Comedian Chris Parker On His Boyish & Satirical Sense Of Style

Comedian Chris Parker shares his perspective on fashion, from cultivating a distinct personal style to the scope of menswear in Aotearoa.
For comedian Chris Parker, playing the clown isn't an excuse to dress down.
'People have paid to come see me. The least I can do is iron my shirt.'
His ensembles are front of mind, as he prepares to head out on tour across Aotearoa for Stop Being So Dramatic. The show explores the titular accusation levelled toward Chris for his whole life through what's promised to be a 'dizzyingly expressive' comedy and drama.
For this round of performances, he toyed with screenprinting a 'Surrender Dorothy' T-shirt (yes, from The Wizard Of Oz) or donning a dance-appropriate leotard. Though, he says it's more likely he'll opt for his reliable onstage uniform dressing – there's a rotating cast of cool button-ups, some white singlets and minimalist Thom Morison trousers.
He's excited to see more playfulness in the stylings of other comics too – he points to the increasingly digitised mediums of comedy (see: Instagram) and the changing face of broad comedy.
'There was a time where comedy was held by a specific type of male and the industry was blocked off to other people, whereas I think queer comics have always historically used wardrobes to endear themselves to crowd.'
Offstage, Chris cultivates slick, boyish and preppy ensembles, revelling in the promise of quality clothing and local designers (even when he's wearing sweats on tour). He's found a need to distinguish between his workwear and his off-duty wardrobe, hence his brainy interest in fashion.

It's playful and youthful. I never really got over that big Scandie pull from like 2015, when everyone was reading Kinfolk magazine.
In recent years, I feel myself departing... I think it was the pull I found when I was on The Edge. It was a youth station but I was wanting to dress more maturely. When I go out, I like to be in a really nice shirt and pants and a jacket or a nice knit.
Weirdly, an artist who I've always loved and I feel like I've subconsciously pulled from is David Hockney. His style is so colourful and playful, and I really love the palette. I just have an affinity towards it.
I like crisp, clean lines [and colours]. I'm really kind of like trying to figure out silhouette more and as a tall guy that's quite hard. I was really scared when all the men were wearing like baby tees because I was like, 'I can't do that'.
That's why [I like] this Kowtow [one]... it's playful but it's wearable and it's comfy but it's not just a boring T-shirt. It really feels like it's reflecting who I am. I'm on a real quest for a good T-shirt.
I'm trying to kind of grow up in my sense of style while also holding on to a sense of play.
Who do you dress for and why?
I dress for how I'm feeling – so for me in a way.
If I'm feeling kind of drab, then I'll sort of elevate my look to pull myself out of that a little bit. It almost feels like my styling is medicinal in a way. It's a reaction to how I'm feeling.
In terms of the public eye... I guess that's why I dress boyish because when I dress masculine jokes start coming my way. People are like, 'oh, you look like a lad'.
I think, because of how I position myself in terms of my own gender identity – you know, he/him pronouns, but like not 'one of the boys' – I do feel a bit uncomfortable dressing hypermasculine.
This [Kowtow] rugby top, it feels almost satirical in a way, like provocative to wear that sort of stuff.
I do love a pair of stubbies, though. I think that it's quite a quintessential New Zealand style.
What first drew you into fashion?
I think it's that kind of transformative element of it, it's the idea of it all being a costume and wanting to look and feel or present a certain way, which I really like.
How do you think clothes and fashion have helped shape your identity?
They haven't necessarily helped shape it, but I feel like clothes have been a companion on my identity journey. So, it's like at any inroad, they've been reflecting what I felt at the time.
It's always just been like a companion to it all. It reflects where you were at, at any time. I actually just let go of a whole bunch of clothes that I've outgrown at a maturity level.
For a young twink somewhere. I wish him well.
Is there anything that you find particularly challenging or frustrating about clothing?
The scope of menswear.
It's actually really, really hard. There's Checks, there's Beach Brains – but again, they're like badass, whereas I'm playing little Christian boy. There was Thom Morison, and there's Porter James.
That's my biggest gripe and, obviously ethical practices and sizing.
Sizing is just crazy, isn't it? I'm a big unit and I would say the world of fashion is accessible to me, but it is still hard. Whereas I can only imagine people who feel like they're outside of those accessible ranges, it must be impossible. There's still so much work to be done there.
Is there any specific piece of style advice that has been very impactful for you?
Well, it's like Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep doing her cerulean monologue that everything is a reference of something. So, even if you feel like you're not involved in the conversation of fashion, you are a byproduct of it. You are a part of that wider ecosystem of fashion.
It's more fun the more you know your references and the more you learn about why you dress the way you dress. It's not trivial, fashion is such an interesting part of the economy, style, politics, gender, race, all of it.
I think the more you know about it, then the less you're sort of a victim to the toxic conversations of it. That becomes so much more healthy than 'I don't like the way my shoulders look'.
You're making an intellectual choice rather than like a self-defensive [one] because the world's made you feel bad. I love people that have personal style, because they look like them.

