Cowboys $1.5 million LB flyer could win starting gig in training camp

USA Today14-07-2025
Jack Sanborn received a draftable grade from many prognosticators leading up to the 2022 exercise. In fact, The Athletic's Dane Brugler placed him one slot higher than Dallas' fifth-round pick Damone Clark, at No. 23. The UDFA has spent his entire career playing for Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys' new defensive coordinator, hitting restricted free agency after three years and not receiving a tender from the Chicago Bears.
So now he finds himself in Texas, ready to battle for a bigger role. Sanborn has middle linebacker experience, and the Cowboys might choose to give him the green dot to relay the commands from Eberflus; at least to begin the season. That could help bridge the gap in a similar way to how Eric Kendricks worked for Mike Zimmer last year.

Profile
Sanborn has started 19 games across his career, so if he can manage to make the roster and land the starting gig, it won't be unfamiliar to him. Murray has MLB experience as well, as does second-year player Marist Liafau, a player drafted under the previous regime. Clark is from two coordinators ago, so it remains to be seen where the new Eberflus staff lands on his prospects.
The Cowboys also drafted Shemar James on Day 3 back in April, adding him and UDFA Justin Barron to the mix alongside veteran Darius Harris. There could be an extra roster spot available as DeMarvion Overshown works his way back from his ACL injury.
The fanbase seems intently intrigued by Sanborn's upside as a player in a new location. Oftentimes it takes linebackers a few years to settle into the pro game, and Sanborn's strength as a run stuffer with an attacking mindset could endear him to the fanbase as that is something that's been missing from the depth chart more often than not recently.

Last week, the Cowboys made the expected move to start Milton over Prescott, who was sidelined in street clothes for the first week of the preseason. As Milton was in the midst of his matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the young veteran ended up suffering a shoulder injury late in the game. He likely didn't have a ton of reps left, but the Cowboys pulled him out prematurely. Liverpool vs AFC Bournemouth: Match Preview, Latest Team News and TV Watching Guide

Liverpool vs AFC Bournemouth: Premier League Opener Preview Anfield is ready for a blockbuster start to the Premier League season as Liverpool host AFC Bournemouth on Friday night. The champions, under Arne Slot, will be eager to make a strong statement in their title defence, while the visitors look to spring a surprise against one of the league's heavyweights. The fixture has a history of goals, with Liverpool famously putting nine past the Cherries in 2022, and the last four league meetings producing 13 in total. This one should offer plenty of attacking drama. Match Details and Broadcast Information Liverpool vs AFC Bournemouth kicks off at 8pm BST on Friday 15 August 2025 at Anfield. In the UK, Sky Sports Premier League will broadcast the match live, with coverage beginning at 6.30pm. Subscribers can also stream the game via Sky Go on mobile, tablet or desktop. Photo: IMAGO Team News and Possible Line-Ups Liverpool are expected to hand Premier League debuts to Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, all of whom featured in the Community Shield. Ryan Gravenberch is unavailable due to suspension and the recent birth of his child. Curtis Jones could again start alongside Dominik Szoboszlai in midfield, unless Alexis Mac Allister is fit to start. Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah should flank Ekitike in attack, while Ibrahima Konate partners Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence. Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley remain sidelined, but otherwise Liverpool have no new injury concerns. Bournemouth are working to complete the signing of Bafode Diakite from Lille before kick-off, following the sale of Illia Zabarnyi to Paris Saint-Germain. Marcos Senesi is set to partner either Diakite or another available option at centre-back. Adrien Truffert is likely to make his debut at left-back, with Adam Smith on the right. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic will start between the posts. Justin Kluivert is still recovering from a calf problem, so Marcus Tavernier could operate as the central playmaker, supported by Antoine Semenyo and David Brooks on the flanks, with Evanilson leading the line. Tyler Adams and Hamed Traore may form the midfield base, with Lewis Cook, Luis Sinisterra and Ryan Christie all ruled out through injury. Enes Unal is a long-term absentee after an ACL injury. What to Expect Liverpool are chasing a 13th consecutive unbeaten start to a Premier League season. Mohamed Salah is seeking to extend his own record by scoring on the opening day for the tenth time. Bournemouth, however, will believe they can disrupt the script. Only three clubs have beaten the reigning champions in the first round of fixtures, and the Cherries could join that list with their first-ever win at Anfield. History, though, is not in their favour, with Liverpool winning 19 of the 24 competitive meetings between the two sides. Prediction With Anfield roaring and several exciting new signings, Liverpool should have the edge. Bournemouth's reshaped defence may take time to settle, and Slot's side will be keen to shake off the lessons from their Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace. Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 AFC Bournemouth Head-to-head record: Liverpool wins: 19 Bournemouth wins: 2 Draws: 3

