about a new study on aging
Health editor Rachel Grumman Bender stopped by to talk about her team's reporting on a new study that looked into how people's lifestyles affect aging.
Jessica: This new study talks about 'aging bursts.' What does that mean?
Rachel: We already know that babies and children have growth spurts, while adults seem to age slowly and steadily over time. But my colleague Korin Miller reported on emerging research that suggests adults may have aging spurts too, during which unhealthy behaviors may be more likely to catch up with them.
Jessica: When do these aging bursts happen?
Rachel: The latest study found that unhealthy habits like smoking, heavy drinking and exercising less than once a week started to negatively affect people's mental and physical health at age 36. Another study pinpointed two more periods of rapid aging, around 44 and 60 years old.
Jessica: What should people take away from these studies?
Rachel: That it's never too late to start taking care of your health. Get enough sleep, move your body and cut back on alcohol and processed foods. Experts told Korin that strength training and getting enough fiber were two important ways to help slow down the aging process.

'He was a wonderful family man,' Anne Perricone, 77, exclusively tells PEOPLE of Carl, who died on June 2 at the age of 95. Anne said their journey began when he was a father of five and a widower at 27 after his first wife tragically died following rheumatic fever. They met when she lived across the street and cared for his children. 'I babysat the children and fell in love with the children and him,' Anne says. They would go on to marry, have a daughter, and remain committed to each other for 58 years. They would have celebrated their 59th anniversary in August, most likely partaking in a familiar pastime. 'Oh gosh. He always brought me out there, glass of wine to have an afternoon on the porch,' she says. Five years ago, Anne says she and Carl moved to their daughter's home, and the longtime couple 'enjoyed sitting out here watching the birds. He loved watching the birds. He has a bird feeder out there watching the birds and the animals.' His valor as a father and husband also extended to his service to his country alongside his brothers Anthony, Bernard, and Donald Perricone, affectionately known as the Alphabet Quads. They were born in Beaumont, Texas, on Halloween in 1929 to Maria Concetta "Bessie" Mazzu and Philip 'Filippo' Perricone. They were the first surviving male quadruplets in the world, according to the Museum of the Gulf Coast. Their births made headlines, and so did their decision to be drafted into the Army in 1950 during the Korean War. The mother of the quads contacted then-Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson with the insistence, ' 'You can't just take one of my boys. They've always been together,' ' Anna says. The brothers ultimately served in the same unit. 'He was proud of his service,' she says, continuing that he also served in the Air Force. Upon returning home in 1953, the brothers worked together at Pure Oil Refinery before Anthony decided to become a barber. Carl and his two brothers remained at the company until retirement, according to the museum. The quadruplets eventually bought a parcel of land in their hometown and dubbed the private road Quad Lane, where their descendants still live. In 2010, Carl represented himself, his brothers and his country at a ceremony in South Korea commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, per the museum. Despite his strong bond with his brothers, Carl did not always want to be associated with being part of the famed quad. 'They were so publicly displayed for so long. He got tired of all that. He did grant an interview probably about seven years ago after Donald died. Yeah, it's been longer than that, my daughter said. But anyway, we kind of just backed away from it,' she recalls, but he ultimately granted an interview with The Beaumont Enterprise in 2013. She continues, 'We all sat down with the people in the living room and he just told them about missing his brothers.' The news of his death led to an outpouring of condolences, but Anne says that he was 'very healthy,' and that 'no one could believe' he was 95. 'He would walk out here and go ride his lawnmower and cut grass and he was very healthy. But in the last few months, I guess I'd say he took a couple stumbles up here. Over the years, numerous Black hosts have made indelible marks on the industry, bringing unique perspectives and voices to the forefront. From groundbreaking daytime programs to late-night innovations, these hosts have not only entertained but also educated and inspired audiences worldwide with their groundbreaking talent, opening doors for future generations. Meet Hazel Scott, the first Black woman to host a TV show. Hazel Scott, a trailblazing jazz pianist and vocalist, is widely recognized by historians as the first Black woman to host her own national television program in the United States. According to Women's History, more than just a performer, Scott was a fearless advocate for civil rights, standing up against the Hollywood studio system and testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee during a time when doing so posed grave personal and professional risks. Her signature fusion of classical music with jazz rhythms captivated audiences across America and around the world. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1920, Scott moved to New York City in 1924 with her mother and grandmother following her parents' separation. She was the only child of R. Thomas Scott, a West African scholar, and Alma Long Scott, a classically trained pianist and accomplished saxophonist. Hazel's musical aptitude emerged early—by age three, she could play piano by ear, and she was known to vocally protest when her mother's students hit incorrect notes. Thanks to her mother's deep ties to the music world, Hazel was given a rare opportunity to audition for the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. She was accepted on a special waiver at the age of eight—a testament to her extraordinary talent. By her teenage years, Scott was already a fixture in New York's music scene. At 13, she joined her mother's band, Alma Long Scott's American Creolians. Two years later, she made her solo debut performing alongside Count Basie's orchestra at the Roseland Ballroom. Around the same time, she won a contest that earned her a spot on local radio and soon after made her Broadway debut in the 1938 revue ' Sing Out the News .' Despite her growing fame, Scott graduated from high school with honors. Her breakthrough came in 1939 during a residency at Café Society, a groundbreaking integrated nightclub in Greenwich Village known for showcasing progressive talent. When Billie Holiday abruptly ended her engagement there, she personally recommended Scott as her successor. Scott quickly became the club's star attraction and was affectionately dubbed the 'Darling of Café Society.' In 1950, Scott broke new ground once again with ' The Hazel Scott Show,' a 15-minute television program aired three times a week. It initially broadcast in New York and later expanded nationally. On the show, Scott performed her unique blend of jazz, blues, and classical music, earning critical acclaim and strong viewership. However, her rising stardom was cut short when she was named in ' Red Channels ,' a publication that accused entertainers of Communist affiliations. The show was swiftly canceled, despite her refusal to back down under pressure. Scott's legacy is not only defined by her musical genius but also by her incredible commitment to justice and artistic integrity in the face of adversity. She walked so many of our favorite Black talk and TV show hosts could run and thrive.
