Gurgaon environmentalist moves NGT over alleged encroachment, illegal constructions by temple trust in Sector 54
The matter, which will next be heard on October 29, deals with alleged illegal constructions and encroachment by the Kholi-waale Baba Temple Trust at Haiderpur Viran, behind Suncity.
The applicant, Vaishali Rana, Trustee, Aravallis Bachao, moved the Principal Bench of the NGT at New Delhi claiming that the encroachments not only threaten fragile ecological zones but also contravene legal mandates restricting any non-forest activities on notified forest land.
She has sought the removal of encroachments attributed to the temple trust, restoration of the demarcated forest area to its original state, and a direction to the relevant authorities to ensure that no further encroachment or construction is permitted at the site. The petition also asks for directions for periodic monitoring and enforcement to prevent recurrence.
'The illegal constructions, borewells, road laying, and concretisation of natural features within the Aravalli forest area are in blatant violation of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Punjab Land Preservation Act, 1900 … encroachment on Protected Forest Land like expansion of the temple complex, cemented parking, metal sheds, and reconstruction of the road amount to illegal encroachment on protected forest land, which is impermissible under applicable forest and land preservation statutes,' the petitioner pointed out.
The destruction of natural drainage and groundwater recharge systems due to the complete concretisation of a natural stormwater creek has also been flagged.
Further, the petitioner has sought that the approximately 250-300 cattle, currently housed in the allegedly illegally constructed gaushala (cowshed) within the forest area by the Temple Trust, be safely relocated and rehabilitated to a lawful and appropriate facility.
In an earlier petition filed before the NGT, Rana had highlighted the disappearance of ponds and water bodies at the Gwal Pahari and Badshahpur tehsils of Gurgaon.

These legislative changes have cleared the legal hurdles that had halted bullock cart races for years. On Monday, MLA Jiwan Singh Sangowal and Baltej Pannu, chief spokesperson of the Nasha Mukti Morcha, visited the venue to review preparations. They described the upcoming event as a celebration of Punjab's cultural roots and expressed gratitude to chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for restoring the pride of traditional rural sports. 'This is a historic moment for Punjab. The CM has not only revived a cherished tradition but also shown his connection with the people and culture of the state,' said Pannu, adding that Mann will also hold an interaction with participants and enthusiasts of bullock cart racing during the event. The district administration, under the supervision of senior officials, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure smooth conduct of the event. Thousands are expected to attend the event, which will feature races, traditional performances, and cultural displays. The Punjab Vidhan Sabha had passed the amendment bill earlier this year, after which President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on February 27. With this, Punjab joined a select list of states that have legislated for the revival of such traditional sports under regulated conditions. With the return of bullock cart racing, the state aims to strike a balance between tradition and regulation, giving rural youth an opportunity to reconnect with their roots while ensuring animal welfare norms are strictly followed.

2020 Delhi riots ‘larger conspiracy' case: Tasleem Ahmed granted interim bail for 15 days
A Delhi court Monday granted 15 days' interim bail to Tasleem Ahmed, an accused in the 'larger conspiracy' case linked to the 2020 Northeast Delhi Riots. Ahmed had sought interim bail on the grounds that his daughter is suffering from Typhoid and Hepatitis, and said he needs to arrange money for his son's school fee. According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, which was investigating the terror case, Ahmed allegedly gathered local women at the Jafrabad Metro Station, and blocked the road there, following which violence started in Northeast Delhi. During the investigation, Ahmed's name cropped up as one of the conspirators in this case. Protected witnesses disclosed his name in their statements. After terror charges were added in the case, the Special Cell booked 18 people under relevant provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Twelve of the 18 arrested are still in judicial custody, and the case is at the stage of arguments on the charge. On March 6, 2020, the Delhi Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the case. Five charge sheets were filed in this case between September 16, 2020, and June 7, 2023. According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, the accused orchestrated a 'larger conspiracy' which eventually led to the violence, leading to the riots. As many as 53 people were killed and 700 injured in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. The Special Cell claimed the riots were the result of a months-long 'deep-rooted' conspiracy allegedly hatched after the Citizenship Amendment Bill got a nod from the Union Cabinet in December 2019. The 'conspiracy' here was the creation of 23 protest sites (which operated 24*7) in 'Muslim majority areas' close to mosques and main roads. As per the Special Cell, the accused wanted to 'escalate' the protest to a road blockade, once critical mass is generated, when the then-US President Donald Trump visited Delhi in 2020.

'What is India's foreign policy without J&K at its heart? Decades of conflict have brought only suffering . Wars end, only to be replaced by new ones. Pakistan has invested in war machinery and India once revered as the 'hathi' for its strength and wisdom, has shackled J&K with a heavy-handed approach.' Giving an example of China, the former J&K chief minister said that China's GDP shows us where India stands today. 'These are not my words but a reflection of our misplaced priorities,' she said while quoting India's external affairs minister. Mufti said that our country grapples with poverty. 'Many schools lack basic facilities like toilets and clean drinking water, yet we prioritise buying weapons and deploying more CRPF companies. How much security is enough? Militarisation cannot heal wounds. Until the Centre embraces the people of Jammu and Kashmir with empathy and addresses their genuine aspirations, no progress will be made.' PDP president in an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.'PM Modi with the mandate of 120 crore people, you have the power to rewrite the story of J&K. If India is to surpass nations like China, it must end this war-like system and take concrete steps toward reconciliation. Restore the trust of the people by engaging in a process that respects their dignity and rights.' She however criticised the Centre's approach to governance in the region and said the revocation of Article 370 has not brought peace or prosperity but has deepened alienation. 'The people of J&K are not enemies; they are citizens seeking justice and inclusion. The Centre must stop treating this region as a security problem and start addressing it as a political issue requiring dialogue and statesmanship.'
