Texans, Browns swap picks in first NFL Draft day trade

New York Post24-04-2025

The draft day trades have started early.
The Texans and Browns swapped a handful of draft picks in the later rounds of this year's draft, taking place over the next few days in Green Bay.
The Texans acquired the 179th overall pick, the 216th overall pick – both sixth-rounders – and the 255th overall pick (seventh round) in this year's draft from the Browns in exchange for the 166th overall pick (fifth round) in this year's draft and a fifth-round pick in 2027.

The maneuvers could be the opening salvo for a Texans team reportedly aggressively working to grab one of the top offensive linemen in the draft.
The Ringer's Todd McShay had reported that he heard Houston had been attempting to move up in the first round, specifically naming Texas' Kelvin Banks Jr. and North Dakota State's Grey Zabel as two possible targets.

The idea would be to help give Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud better protection for the 2025 season after being sacked the second most in the NFL last year.
The Browns will have plenty of eyes on them picking at No. 2 overall this year with Cleveland potentially picking Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter with the selection.

Myles Garrett 'Prepared' to Handle Pressure of New Contract

Myles Garrett 'Prepared' to Handle Pressure of New Contract originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns invested another $160 million in Myles Garrett this offseason, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Advertisement And the team fully expects him to continue the Hall of Fame trajectory that his career has been on over the past eight seasons. Browns' defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz thinks that will surely happen and has high hopes for a great season from Garrett. "I really think Myles is going to have the best season of his career. And has to right?" Schwartz said with a laugh. "I've told him before, what's that Spider-Man quote, 'with great power comes great responsibility.' With the big contract, with the notoriety that came along with that, with the process that took to get him to that point, there also comes ... there's always pressure in this league, but probably a little bit more so. But I think that brings out the best in players, and I know that will be the case with Myles also." Garrett is a six-time Pro Bowler, a Defensive Player of the Year, a four-time First-Team All-Pro and a two-time Second-Team All-Pro. Advertisement And the Browns aren't putting all their eggs in the Garrett basket. The team got him some help with their first two picks in this year's draft, with defensive tackle Mason Graham and linebacker Carson Schwesinger. Garrett is coming off one of his most productive seasons with 47 tackles, including 40 solo and a career high 22 for loss. He added 14 sacks and 28 QB hits along with one pass defended, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Garrett will continue to do Garrett things. And that's part of what will hopefully make this Cleveland defense something for opposing offenses to fear in 2025. Browns Coach Reveals Shedeur Sanders' Chance To Win Starting Job

Browns Coach Reveals Shedeur Sanders' Chance To Win Starting Job originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns authored one of biggest storylines of this year's NFL Draft with their eventual move on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round after he was expected by some to be a top-10 pick. Advertisement Some so-called experts thought his college success wouldn't translate to the NFL after he played in an up-tempo offense with the Buffaloes. That's why it's surprising to some that Sanders is apparently adapting well to the huddle-first pro offense of the Browns - at least early in the summer. And maybe the "adapting'' could earn him a climb up the depth chart that includes Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Sanders. 'You can see them all winning the job, I think, right?' coordinator Tommy Rees said. 'And so in terms of the competition, we're so early in the process. We're so early in evaluating that. Yeah, I think, you know, we have a good group of guys that continue to push one another, and by the time September rolls around, we'll be ready to go.' Advertisement There are those in the media who are pushing the Shedeur idea. "Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," Martin said on ESPN's "Get Up" on Wednesday. "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation, it's also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge." OK. Meanwhile ... Rees offered intel on how the young quarterback is adapting during OTAs. "He's worked his tail off. He's putting in a lot of work as all those guys are. You can tell on the mental side of the game, learning the system and calling it and having that rhythm to it, he's put a lot of time and work and effort into that," Rees said. "When you do that the game starts to slow down and you can focus on finding completions. He's done a good job of that as camp has progressed." Advertisement But here's the truth ... Reports are that Sanders has been taking the fourth-string reps and has mostly been participating in 7-on-7 drills and not the 11-on-11 drills that the other quarterbacks have been engaged in. So, hype aside, we're still a long way from getting an idea of how Sanders can adjust to the NFL. ... let alone be a starter. Ex Joe Flacco Teammate Goes Off on Cleveland Browns QB's Mentoring Remarks

Ex Joe Flacco Teammate Goes Off on Cleveland Browns QB's Mentoring Remarks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cleveland Browns quarterback hopeful Joe Flacco was recently criticized for his revealing his thoughts on mentoring young quarterbacks. Of which he has three this offseason battling for the starting job. Advertisement Flacco simply stated that it's not his job to mentor younger players, but no matter how he answers, he knows he'll get lit up in the media for being wrong. 'It's a talking point. You can kind of, like, use it. It's a good question to bait somebody into answering, and no matter how they answer it kind of makes the guy that's answering it look bad,' he said. 'If I say I don't want to be a mentor, I look bad. If I say I do want to be a mentor, then I look like an idiot who doesn't care about being good and playing football..." 'I tend to try to be honest, and I've said I'm not a mentor. I play football. And in a quarterback room, there's already been a ton of times where there's learning experiences, and I have a lot of experience, and I can talk about things, and hopefully they listen, but it's not necessarily, like, my job to make sure they listen to me. And, you know, hey, hopefully you have a really good relationship with the guys that are in the room, and you naturally want to do that, you know, but that was a long-winded answer. But that's ultimately why I think you guys ask it.' Not long after those remarks went viral, former teammate and current ESPN analyst, Chris Canty, decided to make remarks of his own that make it sound like he didn't hear a word that Flacco said. Advertisement "Yes! [He should mentor young players.] Because mentoring a young player is only going to make that player better, Canty said on Unsportsmanlike." Which there in by makes the team better. You're only as strong as your weakest link. So the whole point of the exercise is that everybody makes everyone better. ... It's what you're supposed to do. "It's a ridiculous answer from Joe Flacco." What? It sounds like Canty didn't hear a word of Flacco's thoughts on mentoring. Flacco's point was clear, that while he may feel one way, no matter how he answers, he's going to get lit up. And in the end, he got lit up for the strangest reason of them all. Advertisement Canty and Flacco were teammates in Baltimore for the three seasons Canty played there from 2013-15. Canty was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft, where he played four seasons before joining the Giants for another four years. He ended his professional career in Baltimore after the 2015 season.
