‘How to Train Your Dragon' retains top spot at North American box office
The family-friendly film from Universal and DreamWorks Animation tells the story of a Viking named Hiccup (Mason Thames) who strikes up a friendship with Toothless the dragon.
Its US$37 million haul was enough to beat out Columbia Pictures' zombie sequel 28 Years Later, which took in US$30 million despite coming nearly two decades after the last release in the trilogy, 28 Weeks Later.
'(28 Years Later) is an excellent opening for the third episode in a horror series,' said analyst David Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
'The weekend figure is above average for the genre, and pending final numbers it's approximately three times the opening of the last episode.'
Critics' reviews and audience ratings have been strong for the Danny Boyle-directed threequel, which picks up – as the title suggests – more than a generation after the initial outbreak of the Rage Virus.

'The long layoff has had no negative impact; in fact, it's given the sequel time to add a new younger age group to the audience,' said Gross.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend was the poor performance of Pixar Animation's Elio, which limped into third place with only US$21 million in ticket sales, on a US$150 million budget.
Gross said that while the tally would be respectable for most animation studios, it was the lowliest theatrical debut in Pixar's history – despite excellent reviews.
Disney's Lilo & Stitch, another live-action remake, added US$9.7 million in its fifth week, extending a triumphant run for the film about a Hawaiian girl (Maia Kealoha) and her blue alien friend (voiced by Chris Sanders).
The fourth-placed entry has now grossed a whopping US$910 million worldwide, according to Exhibitor Relations.
In fifth place – and also in its fifth week – is Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, the latest, and supposedly final, entry in the hugely successful Tom Cruise spy thriller franchise. The Paramount film took US$6.6 million in North America, pushing it to US$540 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top 10 were: Materialists (US$5.8 million); Ballerina (US$4.5 million); Karate Kid: Legends (US$2.4 million); Final Destination: Bloodlines (US$1.9 million); and Kuberaa (US$1.8 million). AFP

World's biggest Legoland adds to China's amusement park glut
LEGOLAND'S Shanghai theme park opens this week as the world's biggest of its kind. But attracting the crowds that Disneyland did when it launched in 2016 will be an uphill battle for operator Merlin Entertainments in China's now frugal, crowded consumer market. While construction of the project began when Chinese tourism was on its rebound post-pandemic and theme park tickets were selling out during major holidays, amusement destinations are now raking in less cash. The recent three-day Dragon Boat Festival public holiday saw spending per trip go down 2.2 per cent on year to 359 yuan (S$63.70), though the data refers to all travel trips and not just theme parks. 'The number of visitors to major foreign theme parks in China remained flat or rose slightly in 2024, but their revenue from secondary consumption within the parks decreased,' said Lin Huanjie, director of market research organisation Institute for Theme Park Studies in China. Morgan Stanley estimates that the Shanghai Disneyland, the top performing theme park in the country, will see revenue decline from US$1.5 billion to US$1.4 billion this year, according to a research note. The new Legoland Shanghai Resort will officially open in July featuring eight theme parks with more than 75 interactive rides, shows and attractions. PHOTO: BLOOMBERG With theme parks no longer the novelty they once were and newer attractions set to open, the competition for visitors is set to grow fiercer. Sign Up Sign Up Warner Bros Discovery plans to open a Harry Potter studio tour in Shanghai in collaboration with Jinjiang International Group in 2027, while Asia's first Peppa Pig outdoor theme park is expected to open its doors also in Shanghai the same year. Meanwhile, construction of the Shenzhen Legoland Resort is progressing with no official completion date. While tourists have continued to visit parks based on foreign intellectual property, such as Disney and Universal Studios, domestic attractions have taken a knock. The number of visitors to large theme parks in China declined in 2024 compared to a year earlier due to economic pressures and volatile weather, according to a report from the institute. Almost a quarter of large theme parks lost money. Vivian Lian, a theme-park loving housewife from Shanghai, said she will go to the new Legoland only if she can lay her hands on discounted tickets. Among those who feel the pinch of China's slowing economy, she has set strict limits on what she and her daughter can spend on visits to theme parks — a minimal amount on food is fine, while buying souvenirs is out of the question. Visitors ride a carousel during a media preview at the new Legoland theme park in Shanghai. PHOTO: EPA-EFE 'The attendance in China is still quite good. It's just per capita spending isn't quite as high.' Hugh Johnston, chief financial officer at Walt Disney, said during an earnings call in May. 