Cigarettes and KFC on the catwalk: How London Fashion Week is cashing in on hangover chic

Independent24-02-2025

Nothing is less fashionable than a walk of shame. Chances are, your hair is in disarray and smells like an ashtray. On top of that, you've not slept a wink. Think hooded, tired eyes with an overall visage that's at best pallid and at worst severely sunken. Then there's your outfit: laddered tights, someone else's jacket, and a slinky top that's completely at odds with 7am commuter attire.
Suffice to say, it's not the most obvious aesthetic to serve as inspiration for designers at London Fashion Week. And yet, it was exactly that for Sinead Gorey, whose A/W2025 collection was an homage to the morning after the night before; it was literally titled: 'Walk of Shame'. According to the show notes, it proposed 'a way of dressing that only surfaces during the wee hours' defined by 'accidental elegance' and looks that are more thrown together than carefully assembled.
This was clear from the offset, as guests sat down to find bespoke KFC bags on their seats, each filled with a £10 'chicken cheque'. Taking place in the depths of a car park beneath Oxford Circus with a thrumming soundtrack spearheaded by electronic duo, Bicep, the mood was instantly one of underground – and after-hours – subversion.
Models didn't so much as walk down the runway as they did swagger, stopping at various points to make eyes with those on the front row and wearing an array of what Gorey calls 'siren staples' like studded leather one-pieces, tartan co-ords, and scarlet chainmail gowns.
Tights were worn over knickers and while knee-high stockings were paired with retro Converse stilettos and bug-eyed sunglasses hid hungover eyes. Playfulness was amplified by way of the red lipstick kiss marks several models had dotted across their chests.
As for hemlines, well, they were ludicrously high, sometimes wedged halfway up bottoms, meaning skin was very much on show. At one point, the chaos was such that a model took a tumble and it was unclear whether or not this was intentional. The morning-after mood felt most potent, though, when some models strutted down the runway while puffing on what smelled like real cigarettes; others did so while taking bites out of KFC burgers.
'The decision to work with KFC came from the idea of the journey home from a night out, KFC cup in hand just having finished a burger,' Gorey tells The Independent. 'I think it's something everyone can relate to in one way or another, and I just wanted to have fun with it.' As for the smoking, the southeast Londoner says it was less of a statement than it was a character portrayal. 'I think things are taken too seriously in this industry,' she adds. 'I wanted to add some drama to the runway.'
It was a joyful paean to teenage hedonism, evoking a reckless spirit that served as a refreshing antidote to some of the other more quotidian runways elsewhere in the capital. That said, Gorey's themes percolated elsewhere. The faux fur coats that models wore slung down their arms made appearances the following morning at Toga; some were belted while others came with matching hats.
Meanwhile, a chaotic mood was conveyed through back-to-front jackets, which were worn by several of the models. Rather than seeming stuffy and prim, as faux fur coats and tailoring sometimes can, here these pieces were worn more subversively: think less Jackie Kennedy and more Carrie Bradshaw.
'I wanted to express provocation,' explained Toga's designer, Yasuko Furuta, in the show notes, which went on to explain that this collection 'takes formalwear and represents it as informal. As anti-form.' Overall, it offered a unique twist on sophisticated style.
Speaking of classic elegance, this too was turned on its head at Emilia Wickstead, whose usual tone of demurity was traded for a twitchier, more haunting collection inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic, The Birds, with character-driven design led by the film's costume designer, Edith Head.
Models walked the runway in an array of tailored pistachio two-pieces with lingerie-inspired necklines providing a more feminine edge. But with arms crossed, jumpers slung over their shoulders, and black leather gloves held tightly in their hands, the models' demeanours lent themselves to the same teenage angst we saw at Gorey's show. The mood was fraught and deliciously deviant.
Simone Rocha also served up a nostalgic collection inspired by her school days complete with chunky knitted cardigans, duffle coats fitted with fur linings and striped rugby shirts. Faux fur found its way onto glamorous floor-length jackets but also onto hot pants as well as belts and bralettes.
Then there were the teddy bear-shaped handbags and scarves, as well as tiny pearl tortoises. The show notes, which referred to The Tortoise and the Hare fable, stated simply: 'School days haze. Twisted twin sets. Behind the bike shed.'
It's that last line that seems to capture the overall mood from the aforementioned shows, one that is fundamentally about a youthful spirit defined by debauchery, escapism, and the pursuit of hidden pleasures. Bring it on.

