Would AI take jobs?
That has been the question that pondered many minds. But AI can find you jobs. That's what I found at the exhibition at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, which is part of the Oman AI Summit.
The AI system that supports recruitment and can even do a personality analysis while a video interview is being conducted. So today individuals who are scanning the job market for an opening must prepare themselves in communication and non-communication skills. It is not just a written resume that matters.
A potential company can ask as many questions as needed, and they will feed in the model answers, explained the representative from Elevatus. The AI will compare the given answer by the candidate with the model answer given by the company and grade accordingly. The personality report, on the other hand, grades on openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability. In fact, there is lot more because just under general function comes intuition, patience, flexibility, outcome orientation, analytical thinking, active listening, working underpressure, results orientation, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, compliance, communication, teamwork, resourcefulness, discipline, budgeting, work ethic, delegation, dependability, decision making, time management and the list goes on.
There are more than 1,800 psychometric assessments to assess top talent. The AI can screen 10,000 resumes instantly, at the same time job boards are integrated. No one can be perfect, but with the right attitude, organisations might be willing to provide the training.
According to Opendatasoft, "Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. Essentially it involves computer programs to reason on the same model as a human brain, by focusing on three cognitive skills - reasoning, learning, and self-correction."
So where does it leave human intelligence? The eight types of intelligence described by Howard Gardner include musical-rhythmic, visual-spatial, verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. Of course this can expand further.
Emotional intelligence is gaining importance more than ever before. We can imagine how much emotions influence decision-making. With artificial intelligence, emotions will be very much under control. But we all know the world needs a lot more empathy as well as acceptance and understanding.
What will matter is who will write the model answer.
As generations evolve, it might be easier to adapt to the transformative process. There is one aspect that will be a permanent feature, and that is continuous learning and upskilling.
At the Oman AI Summit, I came across faculty and students from a vocational training college in Saudi Arabia. Students were eager to volunteer and participate. They wanted to learn more. They said the whole experience was different. At the same time they were enchanted with Oman and wanted to experience more. They had two questions for the writer: Which is the best place to have dinner, and where can we buy gifts from Oman? Cannot mention the first answer because it would be promotional, and the second answer you would know - my all-time favourite place, Muttrah Souq.
These students too, by the time they are ready to graduate, could be answering questions that could be analyzed by AI using psychometric measures. It won't be long before guides come up teaching us the ideal answers in line with the potential model answers.
But the beauty of the human mind is its feelings and emotions. We are definitely going through an interesting period. It is not just a generation gap. It is a continuous evolution moving from voice to text to data and so much more.
This is an era where your search engine knows what you need to read and your social media prompts whom you might want to follow.
An era where data rules.

India is pillar of certainty for Europe in increasingly uncertain world: EU chief Ursula von der Leyen

