India dig deep with bat to draw fourth Test against England
After losing two wickets before they had scored a run in their second innings, India batted for over five sessions for the loss of two more wickets to end the final day on 425-4 at Old Trafford.
A courageous hundred from Gill - his fourth of the series - and dogged unbeaten centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar gave the home crowd little to cheer on a tough day for England.
A closely-fought series remains at 2-1 to England and the hosts must avoid defeat in the final test at the Oval in London, starting on Thursday, to win it.
"This is no less than a win for us, given we were around 300 runs off the lead. Our batsman put on a great display," Gill told the BBC.
"As soon as England got the new ball, it was doing a little bit but our batters did really well and it was tremendous, with a little bit of luck going our way as some balls can get dragged on, brilliant batting and brave batting."
England captain Ben Stokes, who took five wickets in India's first innings but was not fit to bowl much on Saturday, brought himself into the attack on Sunday morning with India resuming on 174-2.
The hosts were firm favourites to seal victory at this point, even more so when Stokes' reintroduction paid dividends. The 34-year-old trapped KL Rahul lbw for 90, ending his excellent third-wicket partnership with Gill at 188.
Gill remained undeterred, however, even after getting a nasty blow on the hand. In his first series as captain, the 25-year-old became only the third skipper to score four hundreds in a single test series.
After almost seven hours at the crease, a tired-looking Gill wafted at a Jofra Archer delivery to fall just before lunch for 103. Jadeja was dropped the next ball by Joe Root, a tough chance at first slip.
England still had plenty of time to secure victory, but the home side barely created any chances, with India seeing out the draw in relative comfort.
Washington moved along conservatively after lunch, but hit successive boundaries, one a huge six, to move to his fifth test half century. Jadeja reached his fifty and passed 1,000 test runs against England - the third Indian to do so this series.
After tea, with their chance of victory gone, England offered India the chance to call a halt to proceedings early, but Gill kept his team out there.
With England rotating their bowlers, Jadeja swept to his fifth test ton under no pressure, before Washington quickly completed his maiden test hundred.
India did then agree to a draw - the first non-rain affected draw for England since coach Brendan McCullum and Stokes came together in 2022.
"Another hard-fought test," Stokes told reporters. "Another five-dayer. We set the game up really well, the way we put the Indian bowlers under pressure, focusing on batting once.
"We gave ourselves a great chance of bowling them out. We played the game how we wanted to, it didn't just pan out the way we wanted," Stokes added.
"Mentally I feel fine, physically I've been better. It has been a pretty big workload this series."

India have not ruled out Bumrah for the final Test, says Gambhir
India head coach Gautam Gambhir said they had not ruled out playing pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the final Test against England at the Oval this week as they look to avoid a series defeat. Bumrah has already played three Tests in the series, the maximum workload team management had targeted for the bowler after he spent three months on the sidelines with a back injury before returning to action in April. India snatched an unlikely draw in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday but trail the hosts 2-1 in the five-match series. "We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last Test," Gambhir said. "No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country." India captain Shubman Gill suggested it might be left up to Bumrah to make the call. "If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told the BBC. India went into the fourth Test with a depleted bowling attack having rested the injured pace duo of Akash Deep (groin) and Arshdeep Singh (hand). Bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy had already returned home after a knee injury cut short his tour. Anshul Kamboj made his Test debut in Manchester but Gambhir said they would have a full set of fit bowlers at their disposal for the Test at the Oval, which begins on Thursday. Manuel Ugarte excited for new season after tough start to Manchester United career
Manchester United's Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte had a chastening first term in the Premier League after his £42 million move from Paris Saint-Germain just after the 2024-25 season had started. He was hit and miss for a team which was more miss, yet he also adapted well to the world's toughest league in a difficult position, playing well in some games. Ugarte's attitude, work rate and determination were all reasons why he was signed for big money by Erik ten Hag. How his successor Ruben Amorim, who he thrived under at Sporting in Lisbon, views him is key. Ugarte, at 24, remains relatively young. He also played well against West Ham in Saturday's 2-1 pre-season friendly win in New Jersey. 'I think we did well today, we controlled most of the game and we won,' he told The National afterwards. 'We won, which was important, but we keep working, we have a lot to improve. We have more games to play, we are good. I think it is important to have humility. "We must work day in, day out. I think I did well. We played well in midfield, we controlled the ball, we had the ball, we scored, we recovered.' Amorim also spoke about Ugarte during his post-match press conference. 'The first thing is adaptation to a new team, a new country,' he said. 'Sometimes, you just look inside the pitch but, off the pitch, you can have some trouble sometimes. 'He is more adapted and then he needs more confidence, it's also my job. Two months on, he is happier and ready to go again in a huge season for him and his team. He is also confident of improving after a season of adjustment. 'Without a doubt,' he said. 'I know the rivals, I know the teammates. All of this is important. Sometimes the connections take time to get to know each other. I already know the league, the rivals, which is important. "So I'm very happy, but we must keep going. We must improve things. We are all very motivated, because we believe in the coach, we believe in what he wants and that is very important.' After United 's first pre-season friendly against Leeds United, Amorim said his team needed more speed in midfield. 'It was the first game of the pre-season,' said Ugarte. 'As time goes by, the intensity goes up. I think it is important to mark the rhythm of the game, the intensity.' He maintains that the atmosphere in the dressing room in Chicago, where United play Bournemouth on Wednesday, with the new players is 'very good" and that "all three players who came are very good, good people, good players. It is important that everyone is together in the dressing room and we must keep going'. Ugarte speaks daily to fellow midfielder Casemiro 'about everything, football less, but we talk about everything, life, day to day things'. He chats with Kobbie Mainoo too. 'We talk about younger things, compared to Casemiro, because Casemiro is older. But we all have a good relationship, there is a lot of optimism on the team," he said.
