Nonprofit for Abilene kids: Child pornography case not related to ex-worker's role
A Big Brothers Big Sisters Abilene spokesman provided additional information on a case involving a former BBBS employee facing a child pornography-related charge.
Joel Michael Paris, 39, of Abilene was free Thursday from the Taylor County Jail on a $100,000 bond with conditions, online jail records show.
'Based on the initial police report that we've read, the allegations against Mr. Paris have nothing to do with his role as an employee of Big Brothers Big Sisters or any of the children in the program,' Dwayne Bivona, BBBS Abilene spokesman, said Thursday.
Paris' social media listed him as an employee of BBBS Abilene and the volunteer director for BBBS Lone Star.
In collaboration with U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Abilene police arrested Paris on Wednesday at his now former workplace after receiving a cyber tip, an Abilene Police Department media release said Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the jail and an APD media release listed Paris as charged with promotion of child pornography.
On Thursday, the jail's online records listed the charge as possession of child pornography.
Both offenses are second degree felonies punishable by as much as two to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000 in case of a conviction. Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Through a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, detectives were able to identify a video uploaded via messaging app Discord that depicted girls ages 12 to 14 engaging in sexual conduct, the APD media release said. A search warrant was executed at his home.
Abilene police are encouraging anyone with information related to this case or other allegations to contact the Cyber Crimes Unit at 325-676-6610, the media release said.
BBBS Abilene said in a statement Wednesday evening that Paris was no longer with the nonprofit organization, which is cooperating fully with authorities and has a policy to thoroughly screen staff members, board members and volunteers.

Candace Owens has doubled down on her baseless conspiracy theory that the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron was 'born a man,' which prompted a defamation lawsuit against the far-right provocateur over the 'demonstrably false' claims she's made throughout her 'transvestigation.' Taking it even further on Monday, the MAGA podcaster predicted that Brigitte Macron's death would be faked before the case reached the discovery phase, claiming that the hypothetical staged killing of Macron would shut down all discussion 'about her being a man anymore.' Following months of Owens' false claims that 'Brigitte Macron is a man' and 'he transitioned' secretly decades ago, which have seen the anti-trans podcaster promote a byzantine and debunked conspiracy theory, the Macrons filed a 219-page defamation complaint last week. According to the lawsuit, Owens has engaged in a 'relentless and unjustified smear campaign' that has 'caused tremendous damage to the Macrons,' adding that her 'tranvestigation' podcast series was designed to feed a 'frenzied fan base' in 'pursuit of fame' and profit. 'Owens has dissected their appearance, their marriage, their friends, their family, and their personal history — twisting it all into a grotesque narrative designed to inflame and degrade,' the complaint declares. 'The result is relentless bullying on a worldwide scale. Every time the Macrons leave their home, they do so knowing that countless people have heard, and many believe, these vile fabrications. It is invasive, dehumanizing, and deeply unjust.' The 22-count complaint, which was filed in the Superior Court of Delaware, seeks punitive damages against Owens and her media companies. Brigitte Macron had already been awarded damages last year when two far-right influencers also accused her of being a transgender woman. The Independent has reached out to lawyers for the Macrons for comment on Owens' latest claims. Having said she'd 'stake my entire professional reputation on' the bogus claim about the Macrons, Owens reacted to the lawsuit by saying she'd been sued by the 'first lady man' of France. 'I am fully prepared to take on this battle,' she proclaimed on her podcast last week. 'On behalf of the entire world, I will see you in court.' During her latest episode on Monday, Owens assured her audience that she didn't need financial help yet and that she believes the case itself will just fade away because Brigitte Macron would stage her death in order to avoid the 'truth' from coming out. "You know, I always want to be, if I ever come to and I say, I'm putting up a GoFundMe and I need the money, I want to make sure I really need the money, you know, and right now, we're obviously looking and talking with lawyers,' she said in response to a viewer question. 'We do not really need the money at this moment. It's very early on.' At the same time, she stated that lawsuits of this nature can be very invasive and expensive, but that it was the Macrons – and not her – who would blink first and find a way to drop the lawsuit. 'But I know that the process is supposed to be the pain, that they want to drag this out,' she asserted. 'I can't see them wanting to make it to discovery. I just don't see that happening.' Owens continued: 'I think they'll fake kill Brigitte first. They'll be like, 'Oh, Brigitte passed away from stress because of what Candace did. Oh, nobody can talk about her being a man anymore because Brigitte's gone.'' After floating the idea of a 'fake' death in order to avoid going through discovery and depositions, saying this would be the 'more likely' scenario, Owens then admitted she had no idea that any of this would actually occur. Teenager arrested in Paris on suspicion of murder as Met continue investigation into shooting of Keanu Harker
A teenager has been arrested in Paris on suspicion of murder as police continue to investigate the killing of Keanu Harker in north London. The 18-year-old was found with gunshot wounds on Great Cambridge Road in Southbury, Enfield on the evening of June 26. Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Mr Harker later died in hospital from his injuries. On Sunday, an international arrest warrant was issued for a 17-year-old boy, who has not been named by authorities. The Metropolitan Police said extradition proceedings "will commence in due course" following his arrest. That same day, an 18-year-old girl was arrested at London St Pancras International station on suspicion of assisting an offender. Scotland Yard added that the female suspect remains in custody. Several other arrests have been made relating to Mr Harker's alleged murder, with two people charged in connection with the investigation. A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on June 29 and charged the following day with murder. Eliezer Mbike, 25, of Oulton Road, Tottenham, was arrested and charged on June 30 with perverting the course of justice. A trial will commence at the Old Bailey in May. A 39-year old man was arrested on July 24 on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. However, he has since been bailed to return in September pending further inquiries.
