Two zoom lenses on a single large sensor
Variable aperture for the main camera
Large 5,170 mAh battery
3.7x zoom for portraits and telephoto street photography
10x zoom for impressive close-ups
What else is there?
The Huawei Pura 80 series debuted less than a month ago in China and besides the Ultra model, there's also the vanilla Huawei Pura 80, the Pura 80 Pro and the Pura 80 Pro Plus. The Ultra is, of course, the most powerful of them all and is the one that fans were hoping to step outside its homeland:The phone utilizes a 50 MP large, 1-inch sensor with a variable (f/1.6-4.0) aperture that's great for capturing detailed, vivid shots even in less-than-optimal settings (e.g., when it's dark). There's a 40 MP ultra-wide snapper and a multi-spectral Ultra Chroma Camera sensor that's responsible for accurate colors and precise, real to life hues. The star of the camera setup is the telephoto sensor, in front of which sit two distinct zoom lenses – that's the Switchable Dual Telephoto Camera:Huawei says that's the industry's largest telephoto sensor – and users can switch between the 3.7x and 10x zoom in the camera app. The camera hardware instantly moves the selected lens in front of the sensor and, boom, you're already taking photos of birds or capturing the lead singer's facial expressions at a concert from a great distance. That's a great idea. Such a system may turn out to be prone to issues, but I don't care – it's innovation, and innovation is what is sorely needed in the smartphone industry right now.The only thing I find a bit odd is the 10x magnification: that's often "too much". While 2x and 3x are perfect for portraits or capturing things that are a bit far away, there aren't that many day-to-day subjects that demand a 10x zoom. Don't get me wrong – I love what Huawei is doing, but maybe a 6x zoom would be more practical? The Pura 80 Ultra features the new AI Smart Controls Button, which provides quick access to frequently used functions such as the camera, flashlight, or AI lens, based on user preferences. The button includes fingerprint recognition for added security and ease of use. The devices also introduce advanced AI Noise Cancellation, which improves call quality by reducing background noise and enhancing voice clarity for both parties. The phone is powered by a 5,170 mAh battery, supported by 100W wired (and 80W wireless) charging speeds – and that's a convenience I can't give up now that I've tried it. Finally, to improve durability, the Pura 80 Ultra uses second-generation Crystal Armor Kunlun Glass, which offers better scratch and drop resistance compared to standard glass.Pricing and availability will be announced shortly and we'll keep you updated.

T-Mobile explains why your phone hasn't been working lately

Very dicey times are here for communication tools like smartphones. From July 17th through August 11th, Mercury is in retrograde. How does that impact your iPhone? T-Mobile disseminated a press release today to let is know that Mercury is considered to be the planet that controls communication among people and in technology. A planet is in retrograde when it appears to be moving backward in the sky. Keep in mind that this movement is only an optical illusion and in reality, there is no change to the planet's movement. When Mercury is in retrograde, those who believe that everything is controlled by the stars and planets expect our communications equipment will go crazy. One astrologer who knows what we should expect is Susan Miller who was dubbed the "queen of astrologers" by The New York Times . When she isn't looking up at the stars, she's writing about them having penned 18 books on the subject of astrology. Discussing Mercury being in retrograde, Miller said, "This phenomenon is one of the few that affects everyone in a fairly uniform way, and its effects are always obvious, especially in the days leading up to and on its official start." The good news is that Miller says that there is no need to be worried about this as long as you are prepared. For example, if you're buying a new phone make sure to add a protection plan in case you drop it. Don't wait. Back up your phone and have the latest software update installed. -Susan Miller, astrology expert Carry a power bank whenever you go out with your phone, and be on the lookout for phone scammers and digital fraud. T-Mobile 's Scam Shield is a free scam protection tool available for T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile customers. With Scam Block, calls likely to be scams are blocked before they reach your phone. Miller says that with Mercury in retrograde, communication can become "muddy." To fix this, she suggests that you make sure that your autocorrect is on when writing emails. "Mercury rules the mail and the conveyance of information," she writes, "so be extra careful with important documents. If you send documents through emails, be sure to call the people at the other end to ensure their receipt." She also recommends using your phone's camera to take photos of important documents or letters as backup copies in case they get lost. She also recommends installing a meditation or therapy app if you think you'll need mental health support during this period of time that she characterizes as "often stressful." Yes, this might sound a bit frightening for those who believe in astrology. But don't worry. Miller says that everything won't go wrong during this period. She says that while Mercury is in retrograde, occasionally good things will happen. She writes, "Mercury rules anything that begins with re: redo, reassess, repair, repeat, redesign, or revisit. I find people reconsider their stance when Mercury is in retrograde, and in some cases, conditions turn out to be more favorable to you than they might have been before. Perhaps a job you thought you didn't get comes back into the picture, or you take time to organize things around you and find something special that had been previously lost." T-Mobile says, "Sure, astrology isn't for everyone. But there's no doubt that Mercury retrograde is widely blamed for creating confusion when it's in full effect. Better safe than sorry, here we double tap into some tips from an astrology expert to navigate this cosmic event without the communications errors." The carrier adds that when things are going crazy, many go to Google to see if Mercury is in retrograde. Now that you know what it is and what it supposedly does, you'll know to take extra care when it happens.

