Need seen for effective utilisation of funds earmarked for forest development
Speaking after launching the Vanamahotsava and Environmental Awareness Programme by planting a sapling at the Rajiv Nagar Park in the city, Mr. Gaviappa noted that the region between Hosapete and Chitradurga has some of the most expansive forest cover in Kalyana Karnataka.
'The department should scientifically explore using Tungabhadra river waters for forest zones. If pipeline systems are set up to divert river waters to lakes, it will improve groundwater levels and help trees remain green even during summer,' he said.
He pointed out that such a move will also benefit farmers. 'Public visits to local wildlife spots like Daroji Bear Sanctuary and Atalji Zoological Park in Kamalapura should be encouraged. These areas are rich in biodiversity, including rare bird species such as the Great Indian Bustard. We need to preserve and promote such natural wealth,' he added.
Campaign slogan
Addressing a gathering, Assistant Conservator of Forests H. Anupama said that this year's campaign slogan encourages everyone to plant a sapling in the name of their mother, symbolising nurturing and care.
'Forests attract rainfall and play a key role in reducing pollution. We must instill awareness among children not just about education but also about environmental conservation,' she said.
She called for priority to be given to greening efforts by planting more trees and protecting biodiversity. 'Every living being has a right to live on this planet. To report forest-related issues or animal poaching, citizens can call the forest helpline 1926,' she added.
Planting drives
Speaking on the occasion, Hosapete City Municipal Council Vice-President Ramesh Gupta said that Vanamahotsava should not be limited to a single day. 'We plan to extend tree planting drives to all 35 wards in the city and organise environment awareness activities across the municipality,' he said.
Blossoms Kindergarten and High School headmaster Vivek, Rajiv Nagar Welfare Association president Katagi Gopal, Assistant Conservator of Forests Kirubanandan, other Forest Department staff, teachers, students and residents were present.

Farmer on night vigil killed in attack by 16-member herd of wild elephants in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district
A farmer, Ramakrishna Raju (55), was killed on the spot when a 16-member herd of wild elephants attacked him in a field at Kothuru village of Somala mandal in Chittoor district late on Saturday night. The incident triggered panic in several villages in the vicinity, as the herd was reportedly camping at a water body nearby. As per information, the herd emerged from the nearby thickets, strayed into the field, and attacked the unsuspecting victim who was on night vigil. The sudden charge left the farmer helpless. The villagers informed the forest officials that the herd had been resorting to crop raids after dusk for the last three days. Pawan condoles death Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan condoled the farmer's death and expressed solidarity with the family members. He announced that ex gratia would be given, and directed that the forest officials initiate corrective measures to prevent wild elephants from venturing into human habitations. Meanwhile, the incident led to angry protests on Sunday, with the villagers staging a blockade on the Tirupati-Punganur Road along with the body of the farmer, blaming the Forest Department for its 'gross negligence.' Raising slogans such as 'where are the Kumki elephants,' the villagers urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Mr. Pawan Kalyan to immediately intervene and do justice to the bereaved family. They demanded that a scientific action plan be worked out to put an end to the vexed man-animal conflict in the western mandals of the district. The villagers alleged that despite their repeated alerts about the movement of the wild elephants, there was no tangible action from the Forest Department. Senior forest officials rushed to Kothuru and pacified the agitators by assuring them compensation and corrective measures. The farmer's body was later shifted to the area hospital for autopsy.

