‘Andhera' review: Chills and thrills in a battle between the known and the unimaginable
A sinister dark presence is hanging over Mumbai. Literally so – this malevolent force that appears both as a gooey web of tentacles and faceless clones of its victims is creeping over Mumbai's Victorian-era facades and modern but already crumbling buildings. The black mass has already claimed Bani (Jahnvi Rawat). Who's next? Diligent police officer Kalpana (Priya Bapat) sets out to investigate, her quest leading her to a wellness retreat managed by Ayesha (Surveen Chawla). Kalpana has to swat away workplace sexism and only has the support of her loyal colleague Kanitkar (Anand Ingale). The Darkness – it's always capitalised, spoken of as a fact rather than a possibility – is also threatening to consume Jay (Karanvir Malhotra). Jay's elder brother Prithvi (Pranay Pachauri) has already been affected. Prithvi is lying in a coma, unable to reveal what he knows about the phenomenon and whether it has anything to do with his medical practice. Jay himself can't decide whether the darkness is a product of his clinical depression or a projection of his guilt over his previous actions. Jay teams up with paranormal investigator Rumi (Prajakta Koli) to find out the connections that seem to exist between Prithvi and Bani, reality and suggestion, the known and the unimaginable. The other characters include Darius (Vatsal Sheth), Uberai (Dilip Shankar), Sahay (Parvin Dabas) and Jude (Kavin Dave). Jude insists that a comic book has predicted whatever is happening. The past weighs heavily on the present for nearly everybody involved, with even Rumi's mother Saba (Priyanka Setia) seemingly playing a part. Andhera is an ambitious mesh of psychological horror, supernatural elements and rogue technology. The Prime Video series always has some new idea or the other to peddle when it appears that the twists are running out, the J-horror type moments are losing their shock value and the solutions are becoming too obvious. Andhera is the handiwork of creator Gaurav Desai and director Raaghav Dar. Desai has also co-written the Hindi series with Karan Anshuman and Chintan Sarda. The show resembles a tour down a rabbit hole with several detours. Big on psychobabble, heavy on jump scares and rich in atmospherics, Andhera is a fitfully frightening affair, its parts more intriguing than its sum. The plot takes some time kicking in, what with so many interwoven strands, flashbacks and parallel happenings. Andhera is only the latest web series to stick to the seemingly mandatory eight-episode stipulation when matters could have been wrapped up in fewer chapters. More than the mostly serviceable performances, Huentsang Mohapatra's camerawork, Ketan Sodha's background score, Vivek Sachindanand's sound design and Preetisheel Singh's make-up deliver the chills and thrills. With the exception of Priya Bapat and Surveen Chawla in some sequences and a consistent Prajakta Koli, Andhera doesn't have any outstanding turn that creates emotional investment in the proceedings. The focus on the foul-tempered, needlessly aggressive Jay and his dynamic with his sibling Prithvi steals the attention away from Kalpana's back story. While the revelation of the actual mastermind is hardly a surprise, there's yet another curveball in store for viewers who think they have solved the mystery. There's plenty of show and lots of hokum tell. As a show about a darkness that lives within and without its characters, Andhera delivers the goods, even if it takes far too long to get there and wastes too much time on repeating itself. Play

Bigg Boss 19: Fans to choose Shehbaz Badesha or Mridul Tiwari as one of the contestants in the Salman Khan-hosted show
Bigg Boss is set to make a comeback with its 19th season, and fans are excited to watch the show. The show is set to premiere on 24th August, and the makers have shared a new promo unveiling some of the latest updates. Through its special contest Fans Ka Faisla, this one-of-a-kind initiative places the power directly in the hands of the audience, transforming them from passive viewers into active participants in shaping the course of the show. Two shortlisted contenders will compete for a single spot: Shehbaz Badesha, the charismatic and quick-witted brother of Bigg Boss alumnus Shehnaaz Gill, and Mridul Tiwari, one of India's most-followed YouTubers and creator of the widely popular comedy channel The MriDul, with over 18 million subscribers. For the first time ever, a contestant's journey will begin entirely through fan votes, making viewers an integral part of the selection process. Voting for Fans Ka Faisla is now open exclusively on the platform and will remain live until 11:59 PM on 21st August. The contestant receiving the highest number of votes will be unveiled during the Grand Premiere, where Salman Khan will introduce them in a never-before-seen entry that promises to instantly change the dynamics of the house. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? HomeLane Get Quote Undo More than just a vote, this is a groundbreaking, fan-driven moment—an opportunity for viewers to take control, make their voices heard, and directly influence the start of the season. In a house where every move matters, this season truly belongs to the people. Speaking about the unique fan-driven format, Shehbaz Badesha said, 'Last time I came in for a short spin, bas ek chhota sa jhalak dikhaya tha, but this time, main pura season ka tadka ban ke jaaunga. I've been part of Bigg Boss before, but always from the sidelines—either cheering for my sister Shehnaz or visiting as a guest. This time, it's different… this time, it could be MY journey. I'm not just a 'celebrity sibling'; I'm someone who's been underestimated and overlooked. I know the kind of energy I bring—unfiltered, unpredictable, and unapologetically Punjabi. I'm not here to play safe or be everyone's best friend. I'm here to shake things up and give people something to talk about. The best part is that the audience gets to decide if I even step inside. I promise to make this season as entertaining as Shehnaz's season was. If you want someone who won't play it safe, vote Shehbaz.' Sharing his excitement about the opportunity, Mridul Tiwari said, 'Bigg Boss isn't just a show—it's a proving ground, and I have been ready for this fight for years. I am ready to bring my wit, my game, and an unfiltered version of who I am. I am not someone who blends into the background; rather, I believe in taking a stand, facing challenges head-on, and competing with power. No hiding, no sugar-coating—just real competition. Ultimately, the audience will decide who deserves to stay, and I trust them to recognise authenticity when they see it. I am ready to give my all, and with a fan-powered brotherhood by my side, let's make it happen and win this together.'