New Delhi: Highlighting the need to bolster cooperation between new Delhi and Brussels in the areas of digital technology, Artificial Intelligence and defence, EU President Ursula von der Leyen termed India as a "pillar of certainty" for Europe in an "increasingly uncertain world". She lauded Prime Minister Modi's address at the Paris AI Summit earlier this month, and said that today, Europe and India are working together to shape a future in which AI is a driver of positive change in our economies and societies. The EU chief also affirmed her belief that the next AI Summit hosted by India will turn out a huge success. During the joint address with PM Modi on Friday, Ursula said, "At the Paris AI Summit, you (PM Modi) said that AI is writing the code of humanity; you are so right. I am convinced that Europe and India working together can shape a future in which AI is a driver of positive change in our economies and societies." "I am glad to note that AI is a major focus of the Trade and Technology Council. The European AI Office and India AI Mission also agreed to deepen cooperation. And we will apply AI in the areas of natural hazards, climate change and bioinformatics. AI should be at the heart of our Strategic Agenda. The next AI Summit hosted by you, Prime Minister, will take us forward. You can count on the European Union that this Summit is going to be a big success," she added. A large delegation of the European Commission held talks with Indian officials in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen at the Hyderabad House in the national capital. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and other ministers were present during the meeting. Ursula further said that India and the EU are aiming at the interoperability of the two digital public infrastructures, which are the "world's largest and most advanced." "India's Aadhaar and the EU digital wallet aim to offer public and private services to nearly 2 billion citizens. The interoperability of our digital identities will strengthen ties between the EU and India even more. Our digital cooperation also has an ambitious industrial agenda. We are committed to strengthening cooperation in semiconductor R&D and manufacturing. We are cooperating in the future of secure telecommunication networks. In particular, our industrial associations have agreed to cooperate closely on 6G," she said. The European Commission President is on a two-day bilateral visit to India, accompanied by members of the European College of Commissioners. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel received Ursula von der Leyen at the airport. This is Ursula von der Leyen's third visit to India. She previously visited India for a bilateral official visit in April 2022 and to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit in September 2023. The EU chief also stressed the need for digital skills, while adding that India can help in closing the gap in Europe's competitiveness. "Of course, technology is only as good as the people who can use it. That is why digital skills are so important. This is a topic very close to my heart. People are essential for Europe's competitiveness. Yet, we face a gap. India can help to close it. Let us increase student and skilled worker exchanges. Let us share expertise, talent and experience," Ursula said. She emphasised deeper cooperation in the areas of security and defence and pointed the need to step up cooperation on land, sea and space. Ursula also asserted that for Europe, India is a pillar of certainty in an increasingly uncertain world. The EU Chief also highlighted the importance of the Indian Ocean as a "lifeline" for global trade and said that ensuring its security is vital, not just for India but for the whole world/ "The third avenue I see is deeper cooperation in security and defence. For Europe, India is a pillar of certainty in an increasingly uncertain world. We know that authoritarian states are getting bolder, ignoring borders and threatening peace at sea. Now is the time to step up our security and defence cooperation on land, at sea and in space. Cybersecurity has never been so crucial. Our Cyber dialogue offers a platform for effective cooperation and information exchanges. Because threats are evolving and becoming more sophisticated by the day. Maritime security is just as essential," she said. "The Indian Ocean is a lifeline for global trade. Ensuring its security is vital, not just for India but for the whole world. We should also explore expanding our joint naval exercises, building on our very successful operations in the Gulf of Guinea and the Red Sea. Finally, we should deepen cooperation in protecting the cables that ensure data connectivity between India and the European Union. On defence, we see avenues for cooperation. India is looking into diversifying its military supply and access to new capabilities, and so is Europe. So, both India and the European Union can be partners on this topic," the EU chief added. While concluding her remarks, Ursula said that they are returning to Europe with fresh ideas for the future of India- Europe cooperation, adding that together, they send a "powerful and positive signal" to the world. "Prime Minister, Ministers, Commissioners, we are going back to Europe with fresh ideas for the future of our cooperation and the Summit later this year. India and the EU are together greater than the sum of our parts. Together, we send a powerful and positive signal to the world. The planets are aligned – and so are Europe and India," she concluded.

"Don't think he is a happy person...": Sam Altman takes dig at Elon Musk over OpenAI bid

Washington DC: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday took a jab at Elon Musk, who reportedly offered to buy the artificial intelligence startup's assets for $97.4 billion, accusing the Tesla CEO of acting from a "position of insecurity." "Probably his whole life is from a position of insecurity," Altman said during an interview with Bloomberg Television on the sidelines of the Paris AI Summit. "I feel for the guy. I don't think he's a happy person," he added in comments cited by multiple US publications, including the New York Post and the Hill. According to the New York Post, Altman reiterated that OpenAI is "not for sale" after Musk and a group of investors made an unsolicited offer. "The company is not for sale. It's another one of his tactics to try to mess with us," he said. When asked what Musk wants out of the deal during the Bloomberg Television interview, OpenAI CEO said, "He's probably just trying to slow us down." On Monday, The New York Times reported that a group of investors led by Musk made a USD 97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI's assets. In response, Altman took a jibe at the offer on X, saying, "No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want." Musk responded by calling Altman a "swindler." According to the New York Post, Musk's attorney Marc Toberoff said that Musk had secured backing from several prominent investors, including venture firms such as Joe Lonsdale's 8VC, Valor Equity Partners, Baron Capital, Atreides Management, and Vy Capital, as well as Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel. In a statement, Musk said it was "time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was," the publication reported. The Wall Street Journal first reported news of the offer. Meanwhile, The New York Times, citing a source familiar with OpenAI's response, reported that the company has not yet reviewed Musk's bid. This unsolicited offer could potentially disrupt OpenAI's efforts to finalise a USD 40 billion funding deal, which would significantly increase the company's valuation from just four months ago. The new funding round, led by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, is expected to value OpenAI at USD 300 billion, according to three sources familiar with the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity. If completed, this deal would place OpenAI among the most valuable private companies globally, alongside Musk's SpaceX and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, according to The New York Times.
