Annual Jackfruit Festival to take place on May 3 and 4

The Jackfruit Festival, which is conducted every year, will be held in the city on May 3 and 4 and feature many varieties of the fruit from different parts of the State and the country.
Organised by Sahja Samrudha, in collaboration with Amul Organic and Rich Plus, the festival will be held at the Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry. The organisers said that the event promises to be an enriching experience for producers, consumers, and enthusiasts alike.
Krishnaprasad of Sahaja Samrudha said that jackfruit was one of the most nutritious and versatile fruits, and the fourth-largest fruit crop in the country in terms of production. He said it is known for its rich medicinal and nutraceutical properties, and experts vouch for the rich vitamin and mineral content apart from the dietary fibre in the fruit.
However, there was a perception that despite its benefits, jackfruit remains an underutilised and neglected crop. In this backdrop, the Jackfruit Festival is being conducted not only to promote its commercial potential for farmers, but also in a bid to preserve the diversity of the fruit.
To showcase its diversity, the organisers will exhibit and sell red and white-fleshed jackfruit in addition to the yellow-fleshed fruit, which is known to consumers.
There will also be 'Jackfruit Food Bazaar', which will highlight various innovative and value-added products like jackfruit ice cream, jams, squashes, papads, halwa, kababs, holige, and dosa. In addition, there will be cooking demonstrations to showcase the versatility of the fruit in traditional and modern recipes, according to the organisers.
Seedlings of 25 unique jackfruit varieties, including Rudrakshi Halasu, Siddu, Shankara, Tubagere Halasu, Vietnam Super Early, and Chandra Halasu, the rare red jackfruits from Karnataka, will also be on sale.
Farmers from H.D. Kote, Periyapatna, Kollegal, Srirangapatna, Tiptur, Chikkanayakanahalli, and Haveri will bring jackfruits cultivated in their farms along with value-added products.
There will also be a jackfruit eating competition on May 4 at 2 p.m., and jackfruit lifting and weight-guessing competitions will be held.
A drawing competition for children and adults on May 3 at 2 p.m. and a training session on May 3 with experts guiding farmers on seed selection, planting techniques, care, and harvesting are other events to be held as part of the festival.
The festival will be inaugurated by Krishnamurthy Beligere, a poet and organic farmer. Karunakaran, principal scientist and head of the Central Horticultural Experimental Station, Manjunath Angadi, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department, Rangarajan T.N. from Amul Organic and Rich Plus, and others will be present.

Llantilio Pertholey Community Council received an application for the removal of existing extensions to Woodsview Cottage. The new proposal from Liz and Neil Davidson includes constructing a two-storey gable extension to the side and rear of the cottage, and a single-storey extension to the side. Application to change existing planning permission in Llangovan In Llangovan, an application has been submitted to change existing planning permission for Old Trecastle Farm. Mr and Mrs Ramage are seeking permission to convert the property to include ancillary guest accommodation and a glass house. The farm, located on Trecastle Road, previously received planning permission in 2009. Catherine Roberts of CRSH architecture and energy has been appointed for this project. The application was registered as valid on May 22. Amendments proposed at Tredunnock home In Tredunnock, Nick and Jayne Bellew have submitted an application for a non-material amendment to High Winds. The amendments include an additional gable to the northwest-facing elevation, corner glazing to the northeast and southeast-facing elevations in lieu of a balcony and windows, and an external chimney stack to the northeast-facing elevation. UK's oldest white-tailed eagle dies aged 32

The eagle, a female named Frisa, hatched on Mull in 1992 and paired up with her long-term mate Skye in 1997. The pair raised their first chick on the island in 1998, and went on to raise a total of 25 chicks in their 28 years of partnership. Frisa was known to 'millions' thanks to appearances in a number of BBC programmes over the last two decades, beginning with the very first episode of Springwatch in 2005. Her death was announced on the latest episode of the programme on June 2. RSPB ambassador Dave Sexton, who spent 21 of his 36-year RSPB career working with white-tailed eagles on Mull, described Frisa as 'a very special bird who had touched the hearts of millions who saw her both on TV and in the wild'. He added: 'As Frisa got on in years, I dreaded the day I would visit her territory and find her gone. 'Sadly, that day has come and I feel like I've lost a friend. 'But what a wonderful life she had with her mate Skye. Together they raised 25 chicks, many of which are now breeding far and wide across Scotland. 'She was a true icon for white-tailed eagles and she'll always hold a special place in my heart.' RSPB Scotland said Frisa has not been seen since last year, leading experts to believe she has died either of natural causes, or following an altercation with another eagle. At 31 years of age, Skye now takes on the mantle as the UK's oldest wild white-tailed eagle. Frisa's mother Blondie successfully raised the very first white-tailed eagle to fledge in Scotland following the reintroduction of the species in 1975. The species previously became extinct in the UK in 1918 when the last known native wild bird was shot in Shetland. A reintroduction project on the Isle of Rum using chicks donated from Norway has since seen the species re-establish a self-sustaining population in Scotland. There are now estimated to be up to 200 pairs of white-tailed eagles in the UK.
