Meeting held under pressure: Jairam Ramesh attacks ECI over INDIA bloc meet

A day after Election Commission of India (ECI) met with the delegation of 11 parties to discuss its decision of conducting "electoral" revision ahead of the Bihar elections, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed ECI stating that the meeting "ultimately" took place "under pressure".
The Congress leader noted that the Election Commission earlier refused a meeting, however, later only allowed two leaders from a party, due to which some leaders could not even meet with the officials of the ECI.
"Yesterday evening, the delegation of the INDIA bloc met with the Election Commission regarding the special voter intensive revision ("SIR") in Bihar. Initially, the Commission had refused to meet, but ultimately, under pressure, the delegation was called. The Commission arbitrarily allowed only two representatives from each party, due to which many of us could not meet with the Commission. I myself sat in the waiting room for almost two hours", Jairam Ramesh said in his 'X' post.
The Congress MP stated that the ECI's attitude "weakens" the "basic structure" of the Indian democracy. He asserted that ECI is a government body and it can't refuse the opposition's request for hearings.
"Over the past six months, the Commission's attitude has consistently been such that it weakens the basic structure of our democracy. The Election Commission is a constitutional body. It cannot regularly reject requests for hearings from the opposition. The Commission must work in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution and its provisions", Jairam Ramesh's 'X' post said.
The Congress leader emphasised that the ECI cannot impose "arbitrary rules" for engaging with political parties.
"Most importantly, the Election Commission cannot make arbitrary rules for engaging with political parties--such as the number of representatives, their positions, or deciding who is authorized and who is not", the Congress leader said.
Claiming that when the opposition called the rules from the ECI "arbitrary and misleading", the body replied, "This is the new Commission." Ramesh said that this answer from the ECI, the concern of the opposition has deepened as they feel that what will be the next step of the electoral body.
"When the delegation called these rules arbitrary and misleading, the Commission responded: "This is the new Commission." Hearing this, the concern deepens--what will be the next move of this "new" Commission? And how many more "masterstrokes" are yet to be seen? Just as the "demonetization" of November 2016 dealt a severe blow to our economy, similarly, this "voter suppression", which is emerging in the form of SIR in Bihar and other states--will destroy our democracy", Jairam Ramesh said in his 'X' post.

Latest LIVE: Heavy rains batter Himachal; 37 dead, ₹400 cr worth of damage estimated

Torrential rains have once again disrupted life across Himachal Pradesh, leaving more than 37 people dead and causing property damage worth over ₹400 crore, according to the State Disaster Management Authority. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for the state until July 7, as monsoon showers continue to lash several regions. Officials from the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority and the Revenue Department said the state has recorded losses exceeding ₹400 crore due to relentless rainfall. Rescue, relief, and search operations are in full swing, particularly in Mandi district, which remains the worst affected. Several roads in the region are blocked, and essential services have been disrupted. Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his first official visit to Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday (local time), where he was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Piarco International Airport. He was received by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, along with 38 ministers and four Members of Parliament from the Caribbean nation. This marks Modi's first visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister, and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country since 1999. The visit is taking place at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. During his two-day visit from July 3 to 4, Modi is scheduled to meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar to further strengthen bilateral ties. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has barred US-based trading firm Jane Street from accessing Indian securities markets for alleged manipulation. In an interim order, Sebi also directed the high-frequency trading firm to disgorge ₹4,844 crore in 'unlawful' gains. The ban will remain in effect until the firm complies with the order to surrender the alleged illegal profits. Sebi's investigation found that Jane Street was responsible for a substantial share of net buying in the 12 Bank Nifty component stocks and their futures. This 'burst of buying' was aimed at influencing the prices of these securities, enabling the firm to take significantly larger and more profitable positions in the highly liquid index options segment.

As Kharge reaches Hyderabad, posters accusing Congress of violating Constitution put up in Hyderabad

On Friday (July 4, 2025) when All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge arrived in Hyderabad, posters and flexi banners were put up at several junctions and bus stops targeting the Congress government accusing it of governing with an iron hand violating the Constitution. The banners without any names of the publishers claimed that the Congress government unleashed violence and atrocities against the people. It was further charged that people were arrested and implicated in false cases for demanding the implementation of [2023 Assembly] poll promises.. Mocking the Congress party's slogan of 'Save the Constitution,' the posters claimed that the government was 'Destroying the Constitution' and harassed people in Telangana. The slogans filled with sarcasm included 'Jai Bapu, violence is our weapon,' 'Jai Bhim, SCs/STs are our goal,' and 'Jai Samvidhan, Constitution is of no importance to us.' Pictures of police arresting people were also included in the posters. The posters appeared overnight, and there was no mention of any political party or the organisations that prepared the posters. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) was asked to remove the posters put up at public places without any permission. Congress party, however, accused the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) of resorting to cheap politics and said such posters have become a norm whenever a national level Congress leader tours Hyderabad. The BRS's desperation to paint the Congress government in a bad light has reached the lowest levels, but there are no takers for its claims as people have not forgotten how it suppressed democratic protests, Congress Media Committee Chairman Sama Ram Mohan Reddy said. The BRS - which closed even the Dharna Chowk - talking about suppression is laughable, he said.