Alex Casey talks to comedian Chris Parker about his love of touring the country and going head-to-head with Marlon Williams at the Christchurch Town Hall. Chris Parker fancied himself a bit of a singer growing up. He was in the special choir, competed in Christchurch Music Festival competitions and even starred as Caiaphas in the Christchurch Boys' High production of Jesus Christ Superstar. But as he got older, he describes feeling self-conscious about it. 'I started to think, 'maybe I'm not actually a good singer at all',' he says. It was only years later that he realised where that insecurity had stemmed from – next to him in many of those choirs, competitions and performances had been his classmate, Marlon Williams. ' That's why I was so hard on myself,' Parker laughs. 'Because I grew up singing alongside our country's greatest voice.' In a fortuitous turn of events, the pair will be reunited once more in Christchurch's Town Hall, with Williams' Te Whare Tīwekaweka tour in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium and Parker's Stop Being So Dramatic in the James Hay Theatre on Saturday June 28. 'Huge booking error on my behalf,' says Parker. 'Luckily he has already sold out so I'll just get any riff raff that's left.' While he hasn't talked to Williams about the coincidence, Parker has high hopes: 'afterwards we can swing open the doors and all climb into the big cone in the square, something fun like that.' He jokes, but there are nerves around performing in front of his home crowd. 'A lot of the show is about Christchurch – doing ballet as a kid and amateur dramatics as a young boy, and the community that you form,' he says. 'It's also about the cringe that makes you give up what you love the most.' There's also a bigger and timelier motivation behind the show. 'I got really bummed out about all the Destiny Church stuff and I felt myself getting quieter,' Parker says. 'I've been driven by that feeling of not giving up – because that's what they want.' The other thing that keeps Parker going is his love of touring stand-up around Aotearoa, even if it does get lonely sometimes. 'You go crazy because you're just on your own all day not talking to anyone, and then suddenly you're on the Wellington Opera House stage talking to everyone.' While there are some similarly large venues on the tour, he has a soft spot for 'unlocking' the audience in a new small town. 'Especially somewhere like Ranfurly and they come up and say 'you picked a terrible night to visit because it's Jan's 50th and we're all there'. I love that.' From performing everywhere 'right down the bottom to the very top' Parker has also seen the inside of a lot of shopping centres and malls, and intends to review them on Instagram during his tour in a series called Top of the Shops. 'Growing up in Christchurch I was raised in the mall, so I always find it really relaxing walking past a Strandbags on my way to a Muffin Break,' he says. 'There's some great malls in this country, especially The Meridian in Dunedin. In Christchurch it might be Riccarton, but I also think that South City is a phenomenal mall.' The flipside of this is that he's also familiar with the 'grim' town centres that have either not bounced back post-Covid, or been ravaged by the cost of living. Paired with a record number of young New Zealanders leaving the country, including many of Parker's comedy contemporaries like Two Hearts, David Correos and Alice Snedden, he's been thinking a lot about why people would want to stay. 'We have to figure out what's going to keep young people here, and I think a big part of that is that our cities are these fun, vibrant and amazing places to live.' The local entertainment industry has a lot to do with that vibrancy, but Parker likens the current situation to a candle that burns too quickly. 'It tunnels down fast, but then not enough oxygen gets in, and it snuffs itself out,' he says. 'There's just not enough people here who can keep turning up to stuff.' Even with its challenges, he feels a sense of duty to keep championing live events across Aotearoa. 'To an extent, it is up to people like us to be the reason why people want to go out and enjoy their life, rather than sitting at home watching AI videos.' His current tour includes sold out dates across Australia and the UK, but Parker insists he won't be going anywhere – and not just because he recently adopted a rescue dog. 'I don't want to give up on New Zealand. Whenever I'm in Australia, everyone's like 'surely, you'll just move over?' And I just say 'I love breakfast TV too much. I love Chris Chang, we can't move'.' His only hope is that audiences continue to show the same enthusiasm for live acts. 'It's our local talent who want the best for our country, so we need to keep turning up for them.' 'We want to stay here – I'm gagging to stay here.'

Photo: Ella Scott-Fleming Get ready for naughty, tap-dancing nuns as the West Otago Theatrical Society's latest production premieres this week, with back-to-back musical numbers and convent humour in between. Nunsense: The MEGA Musical Version runs until June 28, and The Ensign caught a preview showing last week. The story begins when the lead nuns discover their chef has accidentally poisoned the other 52 residents of their convent with a tainted vichyssoise. The nuns, and one priest, then scramble to come up with the funds for the burials and a musical fundraiser with hilarity ensues. The song-and-dance numbers showcase the talents of the amateur cast with several standout performances. As Sister Hubert, second in-charge to Helen Schmidt's Mother Superior, Kim McKechie shows off her vocal talents as well as comedic timing. Ms McKechie said she was quite surprised to be playing the role, but enjoyed exploring her character's cheeky side. "She's not the nun-iest of nuns, that one, she's a little bit boisterous at times," she said. The show features some crowd interaction, particularly during the intermission, where Ms McKechie kept the audience entertained. "So often there's that barrier with the lights, and you're on the other side and they're on that side," she said. "It really makes it feel like the nuns are really out there putting on a show for the community," she said. Another standout was Olivia Butler, who plays the Brooklyn-born Sister Robert Anne, and whose powerful voice shone through during the musical numbers. Ms Butler caught the theatre bug 14 years ago when she was 11, first playing a munchkin for the society's production of The Wizard of Oz. She has been performing with the society ever since and has also entered the Milton A&P Show's talent competition with her singing. In between numbers, the show boasts convent-based gags and frisky humour, poking light-hearted fun at the institution. "God doesn't love ugly," Sister Hubert says at one point. Ms Schmidt's Irish accent and grumpy act as Mother Superior was very convincing as well as Taitum Shawe's lead role as Sister Amnesia. This is Ms Shawe's second role with the society and she said she was grateful for the direction team for giving her the chance. Not being too fond of the spotlight in the past, some of Ms Shawe's shyness lends itself to the airy role of the the aptly named Sister Amnesia.
