Are These $20 Costco Pants a Lululemon Dupe? We Investigated.

New York Times17-04-2025

While I tested Lululemon's pants in the Classic Fit, they were still decidedly slim-fit on me. With a leg opening of just over 6 inches in the Classic Fit, I cannot imagine how slim Lululemon's actual slim-fit pants are. These pants fit more like joggers and looked silly when worn over Blundstones.
Kirkland's pants, however, had a slightly wider leg opening, at more than 7 inches. In general, Kirkland's men's clothing is less slim-fitting than that of stores like J.Crew, which can make them look bulkier and less fashionable at times. But in this instance, I think this design aesthetic works to Kirkland's advantage. The slightly slimmer fit of the Lululemon ABC pants (top) against the Kirkland pants' wider leg opening (bottom). But there were issues.
Although it is difficult to measure rise when pants have a gusseted crotch, the Kirkland pants came up higher and sat closer to my natural waist. Although I usually find a higher rise more flattering and versatile, that was not the case here. Something about the design of these trousers created a lot of fabric tension in the upper part of my body, which at times gave the pants a kind of moose-knuckley aesthetic I most assuredly would not want to wear in public.
By comparison, slim though they may be, the Lululemon ABC pants fit comfortably in the seat and did not create a series of unflattering lines around the crotch.
Over the course of about two weeks, I swapped out my daily uniform of black jeans for these two pairs of pants, wearing them in my daily life, on long car rides, to the movies, and out in the world.
I found that the ABC pants, with their slimness and the visual look of their knit fabric, felt a little out of place in a business-casual wardrobe. The fact that they borrow design elements from athletic wear, jeans, and chinos makes them not entirely any one thing. Something about the aggressive leg taper that hugged my calves looked off when I wore them with a tucked-in oxford shirt. They looked best with more dressed-down styles such as hoodies and a cardigan, and with sneakers rather than leather shoes.
They were, however, exceedingly comfortable, and their lower rise and crotch gusset made them feel more like Adidas track pants than chinos, even as they resembled the latter more than the former.
The Kirkland pants were also comfortable to wear, thanks in large part to the gusset and the elastic waistband. But the strangeness of the cut made me feel like I wanted to wear them only in situations where comfort entirely superseded style. They would be great for a long flight, but the pattern made the pants pull in weird places, and unlike with the ABC pants, it made me feel more like a schlub.

These Comfy, Lightweight $42 Jeans Are as ‘Soft as Sweatpants' and the Only Denim I'm Packing for Summer Trips

If you typically avoid wearing jeans in the summer, you're not alone. While I usually live in jeans, once the weather turns warm, I almost always opt for shorts, skirts, or breathable linen pants. However, I've recently felt inspired to try out a pair of lightweight, summer-ready jeans, and I found the perfect pair at Amazon. I live in NYC, and I've been spotting drawstring jeans all over the city. The laid-back style pairs well with breezy linen blouses, simple tanks, and swimsuits. After searching for the perfect pair to add to my summer wardrobe, I've finally spotted the ideal drawstring jeans—and they're available at Amazon for under $50. Now, the Grapent Wide-leg Drawstring Jeans are at the top of my wishlist. These jeans first caught my eye thanks to their stylish wide-leg silhouette. Not only does this cut give an elevated appearance to any outfit, but it also means the jeans will feel breezier than fitted styles. I love the elastic waistband and drawstring detail, which will ensure a comfy fit, whether I'm sitting for extended periods or walking the streets of a stylish destination. Plus, plenty of reviewers praise the 'lightweight' feel of these jeans, and one shopper even wrote that they 'feel like sweatpants.' These jeans come in 13 different colors, including traditional blue hues, black washes, and even bubblegum pink. I'm adding a few different pairs to my cart, including dark blue and white options. I'll pair them with sneakers, sandals, and summery flats depending on the occasion. For petite shoppers, they would also pair well with heels, although based on reviews, I anticipate them being a bit too short to do so at 5-foot-7. While the Grapent Wide-leg Drawstring Jeans are currently holding the No. 1 spot on my summer wishlist, I'm eyeing a few more styles at some of my favorite retailers, including Madewell and Keep reading for more comfy and breezy jeans, trousers, and pants I'm adding to my cart. These drawstring jeans are even airier than the Grapent pair, thanks to the breathable lyocell fabric. This dark wash is so trendy and easy to style for summer, but these jeans are also offered in three other shades, including black. One reviewer called these jeans 'perfect for late spring in Florida,' so they're sure to withstand hot conditions, too. More than 1,000 shoppers purchased these linen-blend pants this month, and I think it's about time I join them. The thick elastic waistband is 'forgiving' and 'comfortable,' and the fitted waist complements the flowy, wide silhouette of the pant leg. According to reviewers, these pants are breathable enough to keep you cool in hot weather, so they're ideal for warm destinations. They come in 23 colors, but this natural shade is my favorite, since it's versatile enough to style with anything in my travel capsule wardrobe. These breathable cotton-linen pants are effortless and timeless, so I know I'll reach for them all summer long. While I don't have any big vacations on the calendar, these pants would be ideal for tropical destinations. One reviewer purchased a pair for their trip to the Philippines and loved them so much they decided to buy multiple. Choose from eight different colors, but keep in mind the lighter colors may be slightly see-through thanks to the lightweight fabric. Cargo pants have been in style for years, and it seems like the trend is only growing. This pair puts a sleeker spin on the trend, with minimal pockets and traditional cargo stitching. They're made of 100 percent cotton, so they'll be lightweight and breathable enough for summer days. I also love the coffee bean color, which will pair well with sporty T-shirts and lacy blouses alike. I love how these drapey Madewell jeans puddle at the floor, giving them a laid-back and elongated appearance. They feature a denim drawstring that looks slightly more sophisticated than typical drawstring jeans, but they provide the same adjustability to ensure the perfect fit. According to reviewers, the cotton-lyocell fabric is super soft and lightweight enough for summer. These classic linen pants come in nine vacation-ready colors, and I couldn't help but add a few to my cart. I especially love the butter yellow and navy color, although I'll also snag a versatile neutral. The linen fabric is lightweight and breathable, making it the perfect summer staple. Plus, the pants come equipped with four pockets, which are perfect for holding essentials. Pleated trousers have been on my wishlist for a while, and I'm eyeing this linen version from Anthropologie. They feature a super wide leg, which will keep things breezy, along with the linen fabric. I plan on pairing these pants with fitted tanks, tube tops, and cropped tees for laid-back, vacation-ready outfits that still look put-together. Love a great deal? Beyond Yoga Puts Lululemon and Athleta on Notice With Bigger Store Format

