Afghan national with LOC from Kolkata held at Bhubaneswar airport with fake passport
Bhubaneswar: A 54-year-old Afghan national, against whom a look out circular (LOC) had been issued by Kolkata airport authorities, was arrested on Sunday at Odisha's Biju Patnaik International Airport with fake documents, including an Indian passport, police said. The police said that Yousaf had illegally entered India in 2018 with a false Indian identity and secured official documents through forged means (Sourced)
The accused, Mohammad Yousaf, was intercepted during a routine immigration clearance at Biju Patnaik airport in Bhubaneswar on Saturday evening, shortly after he arrived from Dubai on an IndiGo flight.
A police officer said that airport police authorities arrested Yousaf following a complaint by deputy superintendent of police (immigration) Samapika Pattnaik. 'His team during a routine immigration clearance of Flight No. 6E-1488 arriving from Dubai spotted him with the counterfeit Indian passport ,' he said.
Around ₹ 80,000 in cash, a smartphone, two gold earrings, a motorcycle registration certificate, and bank documents in the forged name were seized from his possession, the officer said.
The police said that Yousaf had illegally entered India in 2018 with a false Indian identity and secured official documents through forged means. He had been residing in Peyton Sahi, Buxi Bazar area of Cuttack and operating under the alias Yaha Khan.
The immigration team, while conducting a thorough background check, also found a Look Out Circular (LOC) issued against him by Kolkata airport authorities, the officer added.
'Yousaf confessed to his real identity during interrogation and admitted to fabricating multiple official documents such as Aadhaar, PAN card, voter ID, and driving license apart from the fake Indian passport. He used the forged documents to travel, conduct business, and open bank accounts across states,' the officer said.
Yousaf was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is underway to uncover any wider network and potential national security implications.