'Consumers are tightening their belts a little bit in that particular market.' In recent years, Disney launched two land themed attractions – Frozen and Zootopia – with an eye on the surging domestic travel demand. Disneyland opened in 2016, with the California-based entertainment company owning 43 per cent of the project and the rest held by state-owned consortium Shanghai Shendi Group. Ripple effects For local governments and business partners, the main appeal of investing in theme parks lies in the knock-on effects, such as the boost to business activity and property prices. According to Lin's calculations, every 1 yuan of revenue can generate 12-15 yuan income of relative industry such as hotel, restaurant, transportation in first-tier cities or provincial capitals. However, the incentive for local governments to open large theme parks is generating concerns about oversupply. Although theme parks do not release their operation data, Lin noted that the revenue of theme parks in China decreased by an average of 15 to 20 per cent, compared with 71.84 per cent on-year growth in 2023. Visionland in Liuzhou, Guangxi Province suspended operations in 2024 after seven years. The approval for new large theme parks has been tightened at the national level, Lin said. Faced with more cost-conscious customers, theme parks are offering promotions to get people through the gates, such as cheaper tickets or discounts on food. For Jessica Zhang, a Shanghai-based insurance broker who drove nearly two hours to Legoland with her daughter and husband in early June before its official opening, the experience was enjoyable and she is considering returning. Still, 'it would be better if the tickets were cheaper,' she said. BLOOMBERG

Sean ‘Diddy' Combs convicted on prostitution counts, but cleared of more serious charges
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Prosecutors say Sean 'Diddy' Combs was found guilty after a criminal trial in which two former girlfriends testified that he physically and sexually abused them. NEW YORK - Sean 'Diddy' Combs was found guilty on July 2 of prostitution-related offences, but cleared of more serious charges after a criminal trial in which two of the music mogul's former girlfriends testified that he physically and sexually abused them. Combs was convicted of transportation to engage in prostitution but acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and two counts of sex trafficking, a partial win for the former billionaire known for elevating hip-hop in American culture. Prosecutors say Combs for two decades used his business empire to force two of his romantic partners to take part in drug-fuelled, days-long sexual performances sometimes known as 'Freak Offs' with male sex workers in hotel rooms while Combs watched, masturbated and occasionally filmed. During raids of Combs' homes, authorities found drugs and 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant that he would use in the performances, prosecutors said. Combs, 55, had pleaded not guilty to all five counts. His lawyers acknowledged that the Bad Boy Records founder, once famed for hosting lavish parties for the cultural elite in luxurious locales like the Hamptons and Saint-Tropez, was at times violent in his domestic relationships. But they said the sexual activity described by prosecutors was consensual. The seven-week trial in Manhattan federal court exposed the inner workings of Combs' business empire and gave the 12-member jury an intimate look into his volatile romantic relationships with the rhythm and blues singer Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura and a woman known in court by the pseudonym Jane. Ms Ventura sued Combs in November 2023 for sex trafficking, the first of dozens of civil lawsuits accusing him of abuse. Combs, also known throughout his career as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy and once feted for turning artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars, settled with Ms Ventura for US$20 million (S$25 million). He has denied all wrongdoing. At the trial, jurors saw surveillance footage from 2016 showing Combs kicking and dragging Ms Ventura in the hallway of an InterContinental hotel in Los Angeles, where she said she was trying to leave a 'Freak Off'. Jane later testified that Combs in June 2024 attacked her and directed her to perform oral sex on a male entertainer, even though she told him she did not want to. That alleged attack took place a month after Combs apologised on social media for his 2016 attack of Ms Ventura, footage of which had been broadcast on CNN. According to prosecutors, physical violence was just one way Combs compelled Ms Ventura and Jane to take part in the performances - an act of coercion they say amounts to sex trafficking because the male escorts were paid. Both women testified that he threatened to withhold financial support and to leak sexually explicit images of them if they refused to comply. 