Beyond Yoga is stepping out, cutting the ribbon on a bigger store concept in Greenwich, Conn., on Friday and preparing an assortment that really lives up to its name. It's Beyond Yoga's first brick-and-mortar store on the East Coast and a big moment for the brand, which Levi Strauss & Co. bought in 2021 and which is now being prepped for a growth spurt that would put it into direct competition with Lululemon and Athleta at scale. More from WWD Revenue Rises at Lululemon in Q1, CEO Calvin McDonald Bullish Despite Cautious U.S. Consumer Why TikTok Can't Stop Talking About Lululemon's 2-in-1 Dress and Its Styling Frenzy With Shoes: The $148 Debate, Explained Authentic Brands Group Is Buying Dockers for $311 Million Leading the way is Nancy Green, who oversaw Athleta as it grew from 39 to 175 stores and has been putting that experience to work since becoming Beyond Yoga's chief executive officer last year. Green has been using her own particular blend of art and science to set the brand up for its next step. The arrival in Greenwich, for instance, is no accident. The company knows from its e-commerce business that the greater New York area is its largest market and used that data to guide it to the wealthy enclave. 'There's a big intuitive piece to this too,' Green told WWD. 'There's the data on where the bulk of our customer fans are currently, and then there's intuition. Does that make sense? Does that feel right? Because you can go into a market and there's multiple places you could open. We're opening in Boston [this year] and we can see where that customer bubble is in the Boston area. And there's multiple choices where we could go. We're going to Seaport because we stand there, we watch, we see our customer walking the streets. 'The other piece that's important is, Does the space feel right? That's also intuitive,' she said. 'Maybe it's not the right location or you need to wait for the right location. We're not going to go in just because the data shows us that that's probably where we should be.' Both sides of Green's brain aligned on the Greenwich store, a 2,760-foot-space that also has room to hold events and tap into that 'wellness-forward lifestyle' customer the brand targets. 'It's gorgeous,' Green said. 'Light oak floors, very natural elements and a lot of wood, a lot of very organic shapes, curves. The main reason for the larger format is that the line is expanding quite a bit. We needed a larger space to showcase the breadth of the assortment and to really just show the best expression of the brand. We're also [planning to use] these new spaces as community hubs, whether it's fitness events that we do in the store, community events, whatever is right for that store. We create very strong local partnerships with various studios.' The store comes with a new logo and is at the vanguard of a bigger rollout — both in retail and in terms of Beyond Yoga's assortment, which all includes or ties back to its signature Spacedye fabric. While the 20-year-old business has long had workout-ready gear and dresses, the collection has been growing rapidly lately. Puffer jackets were added last year. In August, the assortment reaches out more with wide-leg bottoms, vegan leather, sweaters, cashmere wool blends, varsity-inspired prep looks, styles for the trail and more. Beyond Yoga is done tiptoeing and is going even further beyond yoga with more looks that work from the studio to work to the street to the airport and everywhere else. 'First and foremost, we are a lifestyle brand that serves an active woman and man's lifestyle,' Green said. 'So we think about what are the things that they do? What do they need? Well, it starts with the activities that they do.' With the Greenwich opening, Beyond Yoga has eight doors and is expanding to 14 by the end of the year. Earlier this year Green said the brand could have 'at least 200 stores' over time. 'This is our 2.0 in stores,' Green said of the Greenwich location. 'This is a new concept. We are going to test it and we are going to nail it. We have to iterate and tweak some things as we learn and then we nail it and then we scale it. So test, iterate, nail it and scale it.'
