Drag artist at library event says she is victim of ‘false accusations online'

Independent4 days ago
A drag artist who took part in a storytelling event for children at a Belfast library which was targeted by protesters said she has been the subject of 'abuse and false accusations online'.
Lady Portia Di'Monte said the event at Holywood Arches Library on Friday had included a reading from The Chronicles of Narnia and Dear Zoo.
The event, which featured two drag artists, was part of the Eastside Arts Festival.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed it had attended a report of a small demonstration at the library on Friday afternoon and engaged with those present.
Stormont's Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said earlier this week the event was not appropriate for children and should not have taken place.
Lady Portia Di'Monte said the event had become the subject of 'targeted misinformation and online abuse'.
In a statement released by Phoenix Law, she added: 'This joyful, ticketed event was held in a public library with full support from staff, parents, and festival organisers.
'It included readings of The Chronicles of Narnia, Dear Zoo, and stories celebrating diverse families.
' Children also enjoyed inclusive games, music, and a British sign language session – promoting communication and belonging for all.
'Despite its warm and educational focus, the event was disrupted by protesters whose actions created fear and discouraged some families from attending.
'The PSNI were present to maintain safety due to external threats – not because of any risk inside.'
She added: 'Since the event, I have been subjected to abuse and false accusations online.'
The drag artist said she is now seeking legal advice.
She added: 'When children see diversity reflected around them – whether it's queer people, deaf individuals, blended families, or those who feel different – it builds empathy, understanding, and resilience.
'These events are about joy, education, and creating spaces where every child can feel seen and valued.
'To the families, staff, and supporters, thank you.
'To those spreading hate – I will not be silenced. I remain committed to creating safe, welcoming spaces for all children to grow up feeling accepted and proud of who they are.'
Phoenix Law solicitor Victoria Haddock said her client had been the victim of a 'campaign of online abuse'.
A PSNI statement said: 'Two people were escorted from the building to further ensure that there would be no breach of the peace.
'At this stage, no offences were determined to have taken place.'
Mr Lyons said the event had compromised the perception of public libraries as a 'welcoming and inclusive space for all as set out in the Libraries NI policy'.

Priest attacked with bottle by man who walked into Downpatrick church before mass

A priest has been left in a "serious condition" after a man who walked into church before mass attacked him with a bottle. Fr John Murray was horrifically struck on the head at his St Patrick's Church in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, earlier today. The priest was rushed to hospital for a head injury and is in a "serious condition". Father Murray was hit with the bottle at around 10.10am on Sunday, by a man who entered the church in the small town in County Down. The priest had been preparing for what would have been one of his last masses in church before retiring. He was reportedly attacked in the church's sacristy before Mass, according to BelfastLive. A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "It was reported to police at around 10.10am on Sunday, 10th August that a man had walked into the church on St Patrick's Avenue and hit the priest on his head with a bottle before leaving. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of a head injury, where he remains in a serious condition." Detective Chief Inspector McBurney said: "This was a completely shocking and brutal attack and has left the priest with a serious head injury. "Our enquiries are ongoing into this incident, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault, or has any information to contact Police on 101 and quoting reference 543 of 10/08/25." In a Facebook post, South Down MP Chris Hazzard said: "I was shocked and saddened to hear the news from Downpatrick this morning that Father Murray was attacked in St Patrick's Church. "My thoughts and prayers are with him, and I wish him a full and speedy recovery. This cowardly attack is completely unacceptable and I condemn it unequivocally. I urge anyone with information to contact the police." In a post on the Downpatrick 'Family Of Parishes' Facebook page, the church said: "Parishioners will be aware of an incident in St Patrick's Church earlier today. Fr Murray is currently receiving medical treatment. We thank you for your prayers and well wishes."

Paddy McGuinness looks downcast as he steps out after 'struggling to sell the £6.5million Cheshire mansion' he shares with wife Christine

Paddy McGuinness cut a glum figure after it was revealed ex wife Christine are reportedly struggling to sell their £6.5million Cheshire mansion. The comedian and presenter, 51, was seen stepping out of his brand new £163,000 BMW on Sunday morning. Paddy looked uncharacteristically downcast as he paid up at a parking meter in Manchester. He wore a light grey boxy T-shirt with colour matched cargo trousers and a pair of white and cream trainers. Paddy's appearance comes amid claims that he and Christine have generated 'very little interest' in their property in the five months since it went on sale, with one source describing it as overpriced - even for the upmarket area it's based in. The couple separated in June 2022 but have continued to live together in the house for the sake of their three children, who are all autistic. The Mail On Sunday reported in March that Christine was left 'fuming over the price tag' of the home as she believed he inflated the price so it doesn't sell. A source told The Sun on Wednesday that Christine is 'unhappy' and wants to move out. They also told the publication: 'It's a lovely house with all mod cons in a fantastic location but there's been very little interest. 'It's the most expensive house in Prestbury on Rightmove but it appears the market's a bit flat right now.' Representatives for Paddy and Christine have been contacted by MailOnline for comment. In March Christine was left furious after husband Paddy put their marital home on the market for the £6.5million price as she believed he inflated the price so it doesn't sell. Her friends at the time feared that she would have to continue living with the former Top Gear host for 'the foreseeable future' because buyers will be put off by the cost of it - which is a staggering £4.4million more than what they paid for it in 2020. 'It is so overpriced, Paddy doesn't want to sell which seems like another tactic by him. 'It's insane that Paddy would put the house on the market for that much, they only bought it five years ago and house prices have hardly gone up at all since then,' said an insider familiar with McGuinnesses. 'The house is on for two thirds more than what they paid for it, it will never sell. It all feels a bit like Paddy wanting to control the situation and keep Christine living in the house with him for longer. 'Christine made it clear that she can't live with him anymore but now it looks like she will have to for a long time yet.' In an interview with the Daily Mail's Weekend Magazine, Paddy recently discussed his living situation with Christine and intimated the pair would continue staying under the same roof. He said: 'Yeah, still the same. It doesn't feel tricky. I think it would if you lived in a toxic household - God forbid.' Asked how their unique living arrangement works, Paddy added: 'If I'm at home with the kids it's great. 'If I'm working and Christine is at home with the kids, that's great. 'If we are there together, that's fine. As long as my children are happy, that's all that matters to me.' Its seven bedrooms have six en suite bathrooms and the house has been described by estate agents handling the sale as 'tailor made for hosting family and friends'. Paddy, 51, is hoping to make a £4.4million profit after purchasing the home for £2.1million back in 2020. He and Christine spent months renovating the property before moving in to cater for the needs of their young family. The mansion features its own gym, a huge kids playroom containing soft play equipment, his and hers dressing rooms, an orangery and a kitchen diner.