'The defendant used power, violence and fear to get what he wanted,' prosecutor Christy Slavik said in her closing argument on June 26. 'He doesn't take no for an answer.' Combs' defence lawyers argued that while Combs may have committed domestic violence in the context of volatile romantic partnerships, his conduct did not amount to sex trafficking. They argued that Ms Ventura and Jane were strong, independent women who voluntarily took part in the sexual performances because they wanted to please Combs. Both women testified they spent time with Combs and took part in sexual performances after he beat them. Defence lawyers argued that Ms Ventura and Jane were retrospectively accusing Combs of forcing their participation in the performances because they were jealous he was seeing other women. 'If he was charged with domestic violence, we wouldn't all be here,' Combs' defence lawyer Marc Agnifilo said in his closing argument on June 27. 'He did not do the things he's charged with.' Racketeering conspiracy Besides Ms Ventura and Jane, jurors also heard testimony from Combs' former personal assistants who said their jobs included setting up hotel rooms for 'Freak Offs' and buying their boss drugs. An InterContinental security guard testified that Combs, in the presence of his chief of staff, paid him US$100,000 to hand over what he thought was the only copy of the surveillance tape of his attack on Ms Ventura. And Mr Scott Mescudi, the rapper known as Kid Cudi, told jurors Combs was likely involved in an arson on his car after Combs found out he was romantically involved with Ms Ventura. According to prosecutors, those were all acts Combs and his associates undertook in furtherance of a racketeering conspiracy whose aim was, in part, to facilitate his abuse and keep evidence of his wrongdoing under wraps. The defence argued Combs was a successful entrepreneur who used drugs recreationally, but kept his professional and personal lives separate. Combs has been held in federal lockup in Brooklyn since his September 2024 arrest. REUTERS

New ‘Squid Game' season breaks Netflix records
[SEOUL] The third season of Netflix's blockbuster series Squid Game racked up record viewership in its first three days, reinforcing the South Korean survival drama's status as a global cultural phenomenon. The final season of the dystopian thriller logged more than 60 million views in its first three days – the biggest debut in that time frame – and ranked No 1 across all 93 countries with top 10 rankings, according to Netflix. That compares with the debut of the previous season, which drew 68 million views in the first four days. The runaway success of Squid Game highlights the enduring international appeal of Korean storytelling and Netflix's pivotal role in amplifying it. The series reflects deep-seated social anxieties while spotlighting South Korea's creative firepower. For Netflix, which has invested billions of US dollars into Korean content, the challenge now is sustaining momentum with a pipeline strong enough to command global attention. Originally released in 2021, Squid Game was an instant hit and a cornerstone of Netflix's local-for-local strategy. The series remains Netflix's most-watched title of all time, amassing approximately 600 million views across its first two seasons to date. 'Squid Game really must have been the first real Korean drama for a lot of people outside Korea to watch,' said Don Kang, vice-president of Netflix's Korean content. 'Ever since then, 80 per cent of Netflix members have watched Korean content and many of them still continue to do so.' Sign Up Sign Up Despite receiving mixed reviews for the third season, the show generated significant international buzz on social media following its debut on Friday (Jun 27). An American adaptation of Squid Game is reportedly in the works, directed by filmmaker David Fincher. Netflix has not officially confirmed any spinoff or sequels of Squid Game. A massive parade was held in central Seoul on Saturday evening to celebrate the launch of the final season and as part of the Korean government's push to position the city as a cultural hub and global tourism destination. 'We want to be the place where creators come to us with stories that no one else will tell at a scale that has not been possible before,' Kang said. 'If we keep doing that, I think the next Squid Game will come.' Netflix's Korea team has also transformed its variety shows into global sensations with hits like Physical: 100 and Culinary Class Wars. Both shows are set to return later this year and are currently in discussions for potential international adaptations, according to Kang. In an increasingly crowded streaming market, Netflix has partnered with South Korea's Naver, to attract a new segment of users. Naver, which owns the New York-listed Webtoon Entertainment platform, brings added value to the collaboration, though the partnership is still in its early stages. Kang also said live streaming and sports content are being considered as part of Netflix's broader Korean strategy to boost global user engagement. BLOOMBERG
