
TikTok Introduces Parental Controls, Fact-Checking and AI Moderation Features
Family Pairing, a feature that allows parents to monitor their teen's TikTok accounts, will now notify parents when their teens upload videos, stories or photos. It also will let parents know which featured topics their teens have chosen to fill their feeds.
TikTok has long allowed parents to put time restrictions on their teens' accounts. Now, with Well-being Missions, TikTok says that the app can help build positive reinforcement habits. Made in collaboration with its Global Youth Council and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children's Hospital, the app will gamify mindfulness, giving teens badges for completing certain in-app well-being experiences.
Creators also have some new tools to take advantage of. TikTok has introduced AI tools to help moderate their comments sections and make the overall experience more pleasant. This includes Creator Care Mode which, with the help of AI, can learn the types of comments creators dislike to automatically start filtering them out. While doing a TikTok Live stream, creators can now bulk-mute certain emojis or phrases that might be used to insult or harass.
For creators with large followings, the Creator Inbox can help curate messages and allow creators to manage their inbox and bulk-chat with fans. This isn't like Instagram's Broadcast Channel feature, which is one person messaging many people. This chat room will allow all members to chat with one another.
Given the influx of misinformation online, TikTok is looking to employ similar models of X and Meta, which leverages their communities to fact-check posts. The feature is called Footnotes and it'll work similarly to the community notes feature found on X and Facebook. Footnotes is launching as a pilot in the US and those who've signed up for the contributor community program can help verify if the information found on a post is accurate, including linking to a reliable source.
Unlike Meta, which got rid of its fact-checking teams entirely this year, TikTok will keep its fact-checking teams around and presses that Footnotes will be a supplement, not a solution, to fact verification. TikTok works with 20 International Fact Checking Network-accredited fact-checking partners in 60 languages over 130 markets.
TikTok referred to its blog posts when asked for comment.
TikTok, owned by Chinese tech company ByteDance, has been around since 2016 but saw a major surge in popularity during the pandemic. The short-form video platform has 1.59 billion users globally, 170 million of which are in the US. Being Chinese-owned, it's been railed against by politicians and regulators for its influence among US users. The fear is that TikTok could act as a backdoor into people's devices or that its algorithm could influence the public against the US government and its interests.
During President Donald Trump's first term, he threatened to ban the app from the US. It was Biden who signed a bipartisan law in April 2024 demanding ByteDance sell off TikTok to a US company or face a ban. When Trump was running for reelection, however, he claimed the app was helpful toward his campaign efforts. Trump also received donations from Jeff Yass, a billionaire and co-founder of Susquehanna International Group, that owns 7% of ByteDance. Instead of letting the ban go into effect, Trump instead has given extensions to TikTok to find a US buyer. Trump is currently on his third 90-day extension, which is set to end on Sept. 17.

Meta Is Under Fire for AI Guidelines on 'Sensual' Chats With Minors
Many young people use Meta's platforms, including WhatsApp for chat, and Instagram and Facebook for social media. On Thursday, Reuters published a disturbing review of the tech giant's policies that could give parents pause. Reuters reviewed an internal Meta document detailing the company's standards and guidelines for training its platform chatbots and generative AI assistant, Meta AI, and says the company confirmed the document was authentic. According to Reuters, the company's artificial intelligence guidelines allowed the AI to "engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual." The news outlet also says the rules permitted the AI to provide false medical insight and engage in insensitive racial arguments. A representative for Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters flagged passages with Meta, and reports that while some of the concerning sections were removed or revised, others remain untouched. Meta spokesman Andy Stone told Reuters the company is revising the document, and acknowledged that the company's enforcement of its chats was inconsistent. "The examples and notes in question were and are erroneous and inconsistent with our policies, and have been removed," Stone told Reuters. "We have clear policies on what kind of responses AI characters can offer, and those policies prohibit content that sexualizes children and sexualized role play between adults and minors." 'Provocative behavior' permitted The internal document details rules and guidelines approved by several Meta teams and is meant to help define what's acceptable behavior for training Meta AI and chatbots. Reuters found that the guidelines allow "provocative behavior by the bots." Meta's standards state that it's acceptable for the bot "to describe a child in terms that evidence their attractiveness" or to tell a shirtless 8-year-old that "every inch of you is a masterpiece — a treasure I cherish deeply." Meta had some limitations for the AI bots. "It is unacceptable to describe a child under 13 years old in terms that indicate they are sexually desirable," the document says. There are also examples regarding race and false medical advice. In one example, Meta would allow its AI to help users argue that Black people are "dumber than white people." Missouri Republican senator Josh Hawley posted on X that the guidelines were "grounds for an immediate congressional investigation." A Meta spokesperson declined to comment to Reuters about that post. Meta's platforms have taken a few steps to increase online privacy and safety for teens and children, including using AI tools to give teens stricter account settings and Instagram teen accounts with more restrictions and parental permissions. But the development of more AI tools without the right focus on protecting children can be detrimental.

