IIT Delhi Launches BTech in Design Programme for 2025: Check how to apply

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi will introduce a new four-year undergraduate programme titled BTech in Design starting from the academic year 2025–26. This programme will be offered by the Department of Design and is intended to provide students with a foundation in both technical knowledge and design thinking, with an emphasis on addressing socio-technical challenges. To be considered for admission into the BTech in Design programme at IIT Delhi, students must qualify both the JEE (Advanced) examination and the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). Candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance in both these national-level entrance tests. Clearing only one of the two will not make a student eligible for admission into the programme. Eligibility criteria Candidates applying for the programme must have completed their Class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination in either 2024 or 2025. The required subjects for eligibility include Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Additionally, for UCEED eligibility, applicants must be born on or after October 1, 2000. A five-year age relaxation is applicable for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories. These eligibility conditions are applicable as per existing norms of the respective entrance examinations. How to apply? The application process will be conducted online through the official IIT Delhi admissions portal. Applicants must ensure that they have valid scores in both JEE Advanced and UCEED before initiating the application. Once the application window opens, students will be required to register, provide their details, and indicate their interest in the BTech in Design programme. Important deadlines related to application submission, counselling, and seat allotment will be announced on the institute's website, and candidates are advised to monitor the site regularly to avoid missing any updates. Programme structure The BTech in Design programme is structured as a four-year degree course with a total credit requirement of 155. The programme will begin with an initial intake of 20 students. Approximately half of the coursework will be drawn from the core discipline of design, while the rest will include interdisciplinary courses offered by other departments, centres, and schools across the institute. The curriculum includes subjects in design frameworks, design prototyping, mechanics of solids and fluids, environmental science, research methods, communication and teamwork skills, design entrepreneurship, and exhibition design. The programme is designed to develop a foundation in systematic design thinking and problem-solving while also promoting hands-on skills and collaboration. The launch of this programme coincides with broader curriculum changes being implemented at IIT Delhi from the 2025–26 academic year across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Under the new structure, students will have greater freedom to choose elective courses across disciplines including science, engineering, humanities, and management. An Honours option will be available to BTech students, and those interested in continuing with postgraduate education may opt for an integrated BTech plus MTech programme at the end of the third year, allowing them to earn both degrees in five years. Additionally, first-year students will now engage more directly with their parent departments, and first-year class sizes will be reduced to enhance student-faculty interaction. There will also be a greater emphasis on experiential learning and ethical, environmental, and creative dimensions of education.
