin's willingness to meet with Zelenskyy. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Tuesday, 'Any contacts involving top officials must be prepared with the utmost care." However, according to several European Union representatives who were present at Monday's meeting at the White House, President Putin has agreed in principle to meet Zelenskyy within the next two weeks. While the exact date and venue remain undecided, the officials confirmed that Putin has accepted the proposal for a trilateral summit. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 01:55 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
