Not must for students to learn Hindi under NEP: RSS education wing

Indian Express20-06-2025
Amid row over languages to be studied under the National Education Policy (NEP), the RSS's education wing — Vidya Bharati — has made its stand clear that it is not necessary for everyone to study Hindi.
Vidya Bharati's national president Ravindra Kanhare on Friday said: 'Vidya Bharti is of the opinion that education should be in mother tongue. This is something that has been said in the 1968 policy (on education) and has been proposed in the NEP as well. No language is being foisted upon any state. It has been said that children should read their language, one national language and any foreign language. If someone is from Tamil Nadu, they can learn Tamil or one from Kerala can learn Malayalam. It is not necessary for them to learn Hindi. The NEP draft had been sent to all states.'
Kanhare was speaking at Vidya Bharati's annual press conference at Constitution Club. On the issue of rising school fees in private schools in metropolitan cities, he said 'if parents create pressure, fees can be redetermined'. He also said that parents must judge whether their children are getting quality education to justify the fees they pay.
'To determine the school fees is the job of state governments. In states there is generally a system where if the fees are to be increased, it would be done through a committee under the district magistrate. If the fees are to be increased by more, a state-level committee looks into it. Parents must see whether the schools are providing the kind of quality education that such fees must afford. If the parents create pressure, the fees can be redetermined,' Kanhare said.
The statement comes in the backdrop of the growing concern over arbitrary hike in fees by private schools in metropolitan cities. The Delhi Public School in the Capital's Dwarka has been chided by the High Court as having become a 'money making machine' which treats students like 'chattel'.
Answering a question on NCERT removing the mention of the Babri mosque from Class 12 textbooks, Kanhare said, 'To bring changes in the curriculum is NCERT's job. We must stick to historical facts in books. We have seen in all these years that misleading information has been provided in some books. If they have been removed now then there is nothing wrong with that.'
Talking about Vidya Bharti's success stories in the past one year, Kanhare said while over 93% of students of its schools succeeded in Class 12th with more than 2,500 students scoring above 90%, as many as 27 of its alumni cleared the UPSC this year.

'Tamil Nadu outreach': BJP names Maharashtra Governor P. Radhakrishnan as NDA's Vice Presidential candidate

The BJP on Sunday announced Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for the Vice-Presidential election, after a meeting of the party's parliamentary board chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP President J.P. Nadda, addressing a press conference after the meeting, said the party had held discussions with allies and several opposition parties over the past week. "We hope the Vice President's election will take place through consensus. We have spoken to many parties, and while the opposition said they would decide after our announcement, we are hopeful of wider support," he told reporters. The decision to field Radhakrishnan, a seasoned politician with long-standing ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is being viewed as a strategic outreach to Tamil Nadu, where Assembly elections are due next year. Born on October 20, 1957, in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur, Radhakrishnan was drawn to the RSS during his teenage years. In his early days, he had already become an active member, shaping his political grounding in the Sangh Parivar's ideology. He rose through the ranks of the BJP, serving as the party's Tamil Nadu state President from 2004 to 2007, a period marked by attempts to expand the BJP's footprint in the Dravidian heartland. Radhakrishnan assumed charge as Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024, after a stint as Governor of Jharkhand (February 2023–July 2024). He was also entrusted with additional responsibilities as the Governor of Telangana (March–July 2024) and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry (March–August 2024). The BJP's choice underscores the party's effort to position a Tamil face at the national level ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. With his deep RSS roots and administrative experience, Radhakrishnan's nomination signals the NDA's intent to strengthen its southern strategy.

KDA Chairman demands early implementation of SEP

Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Prof. Purushotham Bilimale has demanded that the State government implement the new proposed State Education Policy (SEP) at the earliest. In a letter written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and concerned education ministers of the state, he said that the SEP Commission had given a 'very comprehensive' education policy, in a first-of-its-kind exercise. 'If the report is implemented properly, the state's education sector will change radically over the next decade,' he said. Further, he stated that several studies have confirmed that the three-language formula forcibly imposes Hindi and does not help improve the cognitive and academic ability of students. 'In this context, the SEP report, which has recommended a two-language policy with Kannada and English for the State, is a very timely step,' Prof. Bilimale said. 'It is important to note that the commission had not ignored non-Kannada and non-English languages while recommending a two-language policy. The report states that Kannada and English languages will remain mandatory as the first or second language, and that interested students will be allowed to learn their mother tongue as a third language,' he explained, adding that this was much needed in 'today's complex linguistic environment'. 'The recommendations of the SEP are mainly based on the Constitution of India, the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, The Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015 and all aspects of the National Education Policy 1968, 1986, 1992 and 2020, among other policies and laws. This is a constitutionally sound policy and can serve as a model education policy for the country,' he said, demanding its early implementation.

Sri Lanka govt slams opposition plan to stage protest on Monday

Colombo, Aug 17 (PTI) Sri Lanka government on Sunday slammed the opposition's plan to stage protests in north and east regions on Monday calling it a 'political exercise." Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) had called for day-long action to protest against the killing of a civilian in a clash with the military at Oddusuddan in the northeastern Mullaithivu district. 'This is clearly an attempt to intimidate the people in the north and east by frustrated political parties", Nalinda Jayathissa, the minister of information told reporters on Sunday. 'This incident had happened on August 7 and by August 9 three soldiers were arrested", Jayathissa said, adding that people are being misled for a political purpose. TNA and SLMC had initially planned to stage a protest on August 15 but it was postponed for Monday. The TNA said a group of Tamil youth who had visited the military camp in the area were assaulted by the military and later one of them was found dead drowned in a stream while trying to escape the military assault. Waruna Gamage, military spokesman, rejected the allegations of assault against the military and claimed that the group of youth were intruders. The arrested soldiers have been remanded till August 19 and they would be subject to an identification parade to conduct further investigations, police spokesman FT Wootler said.
