Sabah degazettes 16,000 ha forest reserve for development

The Sun08-07-2025
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah state assembly has passed the Forest Enactment (Amendment) Bill 2025, degazetting 16,728.9 hectares of forest reserves to facilitate socioeconomic development.
The bill, tabled by Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, was approved by a majority voice vote after deliberation by seven assemblymen.
The affected reserves include Sipitang Forest Reserve (15,978 ha), Safoda Kinarut (320.9 ha), Sungai Tiagau (162 ha), Bengkoka Peninsula (158 ha), Trus Madi (55 ha), Umas-Umas (28 ha), Sungai Serudong (23 ha), Kudat (3 ha), and Tawau (1 ha). Nizam clarified that the degazettement aims to settle 12,012 residents from 40 villages across districts like Sipitang, Tenom, and Tawau, while also supporting the Serudong-Simanggaris ICQS Complex construction.
He assured that the state government has identified replacement land to maintain forest reserve coverage, resulting in only a 0.47% reduction. Sabah retains 3.55 million hectares of forest reserves.
Nizam emphasized that the decision prioritizes rural welfare, with thorough evaluations ensuring minimal ecological impact. The state is also gazetting new protected areas under Section 5A of the Forest Enactment 1968. - Bernama

KPWKM Channels Over RM20 Mln To PSK To Assist Vulnerable Groups

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has channelled RM20.65 million this year to Voluntary Welfare Organisations (PSK) that provide services to the elderly, the disabled (OKU) and children. KPWKM Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the assistance included food and beverages, special allowances for disabled students, volunteer allowances as well as administrative and infrastructure grants. "The assistance is based on the principle of welfare as a shared responsibility, hence PSK are encouraged to obtain additional funding sources without relying entirely on the government," she said. Noraini said this during the winding-up session on the debate on the Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) 2023 for KPWKM at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today. Regarding the proposal to establish a special ministry for the elderly in preparation for Malaysia as an ageing country, she said the National Senior Citizens Advisory and Legislative Council would be the main platform to coordinate the issue. Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang, while winding up the debate on the report on the human rights of the Orang Asli, said the government was committed to ensuring that no group was left out in all aspects, including democratic rights. She said the Orang Asli Department (JAKOA) had implemented various initiatives, including organising awareness campaigns for voters in Orang Asli villages in collaboration with the Election Commission (EC) and civil society organisations to provide a clear understanding of the importance of being a voter. "To ensure that physical access is not an obstacle, JAKOA also helps to facilitate transportation and logistics, especially for communities in the interior and difficult to access," she said. While winding up the debate for the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), the relevant Deputy Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the government was developing a one-stop centre to standardise the application and approval procedures for premises and hawker licences.

PM Anwar Welcomes Positive Signals From Bangkok, Phnom Penh To Consider Ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the positive signals and willingness shown by Bangkok and Phnom Penh to consider a ceasefire to prevent further hostilities along the borders between the two countries. Anwar said he had spoken to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai Thursday evening to express Malaysia's concern over the escalation of tensions. 'In our conversations, in Malaysia's capacity as ASEAN Chair for 2025, I appealed directly to both leaders for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further hostilities and to create space for peaceful dialogue and diplomatic resolution. bootstrap slideshow 'I welcome the positive signals and willingness shown by both Bangkok and Phnom Penh to consider this path forward,' he said in a Facebook post. The prime minister said Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate this process in the spirit of ASEAN unity and shared responsibility. 'I firmly believe that ASEAN's strength lies in its solidarity and that peace must always be our collective and unwavering choice,' he said. Thai and Cambodian troops reportedly clashed early Thursday in a disputed area along their shared border, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest confrontation. Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours have been rising since May 28, following a deadly border clash near the Preah Vihear area that left one Cambodian soldier dead. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have been disputing an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, which continues to sour diplomatic ties.