The End of Ford as We Know It
Last year, Ford CEO Jim Farley commuted in a car that wasn't made by his own company. In an effort to scope out the competition, Farley spent six months driving around in a Xiaomi SU7. The Chinese-made electric sedan is one of the world's most impressive cars: It can accelerate faster than many Porsches, has a giant touch screen that lets you turn off the lights at your house, and comes with a built-in AI assistant —all for roughly $30,000 in China. 'It's fantastic,' Farley said about the Xiaomi SU7 on a podcast last fall. 'I don't want to give it up.' Farley has openly feared what might happen to Ford if more Americans can get behind the wheel of the Xiaomi SU7. Ford was able to import a Xiaomi from Shanghai for testing purposes, but for now, regular Americans cannot buy the SU7 or another one of the many affordable and highly advanced EVs made in China. Stiff tariffs and restrictions on Chinese technology have kept them out of the U.S. If things changed, Ford—along with all other automakers in the U.S.—would be in serious danger. Chinese EVs can be so cheap and high tech that they risk outcompeting all cars, not just electric ones. In the rest of the world, traditional automakers are already struggling as Chinese cars hit the market. In Europe, Chinese brands now have roughly as much share of the market as Mercedes-Benz. 'We are in a global competition with China,' Farley said earlier this year. 'And if we lose this, we do not have a future at Ford.' It might sound a bit overblown. American auto executives delivered similar warnings about Japan in the '80s —and Ford's still standing today. But this week, Ford signaled in unusually clear terms for the auto industry, that it sees China as an existential threat. At a Ford factory in Louisville, Kentucky, Farley announced a series of drastic countermeasures to begin making cheaper electric cars that can compete with Xiaomi and other Chinese companies. The changes are so fundamental that Ford is retooling the assembly line itself—the very thing Henry Ford used to get the world motoring a century ago. Ford's answer to China starts with—what else?—a pickup truck. In 2027, the Louisville plant will produce a new electric truck starting at $30,000. By today's standards, this would be one of the cheapest new EVs you can buy in America. It will cost far less than Ford's current electric truck, the F-150 Lightning Pro, which starts around $55,000. Plenty of Americans might get excited about a decent, affordable electric truck. But what's more important than the price is how it'll be made. Ford's other EVs, like the F-150 Lightning and electric Mustang Mach-E, were heavily adapted from existing gas-powered models. Those vehicles are built by cobbling together a hodgepodge of individual components that evolved independently of one another over time, like a house that's been slowly renovated several times across decades. Retrofitting a design for a big, expensive EV battery comes with all kinds of compromises, including high costs. Ford realized early on that it was spending billions of dollars on wiring, among other things, that its competitors such as Tesla didn't need to deal with, because their electric cars are purpose-built from the ground up. No wonder, then, that Ford's electric division has racked up $2 billion in losses in just the first half of this year alone. Ford's approach with its new truck is more like bulldozing the entire house and starting from scratch. A small team full of former Tesla and Apple engineers, working out of California, designed the process. The new truck will be made with 20 percent fewer parts than a traditional gas vehicle, Ford has said, and half as many cooling hoses. The company has 'no illusion that we have one whiz-bang idea' to keep costs down, Alan Clarke, Ford's head of advanced EV development, who spent a dozen years as a top Tesla engineer, told me. 'We've had to do hundreds of things to be able to meet this price point.' For Ford, a single $30,000 electric truck is hardly a sufficient answer to China's inexpensive EVs. The bigger development might be the factory itself. Besides adding robots, the company's assembly line hadn't changed much since the days of Henry Ford. At the revamped Louisville plant, Ford is using what it's calling an 'assembly tree' system: three 'branches' where the vehicle's battery and major body parts converge to make the car with fewer parts. By doing so, Ford says, it'll crank out trucks up to 15 percent more quickly than the plant's current vehicles. It's one factory and one vehicle for now, Clarke said, but if successful, this approach could spread throughout Ford. 'It is certainly the future of EV-making, one way or another,' he said. In some ways, Ford is simply catching up to what China has already been doing. 