'Little cramp' ends Detroit Tigers righty Reese Olson's day early vs Toronto Blue Jays

Yahoo18-05-2025

TORONTO — Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson started feeling something unusual late in his outing against the Toronto Blue Jays.
It was an irritation in the ring finger of his throwing hand, something that seemed to become more pronounced while throwing his changeup. 'Kind of little weird,' he said. 'Maybe a little cramp. I'm not too worried about it.'

But the Tigers took no chances. They took Olson out after he completed six innings of scoreless, one-hit ball against the Blue Jays on May 17. 'He said his ring finger on his right hand started bothering him on some of his pitches,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after the Blue Jays beat the Tigers with a ninth-inning walk-off single, 2-1.

Olson said he has never experienced that kind of irritation before. It was not a blister, according to Hinch.
'For whatever reason, you get these little things throughout the year, in outings here and there,' Olson said.

Olson threw 85 pitches (54 of them strikes). But Hinch said Olson's pitch count had nothing to do with the end of his outing. It was the finger.
'I think I probably would have been fine but played it safe,' Olson said.

The news about the finger was the only negative for Olson after this outing. He was simply magnificent against the Blue Jays, recording six strikeouts while walking just one.
'He was really good,' Hinch said. 'Early on, he was kind of going toe-to-toe with their pitching staff and getting his outs. He got some good double play balls which were important. He used his stuff effectively. So overall, he was pretty good.'

It was the fourth time this season that Olson has held a team scoreless. And it was far better than his last outing on May 11, when he lasted just four innings and gave up three runs against Texas.
'I was just commanding them a little bit better than I did my last outing,' Olson said. 'When I can stick the four-seam and sinkers down and kind of get them to one side of the plate and command it well, they have to respect that. That's when I get the swing and miss on those pitches.'
The Tigers preach throwing strikes and this was a prime example of why. Against Texas, Olson struggled with his four-seam fastball command, which created a ripple of negativity with his other pitches. 'So they don't really have to respect the off-speed stuff,' Olson said. 'Then I made some mistakes off of the off-speed, and they took advantage of it last time.'
But against the Blue Jays, it was the opposite. He commanded both his fastballs and everything else worked off of that.

'Today was more of sticking the four seam down and away to lefties and the sinker getting it in there a little bit to righties,' he said. 'Then once I establish that, that's when they have to respect the off-speed stuff.'
MORE SEIDEL: Chet Lemon did more off the field than he ever did for the Detroit Tigers
His only walk was a 12-pitch battle against catcher Tyler Heineman.
'A frustrating at-bat,' Olson said.
But it was wiped away by a double play.
Overall, Olson was happy with his fastball command. 'When I can command both my heaters, it kind of opens up the change up and the slider to where they have to respect the heater,' Olson said. 'So that's when I get the chases on everything else.'

Tyler Adams says USMNT not concerned with 'outside noise' from former players

Tyler Adams says the U.S. soccer team has tuned out criticism from former players. Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, who share the American goals record with 57 each, are among those who have been critical of current regulars not in the struggling roster preparing for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. "We don't talk about that internally as a group," Adams said Wednesday during a Zoom interview with The Associated Press. "The noise on the outside is the noise on the outside. I think we need to focus on what we need to do as a group and continue to build." [RELATED: Landon Donovan, Christian Pulisic, and the drama over USMNT stars not playing] Star Christian Pulisic is skipping the June camp and Gold Cup to rest after playing about 120 games for club and country over two seasons. "Whether it was Gold Cup, whether it was Copa (America), whether it was Confederations Cup, whether it was the World Cup, I wasn't going to miss competitions," Dempsey said last week on the "Men in Blazers" podcast. "For me, I don't understand it because that wasn't my mentality. I always wanted to play in those games." Watching Portugal celebrate its win over Spain in Sunday's European Nations League final, Donovan said on the Fox postgame show: "I can't help but think about our guys on vacation not wanting to play in Gold Cup." Pulisic has not spoken publicly of his decision. The U.S. has lost four straight games, its longest skid since 2007, following a 4-0 rout Tuesday night by Switzerland. "This is part of the process," Adams said. "You're going to win games. You're going to lose games. It's about continuing to build that. I think we're on the right path. We have to continue to build and try the things that we've been training. It'll take a little bit of time, but it will come together." Adams didn't dress for the Switzerland friendly but is confident he will be ready for the Gold Cup, where the Americans open Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago. "A little turf toe-type injury. More of an overuse thing probably than anything — overload. It was something that I picked up when I came into camp," Adams said. "Progressing well right now, but just trying to be smart and manage it." Adams, who captained the U.S. at the 2022 World Cup, funded a pair of mini-pitches at Pulaski Park in Poughkeepsie, New York, near his home in Wappinger. He spoke on the Zoom about his work with Allstate, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Black Star Soccer to construct fields about the size of basketball courts at the Fisher Magnet Upper Academy in Detroit and The Bell Avenue School in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. "Before the World Cup hopefully we plan to do one more with a city unnamed yet," Adams said. "It's something that I think has real impact, continues to grow the sport, serves underserved communities." [RELATED: Projecting the USMNT's World Cup squad: Luna over Reyna? Turner starts at GK?] Now 26, Adams is feeling back to his old self. He had back surgery last July with Dr. Robert Watkins and returned to the field with England's Bournemouth on Oct. 26. Adams played in 28 Premier League matches this season after being limited to three in 2023-24 because of leg injuries. "It's definitely enjoyable when you're healthy," he said. "The 16-to-18 months that it was just on and off inconsistency is something I never had in my career and never had to battle. And then when it hits you and you go through that, you just learn different ways to navigate things, enjoy life, just not take things for granted, all the little things." Since Mauricio Pochettino took over as U.S. coach last fall, players have had more autonomy to break away from rigid positioning employed by his predecessor, Gregg Berhalter. "From a positional standpoint, obviously we had probably a little bit of a different structure under Gregg," Adams said. "Maurizio gives the players freedom to find spots they're comfortable in and see how they can affect the game in different ways. I think our attacking players definitely have freedom to try and find the ball and create things in the right areas of the field. So, yeah, I think he gives everyone freedom, but there's still structure to the way that we want to play." Adams will be with the U.S. team in Austin, Texas, next Wednesday, and following intently when the Premier League releases its 2025-26 schedule at 3 a.m. CDT. He feels improved because of his time with Leeds in 2022-23 and Bournemouth the past two seasons. "After you play in the Premier League, every game feels slow,'" he said. "No matter what game I play in now the game feels slow. You look at your schedule when the season comes out and you have to play in a row Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City, Liverpool, Manchester United, all these big games back to back to back you just learn how to make decisions quicker and if you don't, you get punished." The Nationals Got A Historic Haul For Juan Soto, But It May Not Be Enough

