Wrexham teens died in crash after new driver sped into tree
Three teenagers died in a crash after the driver lost control of the car while travelling at speed over a humpback bridge and hit a tree, an inquest has heard.Dafydd Hûw Craven-Jones, 18, from Wrexham was driving the Ford Ka on Cannock Road in Penkridge, Staffordshire, just before midnight on 25 May last year when the crash happened.He and Morgan Jones, 17 - also from Wrexham - were pronounced dead at the scene, while Sophie Bates, 17, from Stafford, died three days later in hospital.The other rear seat passenger, Brooke Varley, was seriously injured but survived.
The inquest held in Stafford on Wednesday was told neither of the girls sitting were wearing seatbelts and Mr Jones was not wearing his correctly, but Mr Craven-Jones was wearing his seatbelt.On the night of the crash, Mr Craven-Jones, who had held his driving licence for five months, had driven to Penkridge in Staffordshire from Wrexham to pick up Mr Jones, who was at a house party there.Friends Sophie Bates and Brooke Varley also got into the car and the four went for a drive to Cannock, before heading back on the same road in the direction of Penkridge.Sgt Richard Moores from Staffordshire Police told the hearing Ms Varley had said Mr Craven-Jones was driving "a bit fast" on the way back from Cannock and she had asked him to slow down, while telling Ms Bates she "didn't like the way the car was driving".Ms Varley told police at the time that she had a "rollercoaster feeling" and was holding on to the headrest of the passenger seat in front of her when she felt the car swerve and then blacked out.She woke to hear someone on the phone to the emergency services.
It is not known how fast the car was travelling at the time of the accident. A tracker app on Ms Varley's phone showed a top speed of 85mph during the journey - but Sgt Moores said this was not reliable.A Snapchat video recovered from Ms Bates' phone showed a video Mr Craven-Jones had made when driving earlier in the evening, in which he said he was worried he would get a ticket for driving 90mph in a 70mph zone.The inquest was also told warning signs for the bridge had been under consideration for improvement by Staffordshire County Highways.
Giving her conclusions of death by road traffic collision, Kelly Dixon, assistant coroner for south Staffordshire, said on the balance of probabilities " inappropriate speed" had led to the collision.Mr Craven-Jones was a new driver, having passed his test five months previously, in November 2023, she said.The fact that no seat belts were worn in the back of the car and at least one of the girls collided with Mr Craven-Jones was likely to have contributed to his injuries, she added.Ms Dixon said she would be making a prevention of future deaths report to Staffordshire County Highways regarding the hazard road markings and signage for the bridge where the accident took place, which had been "under consideration for improvement" since January 2024, but which still had not happened.There have been three crashes on the road since 2017, two with fatalities.

CCTV caught man firing sawn off shotgun at a house in Stockport with family just metres away
Two men have been jailed for a total of 34 years after a spate of violence across South Manchester in 2023, that included the use of a sawn off shotgun and throwing explosives at a house. One of the victims of the shootings has said she is scared to go out in public and is still shaken about what happened. Kieran Morgan, 30 of Dean Street, Failsworth, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life and received a sentence of 18 years with an extra five years on licence. Zaki Shazad, 22 of Ranford Road, Levenshulme, was sentenced to 16 years after being found guilty of conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life. Extensive CCTV footage showed the two men were responsible for three shootings: 12 March 2023 at Dorac Avenue, Heald Green, Stockport. Morgan approached the address and fired shots from a shotgun before throwing a homemade firework and explosive, which was caught on the doorbell footage. Forensic testing later revealed this to be hydrochloric acid. 21 April 2023 at Wilmslow Road, Heald Green, Stockport CCTV caught Morgan being dropped off at the house, before he pulled up his hood and covered his face. A family were in the driveway of the house, including a six-year-old girl, when Morgan pulled out a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun. Managing to take cover in a vehicle, the victims described hearing an 'explosion' as the gun went off and Morgan ran away. 30 April 2023, DRIP Burger on Wilmslow Road Morgan was seen on CCTV outside DRIP as he approached the premises, he then entered the fast food restaurant and fired towards the back of the shop and towards the counter. Police say 'miraculously' no one was injured as two customers were in the shop and one member of staff was near the counter when the shots were fired. Although these shootings happened on different days, the police investigation quickly linked them due to the information coming in. Officers trawled through extensive CCTV and ring doorbell footage in and around where the shootings had happened. They managed to create a timeline that followed the men as they made their way to and from where they used the guns. Some of this CCTV footage was used in an appeal to identify one of the men, Kieran Morgan who had been seen wearing a dark-coloured Canada Goose jacket with a light, fur-lined hood. This is a detail that would later identify him, as he posted a picture of himself to social media, wearing the same jacket. He also removed his balaclava after one shooting, which was then picked up by CCTV from a nearby house clearly showing his face. Specialist officers also analysed cell site data, which positively placed the two defendants in the areas of the shootings, just moments before they occurred. On the morning of Wednesday 21 June 2023, warrants were executed at addresses linked to Kieran Morgan, who was subsequently arrested and charged. Snapchat messages analysed from his phone following arrests showed communication with Zaki Shazad discussing proposed 'jobs', including the attack on DRIP Burger. On Monday 7 August 2023, another warrant was executed at the homes of Shazad, who was also arrested and charged. Detective Inspector Lee Newburn from Greater Manchester Police said: 'Violence, particularly this kind of revenge violence, will not be tolerated on the streets of Manchester. Two dangerous individuals have now been locked up for their parts in a number of firearms discharges targeting properties where innocent people were present." 'It is miraculous that no-one was seriously injured during these firearms discharges, but they could very easily have been." The men were sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on 9 June 2025.

