Not must for students to learn Hindi under NEP: RSS education wing
Amid row over languages to be studied under the National Education Policy (NEP), the RSS's education wing — Vidya Bharati — has made its stand clear that it is not necessary for everyone to study Hindi. Vidya Bharati's national president Ravindra Kanhare on Friday said: 'Vidya Bharti is of the opinion that education should be in mother tongue. This is something that has been said in the 1968 policy (on education) and has been proposed in the NEP as well. No language is being foisted upon any state. It has been said that children should read their language, one national language and any foreign language. If someone is from Tamil Nadu, they can learn Tamil or one from Kerala can learn Malayalam. It is not necessary for them to learn Hindi. The NEP draft had been sent to all states.' Kanhare was speaking at Vidya Bharati's annual press conference at Constitution Club. On the issue of rising school fees in private schools in metropolitan cities, he said 'if parents create pressure, fees can be redetermined'. He also said that parents must judge whether their children are getting quality education to justify the fees they pay. 'To determine the school fees is the job of state governments. In states there is generally a system where if the fees are to be increased, it would be done through a committee under the district magistrate. If the fees are to be increased by more, a state-level committee looks into it. Parents must see whether the schools are providing the kind of quality education that such fees must afford. If the parents create pressure, the fees can be redetermined,' Kanhare said. The statement comes in the backdrop of the growing concern over arbitrary hike in fees by private schools in metropolitan cities. The Delhi Public School in the Capital's Dwarka has been chided by the High Court as having become a 'money making machine' which treats students like 'chattel'. Answering a question on NCERT removing the mention of the Babri mosque from Class 12 textbooks, Kanhare said, 'To bring changes in the curriculum is NCERT's job. We must stick to historical facts in books. We have seen in all these years that misleading information has been provided in some books. If they have been removed now then there is nothing wrong with that.' Talking about Vidya Bharti's success stories in the past one year, Kanhare said while over 93% of students of its schools succeeded in Class 12th with more than 2,500 students scoring above 90%, as many as 27 of its alumni cleared the UPSC this year.

EPS plans to launch poll campaign from Coimbatore in July
Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is planning to start his campaign from Coimbatore, in July or Aug against the backdrop of DMK and BJP already actively engaging with the electorate, multiple sources told TOI. Meanwhile, BJP is preparing for Union minister Amit Shah's visit, expected on July 8, to address the new team of office bearers for Nainar Nagenthran. BJP may streamline its decision-making process by limiting its core committee to 10 members to improve efficiency as the party gears up for upcoming assembly election. Palaniswami is scheduled to hold a second round of discussions with district secretaries and functionaries on June 24, with a focus on the booth level committees and strengthening the party's grassroots presence. AIADMK's campaign strategy will highlight failures of DMK govt. An associate familiar with the campaign strategy said, "It is going to be a mix of rallies, road shows and marches. EPS plans to address issues from corruption to law and order during his campaign, aiming to capitalise on anti-incumbency sentiments against the Stalin govt." The AIADMK district units are actively involved in recruitment drives. They are focusing on attracting young people to the Ilaignar and Ilam Pengal Peravai, the student's wing, and the newly formed sports wing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Comment se préparer à l'avenir de l'investissement eToro Market Updates Lire la suite Undo The party's booth level committees are also prioritising the inclusion of younger members to counter opponents. Amit Shah's visit aims to strengthen the party's position in Tamil Nadu. "The minister told core committee members last time that he would frequent Tamil Nadu and closely monitor the political situation and work towards unseating the DMK govt," a BJP leader said. Shah's previous visits, included three in less than four months, to Coimbatore, Chennai and Madurai. Since his appointment as president of the state unit, Nainar Nagenthran finalised his team of new office-bearers, vice-presidents, general secretaries, secretaries, and treasurers, and submitted the list to the central leadership. "The changes will be very minimal as election is fast approaching. An announcement will be made shortly," a party leader said. Nagenthran, a former AIADMK minister, has been actively engaging with senior leaders from his former party, and vice-versa.

Poll tie-ups: Allies keep leaders on toes
Chennai: All is not well in DMK and AIADMK fronts as allies of the two Dravidian majors flex their muscles for a larger share of the electoral and governance pie. On the AIADMK side, discomfort has been brewing as state BJP leaders repeatedly echo Union home minister Amit Shah's assertion that an "NDA govt" will be formed in Tamil Nadu, even after EPS clarified that there would not be power sharing. Former state president K Annamalai went a step further and said he would want it to be a 'BJP govt.' BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran, hand picked to bring better working relationship with AIADMK, has been cautious. All that he would say is that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami would be heading the govt. But AIADMK functionaries say the party is under constant pressure to clarify, at every press interaction, that power-sharing with BJP is off the table. "As a result, there is uneasiness among the rank and file and the grassroot gelling of cadres of both parties is not happening," said a AIADMK leader from western TN. Though it has been more than two months since Amit Shah announced the resumption of ties with AIADMK, leaders of the two parties have not shared the dais so far. The tension has also been worsened by events like the Lord Murugan conference in Madurai organized by right wing groups and backed by BJP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Here's what a microbiologist says CNA Read More Undo "Politicising religion like this is against our party's ethos. But we are unable to openly oppose it," said a senior AIADMK functionary. Meanwhile, allies in the DMK camp are mounting pressure for greater space during elections as well as afterwards. In what is seen as a pressure tactic, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan has openly stated that he has no issues with the AIADMK and that his opposition is limited to the BJP and PMK. CPM too has said they would seek more seats. The party has also been critical of the DMK govt's functioning. MDMK which is upset that their founder Vaiko was not given another stint in Rajya Sabha is also eyeing for more seats. DMK leadership has started facing pressure from Congress quarters too as a Congress MLA said the party would seek not just more seats, but also a share in power. Political observers say that the parties are using semantics to mount pressure on their major partners even though seat sharing is determined by past electoral performance and power sharing by future outcomes. While AIADMK might have to do a tightrope walk to navigate the pressure from BJP, the DMK might not find it difficult to deal with the allies since the party might simply follow the 2021 seat sharing formula. "Its quite natural for parties to aspire for more seats. A decision on the seats would be taken by our thalaivar ( M K Stalin )," said DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi.