He clarified that no Adani Group member faces charges under the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) or for conspiracy to obstruct justice. "Even in the face of the storms and relentless scrutiny, the Adani Group has never backed down. Instead, we proved that true leadership is not built in sunshine. It is constructed in the fire of crisis," he said according to a PTI report. "This was tested again last year, when we faced allegations from the US Department of Justice and the SEC relating to Adani Green Energy." Amidst the controversy, he emphasized that "the facts are that no one from the Adani Group has been charged with violating the FCPA or conspiring to obstruct justice." He further stated, "We live in a world where negativity often echoes louder than the truth. And as we cooperate with legal processes, let me also restate that our governance is of global standards, and our compliance frameworks are non-negotiable." In January 2023, Hindenburg Research , a US short-seller, released a critical report labelling the Adani Group as "the largest con in corporate history". The consequences were immediate, with share prices falling sharply, resulting in a market value loss exceeding $ 150 billion at its lowest point, and leading to the cancellation of the group's largest public offering. The group had begun recovering through debt reduction, decreasing founder's pledged shares, securing investments from both promoters and notable investors, and concentrating on core operations. However, this progress was interrupted when US authorities alleged that Adani and his associates had made improper payments to obtain Indian power supply contracts and provided misleading information to US investors during fundraising activities. The Adani group has consistently rejected all wrongdoing accusations. The organisation continued its business focus, which led to substantial recovery in most of its stock values and achievement of record-breaking earnings. Regarding consolidated figures, the group achieved 7% revenue growth, 8.2% EBITDA growth, maintaining a healthy net debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 2.6x. The total revenues reached Rs 2,71,664 crore with adjusted EBITDA of Rs 89,806 crore. The conglomerate projects substantial capital investments across its operations. "And in this context, our capital investment across businesses is set to break all records. We anticipate an annual capex spend of $ 15-20 billion for the next 5 years. These are not just investments in our group, but investments in the possibilities for doing our part to build India's infrastructure." Regarding operational achievements, the power generation division, Adani Power, exceeded 100 billion units of generation and aims to achieve 31 GW capacity by 2030. The sustainable energy division, Adani Green, is constructing India's largest renewable energy facility at Khavda in Gujarat, targeting 50 GW by 2030. The combined thermal, renewable and pumped hydro generation facilities are expected to reach 100 GW capacity by 2030. Adani Energy Solutions, the electricity transmission division, managed smart metering and high-voltage connections, securing transmission orders worth Rs 44,000 crore whilst implementing smart metering projects valued at Rs 13,600 crore. The clean energy division, Adani New Industries, is developing electrolysers and manufacturing facilities to produce 10 GW of solar modules in the upcoming financial year. Adani Ports achieved a milestone by handling 450 million tonnes of cargo, whilst the group's natural resources division produced 47 million tonnes of coal and iron ore, projecting over 30 per cent growth by FY26. "Two and a half years ago, when we acquired Holcim's India cement business, we had made a bold commitment -- to double our capacity to 140 million tonnes per annum by FY27-28. "But perhaps our most transformative project is unfolding in Dharavi -- Asia's largest slum, now being reimagined as India's most ambitious urban rehabilitation project," he said. "Over 1 million people will move from narrow lanes to a township that will feature spacious layouts, dual toilets, open spaces, schools, hospitals, transit hubs and parks." J&K High Court orders government to bring back woman deported to Pakistan
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has ordered the Union government to bring back a 63-year-old woman to India on humanitarian grounds after she was deported to Pakistan during a crackdown on Pakistani citizens following the Pahalgam terror attack. The order was passed on June 6. Rakshanda Rashid, the petitioner, had lived in Jammu on a long-term visa for 38 years with her husband, a retired government official, and two children, The Hindu reported. She was detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and taken to the Attari-Wagah border checkpoint, from where she was deported to Pakistan on April 30. Since being deported, Rashid has been living at a hotel in Lahore, her daughter Falak Sheikh told The Hindu. Rashid has no relatives in Pakistan and may soon run out of the cash she had taken from India, her daughter said. Sheikh told the newspaper that her mother had applied for Indian citizenship in 1996 but the application had not been processed. The petitioner's husband Sheikh Zahoor Ahmed said that Rashid had no one in Pakistan who could take care of his wife, who was suffering from several ailments. According to the court order, Ahmed said that Rashid's 'health and life is at risk with each passing day and [she had been] left to fend for herself as abandoned'. Judge Rahul Bharti said in the order that human rights were the 'most sacrosanct component of a human life' and, therefore, 'there are occasions when a constitutional court is supposed to come up with SOS-like indulgence notwithstanding the merits and demerits of a case…' The merits of the case can be adjudicated separately, the judge said. Given the 'exceptional nature of facts and circumstances' of the case, the court ordered the Union home secretary to comply with the order within 10 days. The petitioner's counsel Ankur Sharma told The Hindu that the authorities had not acted on the order so far and Rashid had not yet returned to India. The bench will hear the matter next on July 1, when the government is to file a compliance report. The terror attack at Baisaran near the town of Pahalgam on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 16 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. Among several diplomatic measures, New Delhi had on April 24 announced that the visas of Pakistani citizens in India would stand revoked from April 27 and that they had to leave the country before the deadline. Following the deadline, the police in many states had deported several Pakistani citizens who remained in the country.

Adani says no one from group charged with US FCPA violation

In November, US authorities indicted Adani and several executives, alleging they paid bribes to secure Indian power contracts and misled US investors. The Adani Group has rejected the allegations as "baseless" and said it was cooperating with legal processes. Adani Group and its 13 offshore investors have been facing an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) since Hindenburg Research in 2023 alleged the group's improper use of tax havens. The group has consistently denied any wrongdoing. The company, which is constructing the world's largest renewable energy park in Khavda, western India, aims to install 50 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity by 2030. With combined thermal, renewable and pumped hydro assets, Adani Group expects to reach a total power generation capacity of 100 gigawatts by 2030, Adani said. Adani also announced a record capital expenditure plan, saying the group expects to invest between $15 billion and $20 billion annually over the next five years.
