1924: Friends Nathan 'Babe' Leopold Jr. and Richard 'Dickie' Loeb — the pampered sons of prominent Kenwood families — killed Robert 'Bobby' Franks after they offered him a ride home from school.
To the public, Franks' death appeared to have been orchestrated for money and for thrill. But the two brilliant masterminds behind the crime simply referred to it as a 'perfect murder' — for which they believed they could outsmart the authorities and would never stand trial.
After they dumped the boy's body near Wolf Lake in Indiana, they confessed to the murder and were brought to trial for what became the 'crime of the century.'
1927: Aviator Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris at 10:21 p.m. after flying for 33 hours and 29 minutes from New York. It was the first nonstop transatlantic flight executed by one person.
'Am I in Paris?' were Lindbergh's first words as he was dragged out of the cockpit of his plane, 'The Spirit of St. Louis.'
'You're here,' Tribune reporter Henry Wales — the first to greet the pilot — said.
1943: The Chicago White Sox won the fastest nine-inning game in American League history under the lights at Comiskey Park. The Sox beat the Washington Senators 1-0 in 1 hour and 29 minutes.

Singaporean jailed six months in Taiwan for stalking Golden Melody Award winner Olivia Tsao Ya-wen
TAIPEI, June 12 — A Singaporean woman has been sentenced to six months in jail in Taiwan for stalking and harassing Golden Melody Award-winning singer Olivia Tsao Ya-wen, after her obsession with the star escalated into threats and public confrontation. According to The Straits Times, Cassandra Low, a woman in her 30s, was found guilty by the New Taipei District Court of endangering the personal safety of Tsao, and of offences including stalking, harassment and public insult. The court's verdict, published on June 5, followed months of troubling behaviour that forced the singer and her agent to leave their homes. Low, described in court documents as a long-time fan of Tsao, began contacting the singer via personal emails and messages on Facebook and Instagram from November 2023. However, her behaviour took a dark turn after she was blocked on social media by Tsao. According to the judgment, Low reacted by posting threats and abuse directed at the singer, her family, and her agent. In one Facebook post, she wrote: 'I can be very aggressive. The more stubborn she is... don't blame me for whatever I do to her parents.' In another, she said: 'Blocking me, see how I slowly let her agent die.' The online threats eventually drove both Tsao and her agent to leave their residences in New Taipei City out of fear for their safety. The situation intensified in February when Low followed Tsao to Banqiao high-speed rail station after learning the singer was travelling. She grabbed Tsao's luggage and phone in an attempt to pressure her into restoring contact. In a video recorded by Tsao, Low is seen physically blocking her and demanding a reconciliation until police intervened. The court sentenced Low to six months in prison. She may choose to pay a commuted fine of NT$1,000 (S$43) per day of her sentence, but the court noted that her high salary as a Singaporean — reportedly more than twice that of a typical Taiwanese worker — meant a financial penalty alone would not reflect the severity of her actions. Low will be deported once she serves her sentence or pays the full fine. Tsao, 38, responded to the verdict in a June 11 post on social media, saying: 'This is the most comforting piece of news I have received recently,' and thanked her supporters and legal team for their help. Better known by her Chinese name Tsao Ya-wen, the singer performs primarily in Taiwanese Hokkien and won the Best Female Taiwanese Singer award at the Golden Melody Awards in 2021. She has previously spoken about feeling 'helpless and uncomfortable' when fans crossed personal boundaries, though she did not identify individuals at the time.

Local volunteer accused of raping, blackmailing teen girl
PORTLAND, Ore. () — A Hillsboro man is facing dozens of criminal charges after he was accused of sexually abusing a child on multiple occasions. According to authorities, he may have had more victims. Seth Michael Winkelhake, 40, is accused of rape and other charges related to child sex abuse. He allegedly came in contact with a 13-year-old girl he met online in 2018, then sexually assaulted her after meeting up with her in person, over the course of multiple years, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said in a press release. Rowena Fire latest: Level 3 'Go Now' evacs in place 'In January 2025, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office received reports from an outside agency of multiple sexual assaults involving the same suspect that had taken place in Clackamas County over a period of four years,' the sheriff's office said. 'The victim reported when she was 13 a person who claimed to be much younger than they really were and calling himself 'Jeff' began chatting online with her. This person convinced the victim to send explicit photos of herself and then used them to blackmail her into maintaining an online relationship.' Winkelhake allegedly convinced the victim to meet up in person, beginning in 2021. 'The suspect would meet the victim in a public place wearing a ski mask or cloth face covering to conceal his identity. He would sometimes blindfold her before putting her in his car. He would then drive her to local parks in the Oak Grove area where he would then physically and sexually assault her,' the sheriff's office said. 18 additional men allege OYA doctor abused them The assaults allegedly happened multiple times from 2021 to 2024, despite the victim trying to stop continued contact with the suspect, authorities said. On Tuesday, Winklehake was taken into custody without incident after detectives with the sheriff's office, the Hillsboro Police Department and the FBI executed a search warrant of his home in the 500 block of SE 7th Ave. Investigators believe Winkelhake may have additional victims. He is described as 6'3″, 200 lbs, with red hair and blue eyes, uses names like 'Jeff,' 'Done Jon,' and 'Marc,' and uses social media apps like AntiLad, Facebook and Instagram. He has been associated with two cars, a white 2019 Nissan Frontier and black 2002 Volkswagen Golf. Winkelhake is facing 23 felony and misdemeanor charges, including first-degree rape, third-degree sex abuse, first-degree encouraging child sex abuse and luring a minor.