Kim young-kwang takes on a double life as Moon-baek in 'Trigger'; shares reflections on gun violence
Kim Young-kwang plays Moon-baek In the gripping action thriller Trigger, Kim Young-kwang plays Moon-baek, a man who seems fun and lighthearted at first-a quirky, almost childish companion-but soon reveals a dark and complex side. The story kicks off with the chaos unleashed by illegal firearms hitting the streets. Moon-baek starts off friendly and even helpful to the main character, police officer Lee Do (played by Kim Nam-gil ). But as the story twists and turns, Moon-baek's true identity and intentions come out. Kim Young-kwang was drawn to this role because of its fresh, dual-layered character and found it fun to act out both the goofy and threatening sides of Moon-baek. This split identity was important in a story heavy with social themes. To balance the dark mood, Moon-baek's character brings some light-hearted moments. He wanted audiences to find Moon-baek entertaining so they could catch a breath amid the tension. Yet, once the guns come into play, Moon-baek's belief that firearms make the world equal is chilling-and Kim Young-kwang deliberately avoided justifying this dangerous idea in his acting. Action-packed charisma with a strong anti-gun message Despite his outstanding gunman scenes, including a standout moment where his towering 190cm frame unleashes a volley of BB pellets, Kim Young-kwang firmly opposes gun use off-screen. A self-declared "no guns" advocate, he said in interviews that if he ever received a gun, he would immediately report it instead of using it himself. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo He trained with a former special forces instructor to get his moves right but kept his real stance clear: guns are too dangerous to handle casually. Moon-baek's free-shooting style in the series was pure acting-and Kim Young-kwang's real-life stance is one of strict gun control. Moon-baek's increasingly flashy style in the later episodes also tells a story. As this terminally ill character struggles with his fate, his makeup grows wearier but his clothes become more dazzling-hiding pain behind glamour. Kim Young-kwang even let his real gray hair show to add authenticity. Stories of pain and a trigger for reflection Trigger is also notable for highlighting the lives of society's most vulnerable: a law student, a victim of school violence, an overworked nurse, a grieving father, and others pushed to the edge. Each episode underscores how desperation can lead to dangerous choices-but the show's message is clear: No matter the pain, guns are not the answer. Kim Young-kwang echoed this through Moon-baek, emphasizing that violence isn't justified by hardship. The finale leaves viewers with a powerful ethical question as Lee Do chooses responsibility over guns, highlighting how firearm access can awaken human violence. Kim Young-kwang appreciated the show ending with this thought-provoking message over simple action thrills, and he hopes for a sequel to explore these themes further. Beyond Trigger After the success of Trigger , Kim Young-kwang is diving into a variety of roles-romance, comedy, even fantasy. He looks forward to projects like the KBS drama Eunsoo's Good Day in September and the movie First Ride in October, plus an upcoming series Recharge Me. Known for his love of romance genres, he lightheartedly said romantic scenes always make him smile. He also dreams of fantasy roles involving elaborate makeup and motion capture, inspired by movies like Planet of the Apes. Trigger holds a special place for him beyond acting: during filming, he adopted two cats named Moon-i and Baek-i, after his character. He cherishes these memories and imagines spending his remaining time traveling with them if life were short-showcasing a tender side behind the tough character. Kim Young-kwang's portrayal of Moon-baek in Trigger blends thrilling action, complex morality, and social commentary , wrapped up in style and heartfelt humanity. It's a must-watch series that's as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.