PALM BEACH, FL - FEBRUARY 23: Left to right, Nationals stars James Wood, MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams ... More and Dylan Crews pose for a photo in the dugout before a Spring Training game between the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches on February 23, 2025. (Photo by Thomas Simonetti for The Washington Post via Getty Images) Juan Soto could retire right now and the Nationals still wouldn't have gotten enough for him at the trade deadline in 2022, simply because it's impossible to ever get enough for a potential all-time franchise player and inner circle Hall of Famer. Soto, who presumably will not retire right now and will not turn 27 until October, already has 39.0 WAR, per Baseball-Reference, which already ranks 28th all-time amongst position players through their age-26 seasons. If he'd accumulated all of that in a Nationals uniform, he'd already rank seventh in Expos/Nationals history, fewer than three full seasons behind Gary Carter (55.8 WAR). As is, the 21.4 WAR he accumulated in four-plus seasons with the club ranks 14th. But the Nationals did as well as any team could do upon deciding to trade a generational superstar. Forty percent of Washington's first pitch lineup in Tuesday's 5-4, 10-inning loss to the Mets — pitcher MacKenzie Gore, shortstop CJ Abrams, left fielder James Wood and centerfielder Robert Hassell III — was acquired from the Padres, along with veteran infielder Luke Voit and minor league pitcher Jarlin Susana, in exchange for Soto and Josh Bell on Aug. 2, 2022. 'I love it, I really do,' Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Tuesday night. 'These guys, it's good to see them up here, It's good to see them playing well, They're the core of our future and they're learning everyday and they're really starting to get it.' Thirteen of the top 24 active leaders in WAR among position players have been traded at least once in their prime (Starling Marte has been dealt three times). Per WAR, the players the Nationals received for Soto already ranks as the third-most productive return behind the package Cleveland got from the Mets in 2021 in exchange for Francisco Lindor and the players the Pirates received from the Giants in exchange for Andrew McCutchen in 2018. While Hassell, who played in his 17th big league game Tuesday night, has yet to register any WAR, Gore, Wood and Abrams have combined for 17.9 WAR since the trade — including 7.2 WAR this season, when they rank first, second and third on the Nationals in the category. Even without major contributions from Hassell or Susana, the latter of whom has yet to advance past Double-A, the Abrams-Gore-Wood trio is likely to surge past the Cleveland and Pirates returns in WAR this season. Andres Gimenez and Amed Rosario combined for 23.1 WAR with the Guardians, but both have been traded and the final two players Cleveland acquired, outfielder Isaiah Greene and pitcher Josh Wolf, have yet to reach the majors. Kyle Crick and Bryan Reynolds have accounted for 20.3 WAR with the Pirates, who have the fifth-worst record in the majors since the McCutchen trade. (In case you want to know why the Marlins are the Marlins and the Rockies are the Rockies, they got a total of 2.3 and 2.0 WAR, respectively, in return for Giancarlo Stanton and Nolan Arenado) Yet Tuesday night also served as a cautionary tale for the Nationals — one filled with promise but also no guarantee they can mount a return to serious title contention without either locking up their core or augmenting it with stars from outside the organization. Soto, who as you may know by now signed a $765 million deal with the Mets in December, homered in the fourth, but Gore threw six solid innings while lowering his ERA to 2.88 and increasing his major league-leading strikeout total to 114. He exited in line for the win thanks largely to Abrams, who had three extra-base hits — a homer and two doubles — as he became the first shortstop to deliver three extra-base hits in multiple games this season. Wood was 1-for-4 with a walk, but two of his outs were productive grounders to first base with Abrams on second. Hassell finished 0-for-4 and just missed making a sliding, inning-ending catch of Soto's RBI double in the eighth. Pete Alonso tied the score with a run-scoring single two pitches later off Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan. Edwin Diaz and Reed Garrett then set down six straight batters before Jeff McNeil delivered the walk-off hit. The victory was the latest reminder the Mets are willing to acquire high-end talent by any method under Steve Cohen — and that the Nationals who signed Scott Boras clients Patrick Corbin, Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg to nine-figure deals have been in hibernation for more than half a decade. The Nationals allowed Bryce Harper (also a Boras client) and Anthony Rendon (guess what, also a Boras client) to exit as free agents following the 2018 and 2019 seasons, though Harper's departure ensured the daily mood of the franchise would no longer be measured by his mercurial nature and letting Rendon walk might go down as the greatest inaction in baseball history. But the trades of Scherzer, Soto and Trea Turner (yup, a Boras client) in 2021 and 2022 are the ones that underline just how much more the Nationals have to do even after securing the best possible return in exchange for a superstar. Care to take one guess as to who represents Gore and Wood as well as 2023 first-round pick Dylan Crews?
