'Little cramp' ends Detroit Tigers righty Reese Olson's day early vs Toronto Blue Jays

Yahoo18-05-2025

TORONTO — Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson started feeling something unusual late in his outing against the Toronto Blue Jays.
It was an irritation in the ring finger of his throwing hand, something that seemed to become more pronounced while throwing his changeup. 'Kind of little weird,' he said. 'Maybe a little cramp. I'm not too worried about it.'

But the Tigers took no chances. They took Olson out after he completed six innings of scoreless, one-hit ball against the Blue Jays on May 17. 'He said his ring finger on his right hand started bothering him on some of his pitches,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after the Blue Jays beat the Tigers with a ninth-inning walk-off single, 2-1.

Olson said he has never experienced that kind of irritation before. It was not a blister, according to Hinch.
'For whatever reason, you get these little things throughout the year, in outings here and there,' Olson said.

Olson threw 85 pitches (54 of them strikes). But Hinch said Olson's pitch count had nothing to do with the end of his outing. It was the finger.
'I think I probably would have been fine but played it safe,' Olson said.

The news about the finger was the only negative for Olson after this outing. He was simply magnificent against the Blue Jays, recording six strikeouts while walking just one.
'He was really good,' Hinch said. 'Early on, he was kind of going toe-to-toe with their pitching staff and getting his outs. He got some good double play balls which were important. He used his stuff effectively. So overall, he was pretty good.'

It was the fourth time this season that Olson has held a team scoreless. And it was far better than his last outing on May 11, when he lasted just four innings and gave up three runs against Texas.
'I was just commanding them a little bit better than I did my last outing,' Olson said. 'When I can stick the four-seam and sinkers down and kind of get them to one side of the plate and command it well, they have to respect that. That's when I get the swing and miss on those pitches.'
The Tigers preach throwing strikes and this was a prime example of why. Against Texas, Olson struggled with his four-seam fastball command, which created a ripple of negativity with his other pitches. 'So they don't really have to respect the off-speed stuff,' Olson said. 'Then I made some mistakes off of the off-speed, and they took advantage of it last time.'
But against the Blue Jays, it was the opposite. He commanded both his fastballs and everything else worked off of that.

'Today was more of sticking the four seam down and away to lefties and the sinker getting it in there a little bit to righties,' he said. 'Then once I establish that, that's when they have to respect the off-speed stuff.'
MORE SEIDEL: Chet Lemon did more off the field than he ever did for the Detroit Tigers
His only walk was a 12-pitch battle against catcher Tyler Heineman.
'A frustrating at-bat,' Olson said.
But it was wiped away by a double play.
Overall, Olson was happy with his fastball command. 'When I can command both my heaters, it kind of opens up the change up and the slider to where they have to respect the heater,' Olson said. 'So that's when I get the chases on everything else.'

Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier earns 2nd Player of the Week award this season

Minnesota Lynx superstar Napheesa Collier has earned her second Western Conference Player of the Week award this season, adding another accolade to her MVP-level year. Collier's latest honor covers two Lynx games, during which she averaged 23 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2 steals and 1.5 blocks. She logged a double-double in each game. The 28-year-old forward was named the West's Player of the Week for the first four games of the season and Player of the Month for May. Collier leads the WNBA this season in points per game (25.5), steals per game (2.2), player efficiency rating (32.1) and win shares (2.4). Her play has the Lynx off to a 9-0 start, matching how the Lynx began their last championship season in 2017. Last season, Collier finished second in MVP voting behind the Las Vegas Aces' A'ja Wilson. She's having another stellar season for the Aces, but if Collier continues at her current level of play, it'll be hard for voters to deny her the first MVP award of her career. Collier also made the All-WNBA First Team last year and was named Defensive Player of the Year amid the Lynx's surprising but ultimately unavailing run to the WNBA Finals. She also won a gold medal with Team USA at the Summer Olympics. Since then, she's had a productive offseason. She was named the MVP of Unrivaled, the 3-on-3 basketball league she co-founded, and TIME magazine listed her among its 100 Most Influential People.

