How Much Luggage Can You Carry?
Indian Railways has set luggage weight limits based on the class of travel:
General Class - Up to 35 kg (free)
Sleeper Class - Up to 40 kg (free)
Third AC - Up to 40 kg (free)
Second AC - Up to 50 kg (free)
First AC - Up to 70 kg (free)
If a passenger carries more than the permitted limit, they are required to book the excess luggage in advance at the parcel office.
What Happens If You Carry Extra Luggage?
If a passenger is found with unbooked excess luggage, the TTE or luggage inspector can impose a fine. This fine depends on how much extra weight is being carried and the distance of travel.
To avoid penalties and inconvenience, passengers are advised to book extra luggage ahead of time and travel within the allowed limits.

In July, several changes have been introduced in the ticketing system, including revised Tatkal booking timings for agents and making Aadhaar verification mandatory for Tatkal ticket reservation. During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh asked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw whether the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) levies additional charges on digital payments at the rate of Rs 10 for non-AC tickets and Rs 20 for AC tickets, when booked via UPI or other modes. He also questioned the rationale for levying such charges despite the government's push for promotion of cashless economy and usage of UPI. Responding to this, Vaishnaw said that has provided the facility to book reserved tickets online saving passengers from the trouble of going to reservation counters to book the tickets thus saving travel time and transportation costs. In a written statement on July 8, the Railway Minister added, 'IRCTC incurs substantial expenditure on providing online ticketing facility and in order to defray the cost incurred in maintenance, upgradation and expansion of ticketing infrastructure, a very nominal convenience fee is levied by IRCTC.' He also stated that the online ticket booking facility provided by IRCTC is one of the most passenger friendly initiatives of Indian Railways. 'At present about 87% of the reserved tickets are booked online,' the minister noted. Earlier this year, the IRCTC deactivated over 2.5 crore user IDs to curb malpractices in ticket booking system. 'With a view to curb malpractices in ticket booking system, IRCTC has recently deactivated over 2.5 crore user ids, as their credentials were found to be suspicious during extensive data point analysis,' Vaishnaw said. Starting August 10, 2025, Indian Railways will launch three new Vande Bharat trains. If you're planning to travel on these routes you check the train timings, dates, and ticket prices in advance. To make rail travel in India faster and comfortable, the new Vande Bharat trains will be flagged off virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 10. These trains will operate on three different routes: Amritsar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Bengaluru to Belagavi Pune to Ajni (Nagpur) With this launch, the total number of Vande Bharat trains in the country will rise from 147 to 150. 1. Amritsar – Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Route This train will operate six days a week (except Tuesdays). Train No. 26406 will depart from Katra at 6:40 AM and reach Amritsar at 12:20 PM. Stops: Jammu, Pathankot Cantt, Jalandhar City, and Beas. On the return journey, Train No. 26405 will leave Amritsar at 4:25 PM and reach Katra by 10:00 PM. This train will benefit pilgrims traveling to Vaishno Devi with its faster and comfortable journey. 2. Bengaluru – Belagavi Route This train will also run six days a week. It will depart Belagavi at 5:20 AM and arrive in Bengaluru by 1:50 PM. The return leg will start from Bengaluru at 2:20 PM and reach Belagavi at 10:40 PM. While the final timetable is yet to be confirmed, this route is expected to benefit business travelers and IT professionals due to its connectivity between the two cities. Ticket prices have not been officially announced yet. 3. Pune – Ajni (Nagpur) Route This train will run three days a week. Covering over 850 kilometers, it will complete the journey in under 12 hours. The train will start from Ajni railway station and terminate at Hadapsar station in Pune. This will improve travel time and convenience between Pune and Nagpur.