Love Island star recalls how she delivered baby sister at home with shoelace

EXCLUSIVE: Love Island 2025 star Alima Gagigo has opened up about the extraordinary moment she delivered her baby sister at home - and she's determined to make a difference in the villa Love Island stunner Alima Gagigo is already making headlines - and not just for her villa debut. In a story that's as jaw-dropping as it is heartwarming, the 23-year-old Londoner has revealed she once delivered her baby sister at home using a shoelace to tie the umbilical cord. The incident happened in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, ahead of the brand new series kicking off on Monday June 9, Alima shared the extraordinary moment that proved she's not just reality TV-ready - she's resilient under pressure, too. ‌ 'Yeah! It was back in January 2020. My sister's a COVID baby,' she said. 'It was just me and my mum at home, and the labour was 15 minutes. I had to tie the umbilical cord with a shoelace while on the phone with paramedics. It was scary but amazing looking back.' ‌ Alima is a wealth management client services executive living in Glasgow. Now, the educated beauty is swapping emergency home births for bikinis and bombshell drama in the sun-soaked Love Island villa, and she's determined to make a difference while doing it. Representation, she says, is front and centre. '100%. When I watched the show last year, seeing girls like Whitney made a difference,' Alima told us. 'If I can be that person this year, it could give confidence to others who might want to go on the show in the future. Representation really matters.' Alima, who describes her hair plans as 'glueless wigs - closures instead of frontals,' is stepping into the ITV2 spotlight following in the footsteps of fan favourite love island star Whitney Adebayo, who starred on the 10th series joining as a bombshell. And it turns out Whitney's already showing love for her fellow Islander. 'I actually didn't know that - this is the first time I'm hearing it!' she said when told of Whitney's online support. 'I follow her and absolutely loved her journey. As another dark-skinned woman, I could really relate. Maybe she supports me because she knows what I might be going through.' The support from her circle has also been overwhelming, with her family cheering her on from the sidelines. ‌ 'Everyone's buzzing! Friends and family are super excited. My mum was especially excited - taking pictures and everything when she dropped me at the airport!' And while Love Island's latest season is already making headlines - ITV bosses recently confirmed they won't shy away from showing sex on screen if it happens - Alima admits she is 'going to stay true to myself.' 'On the outside, I don't really do that kind of thing, so I don't think I'll be getting up to much in the villa either.' ‌ That down-to-earth energy is exactly what fans are already loving. Alima, who says she's 'not really anxious' about how she'll be perceived as a Black woman on the show, is focused on being authentic. 'Seeing girls like Whitney and Mimii [Ngulube] last year who were themselves and came across amazing gave me confidence,' she added. 'I want to be fully myself, regardless of stereotypes.' She's not afraid to laugh either - especially when it comes to her biggest dating ick. ‌ 'Honestly, if someone rapped or sang to me and it was bad - I wouldn't know what to say. If it's good, then fair enough, but if As the 2025 series kicks off with a fresh group of hopefuls and more drama promised than ever before, Alima is clearly more than ready to hit the villa. Sam Thompson's love life after Zara split and his response to girlfriend rumours

Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott split after five years together, with Zara now dating One Direction's Louis Tomlinson - who will be playing in Soccer Aid alongside Sam Sam Thompson has been participating in a strenuous challenge ahead of this year's Soccer Aid for UNICEF. The Made in Chelsea star and I'm A Celebrity winner has been competing in Match Ball Mission throughout this week, with his progress being broadcast on ITV's This Morning. He's been transporting the Soccer Aid match ball over 260 miles from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford in preparation for this year's game. Every mile, whether on foot or by bike, Sam is aiming to raise as much money as possible to support UNICEF's work for children worldwide - and he's set to cross the finish line on Friday, June 6, which will also be televised on This Morning. ‌ Before he completes his colossal task, we delve into the 32-year-old's love life following his recent break up with Zara McDermott. Reality star turned documentary maker Zara is now dating One Direction's Louis Tomlinson - who coincidentally will be participating in the Soccer Aid match alongside Sam on Sunday, June 15 at Old Trafford. ‌ Sam and Zara's romance Sam and Zara started dating in early 2019, shortly after she had finished her stint on Love Island where she was involved with self-proclaimed ladies' man, Adam Collard, reports Wales Online. At that time, Londoner Sam was in a relationship with fellow Made In Chelsea cast member Sophie Habboo (now married to fellow MIC and Strictly star Jamie Laing and expecting her first child) but it wasn't long before Zara and Sam became official and Zara soon joined the cast of the E4 reality show. In a dramatic twist to their love story, Zara and Sam weathered a storm back in late 2019 amid allegations that Zara had strayed with music mogul Brahim Fouradi during her stint on X Factor: Celebrity, as reported by Hello! magazine. Initially dismissing the rumours, Zara ultimately poured out her heart on social media with an emotional confession in October 2020. That same month, viewers of Made in Chelsea watched as Zara implored Sam for forgiveness - footage that has since morphed into meme-worthy material. Happily, the couple later laughed off the incident. Choosing to put the past behind them, Sam reconciled with Zara, and the pair settled down together in their Chelsea pad, right next to Sam's sister Louise, sharing TikToks enjoyed by their fans. ‌ Why did Sam and Zara split? Five years on, whispers of a breakup began swirling at the start of 2025 after the duo spent Christmas Day and New Year's Eve separately. While Sam dedicated his Christmas to volunteering for a charitable cause, Zara joined her kin in Upminster, East London. Sam was seen revelling with mates at Kensington Roof Gardens to ring in the New Year, leaving Zara to embrace a quieter celebration. The crux of their separation seemed rooted in their hectic, clashing timetables. ‌ The last sighting of this reality TV pair together was in December 2024, celebrating Zara's birthday. It was then that Sam took to Instagram with loving words for his girlfriend, dubbing her his "soulmate". Who is Sam dating now? Sam, who recently opened up about his autism diagnosis, has reportedly been in a relationship with Love Island's Samie Elishi since April. However, when questioned about her support during his Soccer Aid challenge, he told MailOnline: 'I feel like... this is so much more than who I'm dating or hooking up with. And I feel like it would take away from what it is going on. You know what I mean? ‌ 'You know, If I had a wife or something like, like a girlfriend of years it might be a different. I just think that I don't want to do anything that will take away from this challenge and UNICEF - the spotlight needs to be on them. 'Like, I'm literally a vehicle. That's how I'm seeing it. I'm just a thing that is running to try and make money, so I want to keep it that way. ". Zara has been dating One Direction's Louis Tomlinson following her break up with Sam, and Louis is set to return to the Soccer Aid line-up. This Morning is on ITV1 weekdays at 10am and ITVX. Soccer Aid is on ITVX on Sunday, June 15