Mahadayi back to the forefront after Goa CM's statement; farmers want action and not politics
The long-pending Mahadayi project is again in the news following the Goa Chief Minister's statement in the Legislative Assembly about Union Minister for Forest and Environment Bhupendra Yadav's 'assurance' that the project will not be approved. While the Karnataka government has already taken exception to this, farmers' organisations fighting for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala Project (which is part of the Mahadayi project) are now up in arms against political parties, particularly the BJP, as the recent statement comes from its dispensation. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil have condemned the statement of Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and said that such development was not only an 'injustice to the federal system' but also indicated the stepmotherly treatment meted out to Karnataka by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. BJP on the back foot The development has put the BJP leaders from the State on the back foot, particularly Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi and others, including Arvind Bellad, who hitherto used to refer to the then AICC president Sonia Gandhi's statement against the project during an election campaign. Mr. Joshi has issued a statement saying that the Goa Chief Minister had made a 'personal statement' and it had nothing to do with the Union government. Emphasising that it was not time for politicising the issue, Mr. Joshi has said that after his earlier meeting with Mr. Yadav on the Mahadayi issue, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had said that Mr. Yadav would not do politics over the issue and that he was pro-development. Other BJP leaders in the region, including Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Mr. Bellad, and former Minister Shankar Patil Munenakoppa too have taken a similar line. However, farmers' organisations, which have been fighting for the implementation of the long-pending project, have not taken the statement lightly and have condemned it in strong terms. At the same time, they have urged politicians on both sides of the divide not to use the issue for their politics. 'Exert pressure together' President of the Karnataka Raita Sene Shankrappa Ambali has said that instead of again indulging in the blame game, all the Members of Parliament from Karnataka should exert pressure on the Union government to get the required clearances as the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal had already given its verdict, and the DPR had also been approved. 'What is now required is getting required clearances and the MPs should make concerted efforts in this regard,' he said. Veeresh Sobaradmath Swami, who has been leading an indefinite agitation for the project at Naragund in Gadag district, not only termed Mr. Sawanth's statement as 'highly condemnable', but also Mr. Joshi's reaction to it as 'highly irresponsible'. He said he would would be convening a farmers' meeting at Naragund on July 31 to chalk out the course of action. While the demand for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala project is over four decades old, an indefinite agitation was launched at Naragund on July 16, 2015, and amid various ups and downs, the stir has been continued by farmers who are insistent on getting the project implemented. Now their demand is that the Centre should give all clearances for the project to be executed to utilise the water allocated by the tribunal.

Nitish Kumar Hikes Journalists' Pension To Rs 15,000 Ahead Of Bihar Polls
In a major development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday announced a significant hike in monthly pension benefits under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme' for all eligible journalists and their spouses. In a social media post on X, the Chief Minister informed that the state government has instructed the concerned department to increase the monthly pension amount for all eligible journalists from the existing Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000. "I am pleased to inform that under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme', instructions have been given to the department to provide a monthly pension of Rs 15,000 instead of Rs 6,000 to all eligible journalists. Additionally, in the event of the death of journalists receiving a pension under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme', instructions have been given to provide their dependent spouse with a monthly pension of Rs 10,000 instead of Rs 3,000 for their lifetime," Chief Minister Kumar posted on X. The Chief Minister also emphasised the importance of journalists in a democratic society, referring to them as the fourth pillar of democracy and highlighting their vital contribution to social development. He said, "Journalists play a crucial role in democracy. They are the fourth pillar of democracy and have a significant role in social development. We have been taking care of journalists' facilities from the beginning so that they can perform their journalism impartially and live with dignity after retirement." Notably, this announcement comes months ahead of the Legislative Assembly elections in Bihar, which are expected to be held in October or November this year. However, the Election Commission is yet to announce the dates. Meanwhile, the political battle between the ruling NDA and opposition Mahagathbandhan has intensified in the state and at the Centre, months ahead of the elections, on the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls. The SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar has erupted in a massive row in the country, with the opposition INDIA bloc alleging that it will delete a significant chunk of voters. Earlier on Friday, the Election Commission of Bihar announced that 99.8 per cent of the state's electors have been covered under the ongoing Special Integrated Revision (SIR) process, as per the statement from the polling agency. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar confirmed that forms of over 7.23 crore electors have been received and digitised, with their names set to be included in the Draft Electoral Roll, scheduled for release on August 1, 2025, added the statement.
