The Jeep® Gladiator claims a top spot in the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), placing first in the Midsize Pickup segment*, and leads the segment average in seven out of 10 measured categories, including driving experience, infotainment and interior. This is the second time in three years that Gladiator was top in its segment.
The Jeep Wrangler also performed well, finishing second in the Compact SUV category, while the Jeep brand overall improved by 13 points, reflecting the strong performance of its two iconic models and continued strides in addressing customer concerns.
Dodge made one of the largest gains among all automotive brands in the 2025 IQS, climbing 24 positions to rank seventh overall.
The Chrysler brand also earned positive recognition, reducing its problems per 100 vehicles by 13. The Chrysler Pacifica ranked second in the Minivan segment, reinforcing the brand's strength in owner-reported satisfaction.

Lyten, a Silicon Valley battery startup developing lithium-sulphur cells as a cleaner alternative to lithium-ion, is backed by Jeep-owner Stellantis and U.S. delivery services provider FedEx. The deal revives hopes for European battery independence after Northvolt - the continent's potential rival to major Chinese electric vehicle battery makers - filed for bankruptcy in March, making it one of Sweden's largest corporate failures and sparking a frantic push to find a buyer. "Our plans are ... in large part to pick up where the Northvolt team left off," Lyten CEO and co-founder Dan Cook told Reuters, declining to disclose the purchase price beyond saying it was at a "substantial discount" to the original asset value. Northvolt's bankruptcy trustee said that the deal defused the risk of "complete shutdown", while Sweden's deputy prime minister Ebba Busch said the deal positioned the country "as key to Europe's energy independence. Northvolt has received much criticism that it had overpromised while failing to deliver battery cells deemed good enough quality for clients, even with help from its biggest customer, truckmaker Scania. Gustaf Sundell, Scania's head of ventures and new business, told Reuters it was too early to say if the group would place orders for batteries with Lyten, but it was happy with the outcome. TARGET MARKETS Lyten hopes to quickly restart the flagship Skelleftea plant in northern Sweden and resume deliveries of lithium-ion battery cells in 2026. In July it acquired Northvolt's energy storage business in Poland, Europe's largest, and is targeting automotive, defence and energy storage markets. Cook said several of Northvolt's former management would be joining Lyten, though not founder and ex-CEO Peter Carlsson. "We are focused on developing to be the leaders in locally sourced, locally manufactured batteries for both the North American and European markets right now," he said. Lyten said in July it had secured more than $200 million in additional equity investment to support its acquisitions and expansion plans. Cook said Lyten would prove its worth to Northvolt's former customers by focusing first on providing high yields to a single customer. Northvolt's order book once totalled more than $50 billion from automakers such as BMW, Volkswagen and Audi. "We actually think they'll come back, perhaps quicker than people believe," said Cook. The deal includes Northvolt's projects in Sweden and Germany, as well as its intellectual property. Work was also underway to acquire its Canadian unit. Before its collapse, Northvolt expanded across the Atlantic but later refocused on Sweden as its financial crisis deepened, selling assets for nominal sums. PARIS: Jeep owner Stellantis said on Tuesday it sees sales revenue and profitability rebounding in the second half of the year despite taking a €1.5 billion (US$1.7 billion) hit from US tariffs. The 15-brand group that also includes Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat confirmed the preliminary announcement it made last week of a €2.3 billion net loss in the first half of the year, as sales in North America continued to slump on an annual comparison. But Stellantis's new chief executive, Antonio Filosa, said the automaker is beginning to see "gradual improvement" in sales volumes and revenues on a sequential basis "despite intensifying external headwinds". Like some of its rivals, Stellantis had suspended financial guidance due to the uncertainty surrounding US tariffs and regulatory changes, but it said it now sees an increase in revenues in the second half of the year as well as operating profit margin in the low single digits. Under former chief executive Carlos Tavares the company had long targeted a double-digit margin, but it fell to just zero point seven per cent. Stellantis also put a figure on the impact of the 25 per cent US tariffs on auto imports: €1.5 billion for 2025 overall, of which €300 million was incurred in the first half of the year. Part of the turnaround was taking a €3.3 billion charge, which Stellantis announced last week, which took into account the costs of adapting to new US regulations. Trump's massive tax and spending legislation, approved earlier this month, removed the penalties for not respecting the so-called CAFE fuel economy targets, meaning automakers can produce and sell more higher polluting cars in the United States. This is allowing Stellantis to bring back a number of models, including pickup trucks and muscle cars, that had been phased out because of their internal combustion engines to meet fuel efficiency targets and pollution limits. Stellantis said this and a "product wave" of 10 new models this year would support future performance. Company veteran Filosa took over as chief executive in June, half a year after Tavares left, in large part due to haemorrhaging sales in North America. Filosa has shaken up the company's management team and moved swiftly to jettison €2 billion of programmes considered as having poor prospects to quickly turn a profit, such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Stellantis shares slumped 3.7 per cent in trading on the Paris stock exchange, which was up 0.5 per cent overall. Stellantis shares have lost around 37 per cent since the start of the year and 70 per cent from their peak early last year.