Welshpool drink driver caught with partner in BMW car
A driver who was found to be twice over the drink-drive limit with his partner in the car has been banned from driving. Police were called at 11.20pm on May 16 after receiving a report from a member of the public in Welshpool who believed that the driver of a BMW X1 was under the influence of alcohol. Officers stopped the vehicle driven by Sukhminder Singh in Church Street and he failed a roadside breathalyser test. The 31-year-old was arrested and found to be twice over the drink-drive limit almost two hours later following a further breathalyser test at the police station. Defence solicitor Owain Jones told Welshpool Magistrates' Court that Singh couldn't recall how much he had drunk that evening, but it was "clearly more" than the two beers he had told police. Mr Jones said: "I explained the risk to himself, other road users and his family. His response was of guilt, and he feels ashamed and deeply regrets his actions. "He has no previous convictions and has never been in trouble before. This has been a lesson to him." Welshpool Magistrates' Court was told that Singh and his partner sought asylum in the UK due to religious persecution in India. "He has no benefits, but he lives off the generosity of friends, family and Sikh community," Mr Jones explained. Singh, of Mason Street, West Bromwich, was given a 20-month driving disqualification and ordered to pay the court £253 within three months after pleading guilty to drink driving. Nicholas Powell, chair of the magistrates' bench, said: "We are very disappointed seeing you here under these circumstances. "Drink driving is very foolish which could have resulted in injuries to people, yourself and your family. It seems that you gave no great thought about them."

Habibur Masum, 26, allegedly launched a 'ferocious' knife attack on Kulsuma Akter, 27, while she pushed their baby's pram in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The mum had fled to a hostel in Bradford 'to escape' her husband's 'violence, jealousyand controlling behaviour', Bradford Crown Court heard. He then sent her a photo of the refuge where she was staying, adding: 'I know that you are living in this place. I knew from the first day you moved here. 'If I had any wish to kill you, I could have from the first day. You do not know what you have lost, but one day you will understand. Nobody will love you like I do.' On the day of her death on April 6 last year, however, Akter 'felt safe to leave the refuge' because she had heard from Masum's relatives that he was in Spain, jurors were told. The mum was out walking her seven-month-old son in a pram with a friend when Masum walked with her into a shop. Masum had tracked down his wife in Bradford in the days leading up to the attack and had tried to lure her out of the hostel by pretending to be from a GP's surgery, the prosecution also said in court. He then pulled out a knife from his jacket and began violently attacking Akter, the court heard. Prosecutor Steven Wood KC said: 'He grabs Kulsuma and pushes her into a wall, stabbing her to the body. You will see that Kulsuma then goes to the ground only for the defendant to launch a ferocious and deadly attack. 'When the defendant had finished stabbing her, as a final act of sheer gratuitous violence, he kicks Kulsuma before moving away, but not before ensuring that he disposed of the knife. 'The [prosecution] say this was cold-blooded, calculated, pre-meditated murder. 'Why would the defendant take a knife with him to meet his estranged wife unless he planned to use it?' Akter had escaped previous threats on her life from her partner, who had been married for 18 months in November 2023, the court heard. Mr Wood said: 'Generally, the relationship had been good, but there were already warning signs. Jurors were told a 'completely innocuous' message from a male colleague to Akter, Masum became violent by slapping her and pulling her hair. The court also heard 'a chilling prediction' made Masum, when he told his wife: 'I am going to murder you, and the police will be taking me'. The next day, he allegedly put a knife to her throat in their bedroom and threatened her over her relationship with the colleague. Masum was arrested that night after a female family member called the police. After denying using violence in a police interview, he was then charged with two offences of assault by beating and one offence of making a threat to kill. Masum denies murdering Ms Akter but has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and possession of a knife. He also denies two charges of assault, one count of making threats to kill and one charge of stalking. The trial continues.