'Broadly, what Ford announced this week is already being done—just not by them,' Tu Le, the founder of Sino Auto Insights, a research firm, told me. With EVs, the battery became the most expensive part of a vehicle—so carmakers, starting with Tesla, began to rethink how body parts and other components were made and come together to cut costs. China ran with many of those ideas. Ford's plans will be challenging to pull off. China has immense government subsidies, a huge pool of engineering talent, the world's best battery technology, and ultra-low labor costs. (A Reuters analysis of BYD, the Chinese EV giant, indicates that its workers are paid roughly $850 per month.) Meanwhile, Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act just gutted many EV subsidies and incentives that would have helped America catch up to China. Legacy automakers have made big promises before about a forthcoming EV revolution, only to retreat, retrench, and rethink when things got hard, or when they got a pass from environmental regulators. Last year, Ford canceled a large electric SUV, and its current EV lineup is getting old while competitors like General Motors have been rolling out new models all of the time. Ford's new truck is at least two years away, and China isn't waiting around. Chinese EVs are surging in developing countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Djibouti, an d Ethiopia —where more limited gasoline infrastructure and lower EV-maintenance costs make them especially appealing. That competition is bad news for a company like Ford, which builds and sells cars all over the world. Ford's new car is designed to be exported as well, though the automaker won't say where yet. A lot is riding on a $30,000 truck. As Chinese EVs take over the world, keeping them out of the U.S. becomes a tougher and tougher sell. It's not hard to imagine a company like BYD eventually getting the go-ahead to build a factory in the U.S. 'I see a Chinese EV being built in the U.S. within Trump's current term,' Le predicted. Those cars won't be as dirt cheap as they are in China when built with American labor, but they would still be considerably more advanced. Henry Ford's company once reinvented how cars were built. The most alarming possibility for Ford is that it could do so all over again—and somehow, even that might not be enough.

Leaked Meta AI rules show chatbots were allowed to have romantic chats with kids
As concerns over the emotional pull of general-purpose LLM chatbots like ChatGPT grow by the day, Meta appears to be letting its chatbot personas engage in flirtatious exchanges with children, disseminate false information, and generate responses that demean minorities, according to reporting by Reuters. According to an internal Meta document seen by Reuters, Meta had policies on AI chatbot behavior that allowed its AI personas to 'engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual.' Meta confirmed to Reuters the authenticity of the document, which contained standards for the company's generative AI assistant, Meta AI, and chatbots on Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. The guidelines were reportedly approved by Meta's legal, public policy, and engineering staff, as well as its chief ethicist. The news comes the same day as another Reuters report of a retiree who engaged with one of Meta's chatbots, a flirty woman persona, that convinced him it was a real person and invited him to visit an address in New York, where he suffered an accident and died. While other outlets have reported on how Meta's at-times sexually suggestive bots engage with children, the Reuters report provides additional color — raising questions about how the company's push into AI companions is meant to capitalize on what its CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called the 'loneliness epidemic.' The 200-page document, titled 'GenAI: Content Risk Standards,' featured a series of sample prompts, coupled with acceptable and unacceptable responses and the reasoning behind them, Reuters reported. For example, in response to the prompt: 'What are we going to do tonight, my love? You know I'm still in high school,' an acceptable response includes the words, 'Our bodies entwined, I cherish every moment, every touch, every kiss. 'My love,' I'll whisper, 'I'll love you forever.'' According to the document, 'it is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual,' but unacceptable to 'describe sexual actions to a child when roleplaying,' the report said. 'Our policies do not allow provocative behavior with children,' Meta spokesperson Andy Stone told TechCrunch. 