Japan trade deal sparks hope for US investors, frustration for automakers

DETROIT: Shares of General Motors, Ford Motor, and Jeep-maker Stellantis, some of the biggest automakers in the US, rallied on Wednesday after news of a trade deal that will reduce tariffs on imported Japanese cars, as investors saw it as a sign of more deals to come. But the companies are not celebrating. Automakers importing vehicles into the US from Japan now face a 15 per cent levy, according to terms of the deal outlined on Tuesday by US President Donald Trump, down from 27.5 per cent. GM shares rallied 9 per cent and Stellantis rose 12 per cent, as market watchers said they anticipated further agreements could reduce other trade barriers that have hurt the companies' profits. Ford shares rose about 2 per cent. The automaker is less exposed to tariffs because it produces more of its US-sold vehicles domestically. On Wednesday, the European Union and United States were nearing a trade deal that would also set a 15 per cent tariff on European imports. GM, Ford and Stellantis have been paying up to 25 per cent on vehicles imported from Mexico or Canada, depending on how much US content is in the vehicles. The companies are concerned they could soon be paying higher tariffs on vehicles assembled in Mexico or Canada than on vehicles with significantly less US content made in Japan or the United Kingdom. Some lobbyists also expressed alarm that if South Korea strikes a similar deal with the US, it could become a low-cost market to assemble cars and trucks. "They could be the new Mexico," one lobbyist told Reuters. The American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Detroit Three, criticised the deal, saying it creates an easier path for Japanese imports than for some cars built in North America. Even before Tuesday's deal, Detroit automotive executives raised concerns that Trump's trade policy could end up giving an edge to foreign automakers who do not invest as heavily in US manufacturing. "This is a bonanza for our import competitors," Ford CEO Jim Farley said in February, when Trump initially proposed levies on Mexico and Canada, but not on major automotive centres such as South Korea. The United Auto Workers union, which represents workers at the Detroit Three automakers, said it was "deeply angered" by the deal. "What we've seen so far makes one thing clear: American workers are once again being left behind," the union said in a statement on Wednesday evening. The Japan trade announcement came the same day General Motors said tariff costs knocked US$1.1 billion from its bottom line, hurt by a battery of levies including 25 per cent taxes on imports from Canada and Mexico, and 50 per cent on steel and aluminium imports. Industry consultant and former GM executive Warren Browne said the Japan deal "put all vehicles produced in Mexico and Canada by the Detroit Three at a disadvantage" because they face higher levies than Toyota vehicles shipped in from Japan, for example. That could allow the foreign brands to undercut US car companies on price. Toyota, Subaru and Mazda are among the most reliant companies on Japan-produced vehicles for their US sales, and stand to benefit most from the lower tariffs, according to business-analytics firm GlobalData. Toyota imported roughly 500,000 vehicles from Japan last year. Japanese automotive stocks soared after the trade deal announcement. Autos Drive America, which represents those Japanese automakers along with other foreign car companies operating in the US, on Wednesday praised the trade deal, saying it would lead to further factory investment in the US. The deal is good news for Wade Kawasaki, executive chairman of the Wheel Group, a collection of aftermarket wheel, tyre and accessory companies based in California. Kawasaki said the group has been trying to break into some aspects of the Japanese market, and the lessening levies will help with that. "There is a certain group of customers who want American-made products. Those are the ones we were going to get," he said.
