Plapp solos to Giro stage eight win, Ulissi takes pink jersey
After nearly 20 riders formed a breakaway group with 100 km to go, Plapp switched gears when he attacked the Montelago climb and the Australian did not look back as he rode to victory with no chaser in sight.
Wilco Kelderman of Visma-Lease a Bike finished second while XDS-Astana's Diego Ulissi came in third, with both riders finishing 38 seconds behind Plapp.
But Ulissi's effort was enough for him to take the overall leader's pink jersey from Juan Ayuso, with the Italian screaming in delight when he was told the "Maglia Rosa" was his.

He has been limited to just 32 senior appearances in all competitions, with injuries and fierce competition for places curtailing his opportunities. The midfielder showed flashes of his ability during his loan at Dortmund last term, where he made 14 appearances, but was unable to establish himself as a guaranteed starter. He scored once as the German club secured Champions League qualification. Juventus, under manager Igor Tudor, view Chukwuemeka as a versatile option capable of operating either as a central midfielder or further forward. The Serie A side, who enquired about the midfielder in January, are expected to continue discussions in the coming days, but will need to come close to Chelsea's valuation.
