Hindustan Times02-05-2025
Appreciating the ranking of government and aided polytechnic institutions, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday stressed on the need to include private institutions under the State Institutional Ranking Framework (SIRF) so that quality standards can be ensured, a government spokesperson said.
During a technical education review meeting, the chief minister said that for quality education, all technical institutes should participate in NAAC, NBA and NIRF evaluation, but comprehensive preparation must be ensured before applying, according to a UP government release.
He directed officials concerned to give top priority to the inclusion of innovation and practical training in technical and vocational education. He pointed out that in the last eight years, many concrete initiatives have been taken by the state government to make technical education more accessible, qualitative, innovative and result-oriented, and the encouraging results are showing, the spokesperson said.
The CM was apprised that 1.64 lakh seats have been enrolled at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, for the year 2024-25. The technical university has restructured the courses in accordance with the National Education Policy-2020, which includes MOOC-based study, choice-based credit system, multiple entry-exit and integrated programmes. In the session 2023-24, 12,739 students of the university got employment, in which the maximum annual salary was ₹59.91 lakh. Similarly, in MMMUT, Gorakhpur, students got placements in reputed companies on packages up to ₹52 lakh per annum in the year 2023-24.
The chief minister directed officials to further strengthen practical studies in universities and engineering colleges and emphasised on ensuring the availability of quality laboratories. He also directed the officials to complete the appointment process soon on all the vacant posts of academic and non-academic category.
He said that all the projects related to building construction and campus development of the newly established government engineering colleges in Basti, Gonda, Mirzapur and Pratapgarh should be completed within the stipulated time frame, so that the colleges can be operated from their private campuses from the next academic session. He added that while starting new courses in any institute, priority should be given to local industrial needs and possibilities.
During the review of diploma courses of technical education, the CM was informed that at present, a total of 2139 polytechnic institutes are operating in the state, including 147 government, 18 on PPP mode, 19 subsidised and 1,948 private institutes. Capital's education code overhaul

The scale of the challenge When asked the difference between the AAP's and the BJPs's education model, Ashish Sood said, 'We will never be able to counter them. When I say, we'll never be able to counter them, because we'll not be able to match their tokenism. We will not be able to match the hollow marketing ecosystem they have created. We will never be able to counter them or match them because they have a very big hollow marketing system supported by NGOs.' He further added, 'When I say this, we have visited many schools in these four months. Few days ago, I went to Najafgarh in a school that was my second visit. I was told that in the last 10 years, I am the first person as Education Minister who has visited there twice or thrice. In 10 years, in that remote corner of Delhi, the Education Minister, as they claim, I don't give a claim. They said that the Education Minister never came here. He came to lay the foundation stone of the school building named Bhagat Singh Sainik School and the building is still incomplete.' Beyond tokenism: 'Holistic education' When asked how the BJP government planned to counter AAP's political branding of education, Sood replied: 'We cannot counter them in tokenism. They had photo ops and slogans. We have a firm resolve backed by budgetary allocations.' He spoke about 'holistic education' that includes both regulation of private schools and upgradation of government schools. 'So when we talk about holistic education, we mean equipping government schools with modern technology and exposure, so that children from disadvantaged backgrounds don't feel left behind. When they step out of these schools, they should not feel like outsiders. They should be fully aware of the opportunities around them,' the minister said. For years, parents have protested fee hikes, with cases dragging on for years. 'In DPS Dwarka, the case has been in court for seven years. Children were made to sit in libraries as punishment when parents resisted fee hikes. That ends now,' Sood said. Sharing the plan for the city schools, Ashish Sood said that 21,000 smart classrooms are to be built in the next five years, 5,000 smart boards in a single year, 175 AI driven Abdul Kalam language labs and 160 new digital libraries. Sood said: 'AAP never thought of. Their obsession was with PR, not pedagogy.' Official documents show the government has sanctioned new computer labs in 200 schools this year, with plans to expand. There is also another proposal to integrate National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations, such as coding and financial literacy, into the curriculum.

Tribals in plains suffer injustice

Vinukonda: Vaditya Shankar Naik, national president of the Girijana Praja Samakhya and former member of the State ST Commission, stated that tribal communities in the plains are facing significant injustice and need political representation in the Legislative Assembly. Speaking at a roundtable conference in Vinukonda as part of the 'Tribal Public Awareness Yatra,' he called on the Central and State governments to protect the rights of tribal communities and provide them with political reservations. He also warned that no one would tolerate other communities being included in the ST list. The roundtable, held at the Joshua Kalamandir in Vinukonda town, was presided over by Girijana Praja Samakhya State president Raju Naik. Key leaders and intellectuals from various tribal organisations attended the meeting. Naik expressed concern that even after 80 years of Independence, millions of tribal people in the State lack basic necessities like food, shelter and even essential documents such as ration cards and Aadhaar cards, which prevent them from accessing government welfare schemes. He argued that for proper utilisation of the crores of rupees allocated for tribal development each year, a representative from the tribal community must be present in legislative bodies. He urged tribal communities to unite and fight for their rights. Naik pointed out that several tribal groups, including Sugali, Chenchu, Yerukala, and Yanadi, lack adequate representation. He highlighted that confining political reservations to the forest-hill areas has caused immense injustice to the plain land tribes over the past 58 years. He criticised the persistent attempts by successive governments to include other communities in the ST list, which is a painful trend given the already struggling state of the tribal population. He urged the Central and State governments to recognise this dire situation. Naik noted that from 1962 to 1967, Assembly reservations were based on a district-level unit, which allowed plain land tribes to contest elections in four Assembly constituencies - Kadiri, Kavali, Macherla and Jaggayyapet. However, a change in government policy in 1967 shifted the unit to a State-level, limiting tribal constituencies to only the agency (forest) areas and causing severe injustice to plain land tribes. He called on the community to fight for political, social, economic, educational and employment representation for the plain land tribal population, who constitute half of the State's total tribal population. This is especially crucial as the number of legislative seats is set to increase from 175 to 225 in 2026. He urged every tribal person to contribute to the 'Tribal Public Awareness Yatra' to ensure the message reaches every tribal region. The meeting concluded with a show of solidarity and the unveiling of posters for the yatra. Several tribal leaders attended the event, including Raju Naik, Ravi Naik, Jarpala Krishna Naik, and Hanumantu Naik.
