US-EU tariff tensions: EU extends suspension of countermeasures to August; Germany urges 'serious, solution-oriented negotiations'
"The United States has sent us a letter with measures that would come into effect unless there is a negotiated solution, so we will therefore also extend the suspension of our countermeasures until early August," von der Leyen said.
The EU's current pause on its retaliatory tariffs was due to expire between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, Germany's finance minister Lars Klingbeil stressed the bloc must be ready to act firmly if talks with Washington collapse.
Speaking to Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Klingbeil said "serious and solution-oriented negotiations" were still needed, but if they fail, the EU must take "decisive counter-measures to protect jobs and businesses in Europe".
His comments follow US President Donald Trump's Saturday announcement that the EU and Mexico would face 30% tariffs from August 1. He cited the US trade deficit with the EU as justification.
Klingbeil warned the move would create "only losers" and would "threaten the American economy at least as much as businesses in Europe".

He insisted Europe was approaching talks in good faith.
"Europe remains determined and united: we want a fair deal," he said. "Our hand remains outstretched but we won't accept just anything." He added that contingency measures in case of a breakdown in talks "must continue to be prepared".
Earlier on Saturday, Donald Trump sent letters to EU and Mexico threatening them of imposing a 30% tariff citing trade deficit and fentanyl crisis, respectively.
However, he also assured that there would be 'no tariff' if the EU, Mexico, or their companies choose to manufacture in the US, adding that the country would help fast-track approvals in such cases.

CB Gupta laid foundation for present administrative system: Rajnath
1 2 3 Lucknow: Paying tribute to former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Chandra Bhanu Gupta, defence minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that he laid the foundation of the present administrative system and introduced a tradition of service in politics. Singh unveiled a commemorative postage stamp in his honour and said that the stamp would inspire future generations and honor not just his name but the values he stood for — service, simplicity, and integrity. Singh emphasized Uttar Pradesh's central role in shaping Indian politics. "It is often said that the road to Delhi passes through Uttar Pradesh. This land gave India its first Prime Minister and elected its first woman Chief Minister. It has given direction to the entire nation," he said. Singh highlighted Gupta's contributions to post-independence governance. He served in the cabinets of UP's first two Chief Ministers — Pant and Sampurnanand — and held the CM's post three times. On his first day in office, Gupta reduced ministerial salaries and allowances to promote frugality and reduce govt expenditure. "He laid the foundation of today's administrative system and introduced a tradition of service in politics. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Singh shared how Gupta responded to a protest involving 10,000 people — including Chandra Shekhar who went on to become the PM — by arranging food for all demonstrators. "This act exemplifies his respect for democratic values and even his opponents," Singh said. "Power is not about privilege — it is about responsibility, sacrifice, and serving the public." "Gupta's humility and respect extended across political lines. He treated both allies and adversaries with dignity. He believed political disagreements should never turn into personal hostility," he added. "He played a key role in establishing institutions like a homeopathic hospital and a children's museum in Lucknow. He believed education was essential for progress and promoted hostels, schools, and libraries," he said. "At the time of his death, he had only Rs 10,000 in his account — a testament to his selfless life," Singh said. "Gupta was more than a leader — he was a true public servant," Singh said.

Balaramapuram road widening: Compensation disbursement to landowners likely this month
Thiruvananthapuram: Disbursement of compensation to 52 landowners affected by Kodinada-Vazhimukku road widening project is finally expected to commence this month after the district collector's office submits the finalised beneficiary list. Though state govt approved the package weeks ago, procedural delays in compiling the final list stalled the release of funds by the finance department. Parassala MLA C K Hareendran, overseeing the land acquisition, expressed confidence that the delay would be resolved swiftly. "There will not be any more delay. It's true there was some delay in handing over the list. The district collector is in New Delhi now. Once she returns, the list will be handed over and the compensation will be released," he said. The Rs 104-crore compensation, sanctioned by KIIFB, covers land acquisition and structure valuation. This is besides Rs 102.4 crore approved in June, raising the total compensation pool to approximately Rs 200 crore, including Rs 160 crore for land and Rs 40 crore for structures. Land acquisition efforts remained active despite the delay. Demolition along the 1.5 km stretch from Vazhimukku to Balaramapuram had begun earlier and was conducted by a Kunjalumoodu-based contractor under KRFB oversight. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The initial delay was mainly due to financial clearances and technicalities in verifying landowner documentation. Once the beneficiary list is submitted, the finance department will transfer funds to the district collector, who will redirect it to the special tahsildar, triggering direct bank transfers to landowners shortly thereafter. Following fund release, public works department will issue tenders by Sept with construction set to begin in Oct, said Hareendran. The expanded road, widened to 30.2m, aims to ease chronic traffic congestion on the NH-66 corridor and better connect Parassala and Neyyattinkara to Thiruvananthapuram. The removal of plans for an underpass at Balaramapuram Junction, due to local opposition, pivoted focus to utilising govt land along a 300m stretch near Thaikkappalli mosque, reducing private land requirements.

Ecological concerns being raised over Sharavathi pumped storage project
Shivamogga: Karnataka's ambitious Sharavathi pumped storage project, designed to generate and store 2,000 MW of power, threatens both environmental sustainability and local communities living in the area. The project's impact extends throughout the Sharavathi valley, affecting the lion-tailed macaque sanctuary and surrounding areas, according to environmentalists. Residents of Henni, Marathi camp, Gundibylu, and Jadagallu face their second displacement within 50 years, following their initial relocation after the Sharavathi hydroelectric power project. Located 155 kms from Shivamogga, which is the district headquarters, residents of Gundibylu-Marathi camp near Talakalale dam in Sagar taluk have received notices. Authorities plan to acquire approximately twelve houses and associated properties. The forest department has allowed marking the trees near residences, despite lacking administrative project approval, the villagers alleged. The taluk administration has issued three notices regarding compensation settlement, culminating in a Friday meeting led by MLA Gopal Krishna Belur. The indigenous Kunbi Marathi community, who have inhabited the area for generations, faces fresh displacement. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 목에 주름이 생기는 '진짜' 이유 뷰앤디 더 알아보기 Undo Speaking to TOI, 49-year-old Manjunath expressed concern about their housing rights and pending land rights certificates.