Mango's New Collab Is With The Designer Loved By Rihanna And Kylie Jenner

Collaborations used to be few and far between but, these days, it feels as though one can't escape fashion partnerships. Aside from designers teaming up with high street brands, our favourite It girls of all time have even been lured to these affordable labels; Sienna Miller went to M&S, for example, Kate Moss to Zara. The latest collab to excite our interest, however, isn't from an It girl but rather the London-based designer who dresses them. Supriya Lele's debut at London Fashion Week was in 2019 and, since then, she has dressed the likes of Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Chung, Jean Campbell, Bella Hadid and Vittoria Ceretti. Now, she has created a capsule collection for Mango. Kylie Jenner wearing Supriya Lele Launching today, the collection is titled 'A Summer Reverie' and is, as a result, packed with the sorts of pieces you'll want to pack into your suitcase and wear throughout your holiday. Sheer maxi dresses, form-fitting minis, satin skirts and cut-out swimsuits are among the most glamorous pieces, all of which share the same sensuality as the collections from Lele's eponymous label. There's even a black knitted dress with feathered hem which bears a striking resemblance to a lilac style worn by Ceretti (supermodel and current girlfriend of Leonardo DiCaprio). Vittoria Ceretti in Supriya Lele This particular launch marks the debut of Mango Collective, a platform 'dedicated to celebrating the creativity and innovation of niche designers, bringing fresh perspectives to the fashion world,' according to Mango. Presumably, this will see more independent designers like Lele given a global platform, which can only be a win-win for the smaller brands at the heart of the fashion industry. Unfortunately, as with Mango's collaboration with Victoria Beckham last year (in which there was a dress Sienna Miller can't stop wearing), this collection only caters to UK sizes 6-12 which, considering the average national size is 16, excludes the majority of women. It's frustrating that a brand with so many resources at its disposal is unwilling to make the effort to create inclusive clothes that will make all women feel great; fashion's ability to make so many feel excluded is something I had hoped was changing. I did put this to Mango and received the following response from the brand: 'Mango has worked on inclusive sizing for a very long time, and includes sizes in a selection of clothing from its main collections that ranges from XXS to 4XL. For special limited edition collections such as Supriya Lele x Mango, the collection is very limited both in units and also in sale time, so Mango has also limited the sizing to its most commercial sizes to ensure the best outcome.' Nevertheless, Jada Langola-Walters, Grazia's social media assistant, tried on the collection to see what she thought of Supriya Lele's take on Mango. 'I love the sheer black maxi dress, although unless you are wearing it to a pool party on Ibiza, it's a pretty daring choice. Jada in the sheer black maxi dress 'Overall, I really like the collection, although one of my favourite pieces has to be the pink shirt, as it's probably the most versatile. It is long at the front so can be worn loose or tied with high waisted trousers or skirts – I feel like I could wear this over tank tops to work but then with a lace bralette for evenings out. The accessories are great, too – I am obsessed with the oversized bag, not to mention the jelly shoes.' Jada in Supriya Lele x Mango 1. Halterneck Sheer Maxi Dress 2. Pink Sheer Shirt 3. She has previously written for the likes of Harper's Bazaar, The Financial Times, Glamour, Stylist, The Telegraph, Red, i-D and The Pool on everything from fashion to curly hair (hi!) to the patriarchy. Not necessarily in that order. Find her on Instagram and Twitter . But please don't look for her MySpace profile, which until now was the last time she wrote about herself in the third person.