OnePlus and Oppo's next move may be a premium and compact Android tablet

Referential image of the OnePlus Pad. | Image credit — OnePlus OnePlus and Oppo may be planning a new chapter in their tablet strategy, with both companies rumored to be working on compact Android tablets powered by a next-gen flagship chipset. According to a leak posted on Chinese social media by the reliable tipster Digital Chat Station, the tablet will feature Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is expected to be formally announced in September under the name Snapdragon 8 Elite OnePlus version of this device is reportedly slated to launch sometime in the first half of 2026, alongside the OnePlus 15T. That phone is expected to succeed the OnePlus 13T and could feature a 6.3-inch display. If this timeline holds, it would be one of the first Android tablets to use Qualcomm's next-generation high-end chip. Image credit — Digital Chat Station on Weibo Both versions of the tablet — from OnePlus and Oppo — are said to include an 8.8-inch display, making them smaller than the companies' previous tablets, such as the OnePlus Pad (11.6 inches) and the Oppo Pad 2 (also 11.6 inches). While no other specs have been confirmed yet, this new form factor suggests the two brands may be targeting the compact premium tablet segment, potentially in competition with Apple's iPad mini or Lenovo's high-performance Tab Extreme the close relationship between Oppo and OnePlus, it is not surprising to hear that the two might be developing similar hardware under different brand names. The two companies have previously released nearly identical devices with minor software or design differences, such as the Oppo Pad 2 and OnePlus Pad, which were both released in 2023 and featured the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 we still don't have pricing or a detailed spec sheet, the timing of the launch — well after Qualcomm's chipset announcement — suggests both tablets may arrive in early 2026. That could give OnePlus and Oppo a chance to position these models against competitors' next-gen tablets, including Samsung's expected Galaxy Tab S11 lineup and whatever follow-up Apple has planned for the iPad mini. As always, we'll be keeping an eye on this development and will share more once specifications, design, and regional availability become clearer. For now, the idea of an 8.8-inch Android tablet with top-tier internals is something that will likely appeal to users who want a compact yet powerful slate without having to jump to the more expensive or larger tablet options.

Redmi Note 15 Pro+ details leak

Redmi launched the Note 14 Pro+ back in September in China, and so obviously the brand is hard at work on its successor. Today, the first few details about the upcoming Redmi Note 15 Pro+ have been leaked, so let's take a look. The phone is said to sport a screen with "1.5K" resolution and thin symmetrical bezels on all sides, a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP telephoto camera, and a battery capacity between 7,000 mAh and 7,999 mAh. The Redmi Note 15 Pro+ will allegedly be powered by the yet-unannounced Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset, which makes perfect sense considering the fact that the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ is using its predecessor, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. So, compared to last year's handset, the new one will get the same screen resolution, and the same resolution for both the main and telephoto cameras, but a newer SoC and a much bigger battery. Whether these upgrades will be enough remains to be seen. Do note that the model we're comparing to here is the Chinese (and Indian) Redmi Note 14 Pro+, not the international one - Redmi sometimes likes to launch different devices under the same name in different markets, though in this case the differences aren't very many.