You could have bought a Roman Anthony auto for $45

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - JUNE 09: Roman Anthony #48 of the Boston Red Sox takes to the field in the eighth inning of his MLB debut against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on June 09, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by) That time is long gone. The Roman reign has officially begun. Baseball's number one prospect has made his big league debut. It wasn't perfect, but the market doesn't seem to care. He showed poise, and he'll undoubtedly get many more chances to prove why he was (or still is) #1. Advertisement As is tradition, eBay was immediately flooded with listings from savvy collectors looking to unload their Roman Anthony cards to the highest bidder. With the exception of generational talents like Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, or Ronald Acuña Jr., it's well known that a player's MLB call-up is often the best time to sell their 1st Bowman cards. A player's 1st Bowman auto is usually their very first licensed autograph or card in a big-league uniform, and for many, it's the grail. With rumors swirling about his call-up, Wilyer Abreu's injury hitting the news, and that grand slam clip going viral, Anthony's card prices have been steadily trending up for the past two weeks. His PSA 10 1st Bowman base auto is now hovering around $800–$900, with sales reaching as high as $949 in the past 24 hours, a significant jump from the $450 it commanded just three months ago. (Buy on eBay) The price of Roman Anthony's Bowman Chrome auto has increased considerably over the last 3 months. (130 Point) If that feels like a big leap, wait until you see what he was selling for in the early days. Advertisement According to Big Bob's Cards on Twitter, one month after 2023 Bowman was released, 1st Bowman autos of Roman Anthony were going for a measly $45—down $20 from the month before, on release day. That's a staggering 1,900% increase to where we are today. This is the kind of story we all chase in the hobby: a $45 card turning into nearly $1,000. It's the perfect encapsulation of why prospecting is both exhilarating and brutally difficult. No one would've blamed you back then for investing in Cam Collier, Druw Jones, or Matt Mervis—at least two of whom might still pan out. If you've held Anthony through all the ups and downs over the past two years, a big pat on the back is in order. It's a picture-perfect hobby ending. Advertisement And for those still holding? World Cup 2026 odds: Spain the favorite a year out from tournament

Soccer fans around the world have been waiting for the inaugural 48-team edition of the World Cup, and this week the tournament is officially just one year out. The 2026 World Cup will be held in North America, with live coverage on the FOX and the FOX Sports app. Bettors and fans already have their sights set on the world's biggest sporting event, which will kick off on June 11. After Spain defeated England to win the UEFA Euro 2024, its odds of winning the World Cup shifted drastically, moving to +600 from +900 overnight— and is now at +500 despite a runner-up finish against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final. The Spanish are slight favorites over France— with Les Blues currently sitting at +600. Another team to watch are defending champions Argentina, who defeated Colombia to claim the Copa América trophy last year. The team's odds have dropped slightly since last summer, moving to +900 from +800. The World Cup final will be held at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026. Let's dive into the odds via DraftKings Sportsbook. 2026 WORLD CUP ODDS: * Spain: +500 (bet $10 to win $60 total)France: +600 (bet $10 to win $70 total)Brazil: +650 (bet $10 to win $75 total)England: +650 (bet $10 to win $75 total)Argentina: +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total)Germany: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total)Portugal:+1400 (bet $10 to win $150 total)Netherlands: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total)Italy: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total)Uruguay: +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)Colombia: +3500 (bet $10 to win $360 total)United States: +3500 (bet $10 to win $360 total)Belgium: +3500 (bet $10 to win $360 total)Croatia: +6500 (bet $10 to win $660 total)Denmark: +6500 (bet $10 to win $660 total)Mexico: +6500 (bet $10 to win $660 total) * odds as of 6/10/25 On the USMNT side, the team's poor showing last summer has left fans wondering if the next big tournament will yield a more favorable outcome. Since the group stage was introduced in 1975, the United States was the first host nation to fail to reach the Copa América knockout stage. This summer's Gold Cup was supposed to serve as an opportunity for the team to gel with new manager Mauricio Pochettino, but the roster is not what most expected. Christian Pulisic, Jedi Robinson, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Sergino Dest are among a group of regular stars not participating in this summer's tournament for various reasons. Additionally, the team's odds to win the World Cup moved from +3000 at the time of their Copa América elimination, to +3500 currently. In February, FIFA released the dates and locations for the 104-match tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The US Men's National Team has group stage matches: – June 12, SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California – June 19, Lumen Field, Seattle – June 25, SoFi Stadium The semifinals will be at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 14 and at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on July 15. France is a team to watch, as they were one of the youngest teams at the 2022 tournament and boast one of the best players in the world in Kylian Mbappe. When you factor in that they had numerous key players out for injury in 2022, it's no surprise that they are now near the top of the board. Brazil and England have the next best odds to take home the Cup, at +650 to win it all. After being derailed by injuries in 2014, 2018 2022, and 2024, Neymar will be focused on his own Messi-like mid-30s redemption story. Or will he? Either way, The Seleção will be loaded, but they need their younger talent to step up to get back on the podium. Defending champion Argentina is fifth on the oddsboard at +900. Star Lionel Messi, after moving to MLS to play for Inter Miami, has not officially committed to playing in 2026— but their have been rumblings that he will. He did suffer an injury during Argentina's win over Colombia in the Copa América final last summer. Will that cloud his 2026 World Cup status is even further? La Albiceleste will return young talent such as Julián Alvarez and Enzo Fernández, so with or without Messi, Argentina will still be a force to be reckoned with. The USMNT at +3500 has long odds but a few things are working in their favor. The Americans will have home-field advantage for the first time since 1994.