AFC Bournemouth in ‘Active Talks' to Sign Bundesliga Forward

Bournemouth Step Up Pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen's Amine Adli Bournemouth are actively negotiating with Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of Amine Adli, according to a report from The Athletic. The 25-year-old Morocco international could become the club's fourth senior addition of the summer as the Cherries aim to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season. Adli, who joined Leverkusen from Toulouse in 2021, has been a consistent performer in Germany. His standout campaign came in 2023-24 when he helped Leverkusen secure a remarkable domestic double, winning both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, while also reaching the Europa League final. That year, he delivered a career-best return of 10 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions. Photo: IMAGO Career and International Journey Adli's footballing roots lie in France, where he progressed through the ranks at Toulouse before making the switch to Germany. While he represented France at youth level up to the under-21s, the forward later committed his senior international future to Morocco, earning 15 caps so far. Injuries have recently hampered his progress. Last season he suffered a broken leg which ruled him out for three months, limiting him to just six Bundesliga starts. Despite that setback, his versatility across the forward line and track record in one of Europe's top leagues make him a highly attractive proposition for Bournemouth. Bournemouth's Busy Transfer Window The Cherries have already been active in the market this summer. Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has joined from Chelsea, left-back Adrien Truffert has arrived from Rennes, and centre-back Bafode Diakite was unveiled on Wednesday following his move from Lille. Adding Adli to that list would further underline the club's ambition to strengthen in all areas of the pitch. One source told The Athletic: 'Bournemouth are looking to add players who can immediately impact their starting XI, and Adli's ability to play across multiple positions fits that brief perfectly.' Why Adli Fits the Bournemouth Blueprint Adli's game blends technical skill, intelligent movement and an ability to contribute both goals and assists. His experience of winning trophies and competing in European finals adds a layer of mentality that could prove invaluable in the Premier League. Bournemouth's attack already features pace and directness, and Adli's adaptability could provide head coach Andoni Iraola with greater tactical flexibility. Given the Cherries' upward trajectory and evident willingness to invest in quality, this potential signing could be one of the most intriguing moves of the summer window. Our View – EPL Index Analysis As a Bournemouth supporter, the idea of bringing in Amine Adli is nothing short of thrilling. This is a player who has shown he can shine on the big stage, having been part of a Leverkusen team that dominated in Germany and pushed deep into Europe. For us fans, the thought of adding someone with that pedigree to our squad feels like a statement. What stands out most is his versatility. He can operate on either wing, play centrally, and adapt to the flow of a match. That kind of flexibility is exactly what we have been missing at times, especially when injuries or tactical changes forced square pegs into round holes last season. Adli's numbers in 2023-24 speak for themselves, but it is not just the goals that excite me. It is the work rate, the ability to create space for others, and his knack for turning a half-chance into something dangerous. Even with his injury last year, you cannot doubt the quality he brings. If this deal happens, it sends a message that Bournemouth are not here to simply survive in the Premier League, we are building to compete. For me, this is exactly the sort of ambition that gets the Vitality Stadium buzzing.