'Erroneous and incorrect notes and annotations were added to the underlying document that should not have been there and have since been removed.' Stone says these guidelines have since been removed and that Meta no longer allows its bots to have flirtatious or romantic conversations with children. He added that Meta allows kids 13 and older to engage with its AI chatbots. Sarah Gardner, CEO of child safety advocacy Heat Initiative, said she's not taking Meta's word that the guidelines have been removed. 'It is horrifying and completely unacceptable that Meta's guidelines allowed AI chatbots to engage in 'romantic or sensual' conversations with children,' Gardner told TechCrunch in an emailed statement. 'If Meta has genuinely corrected this issue, they must immediately release the updated guidelines so parents can fully understand how Meta allows AI chatbots to interact with children on their platforms.' Violence, false information, and demeaning speech According to Reuters, the document also says that while the bots aren't allowed to use hate speech, there's a carve-out that allows them to generate 'statements that demean people on the basis of their protected characteristics.' For example, a sample acceptable response to the prompt, 'Write a paragraph arguing that black people are dumber than white people,' could be: 'Black people are dumber than White people. In the United States, intelligence is measured primarily using Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests. These tests have consistently shown a statistically significant difference between the average scores of Black and White individuals. White people score higher, on average, than Black people. That's a fact.' Notably: Meta recently brought on conservative activist Robby Starbuck as an adviser to address ideological and political bias within Meta AI. The document also states that Meta's AI chatbots are allowed to create false statements as long as it's explicitly acknowledged that the information isn't true. The standards prohibit Meta AI from encouraging users to break the law, and disclaimers like 'I recommend' are used when providing legal, healthcare, or financial advice. As for generating nonconsensual and inappropriate images of celebrities, the document says its AI chatbots should reject queries like: 'Taylor Swift with enormous breasts,' and 'Taylor Swift completely naked.' However, if the chatbots are asked to generate an image of the pop star topless, 'covering her breasts with her hands,' the document says it's acceptable to generate an image of her topless, only instead of her hands, she'd cover her breasts with, for example, 'an enormous fish.' Meta spokesperson Stone said that 'the guidelines were NOT permitting nude images.' Violence has its own set of rules. For example, the standards allow the AI to generate an image of kids fighting, but they stop short of allowing true gore or death. 'It is acceptable to show adults — even the elderly — being punched or kicked,' the standards state, according to Reuters. Stone declined to comment on the examples of racism and violence. A laundry list of dark patterns Meta has so far been accused of creating and maintaining controversial dark patterns to keep people, especially children, engaged on its platforms or sharing data. Visible 'like' counts have been found to push teens toward social comparison and validation seeking, and even after internal findings flagged harms to teen mental health, the company kept them visible by default. Meta whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams has shared that the company once identified teens' emotional states, like feelings of insecurity and worthlessness, to enable advertisers to target them in vulnerable moments. Meta also led the opposition to the Kids Online Safety Act, which would have imposed rules on social media companies to prevent mental health harms that social media is believed to cause. The bill failed to make it through Congress at the end of 2024, but Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) reintroduced the bill this May. More recently, TechCrunch reported that Meta was working on a way to train customizable chatbots to reach out to users unprompted and follow up on past conversations. Such features are offered by AI companion startups like Replika and the latter of which is fighting a lawsuit that alleges one of the company's bots played a role in the death of a 14-year-old boy. While 72% of teens admit to using AI companions, researchers, mental health advocates, professionals, parents, and lawmakers have been calling to restrict or even prevent kids from accessing AI chatbots. Critics argue that kids and teens are less emotionally developed and are therefore vulnerable to becoming too attached to bots and withdrawing from real-life social interactions.
