Honor 400 series lands in Malaysia: AI-enhanced cameras, 200MP lens, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
PETALING JAYA, May 23 — After a series of teasers, Honor has finally launched its premium mid-range smartphones, the Honor 400 and Honor 400 Pro here in Malaysia, making our market one of the first to get these smartphones. Replacing the Honor 200 series in our market, these devices bring improved performance, camera, display, and a new AI Image to Video feature. More on that later.

Honor 400 and 400 Pro Malaysia: Specs and features
The Honor 400 is offered with three colour options, namely Desert Gold, Tidal Blue, and Midnight Black. The Honor 400 Pro swaps out Desert Gold for Lunar Grey instead. Durability-wise, the vanilla device is rated at IP66, while the Pro model gets IP68 and IP69 for dust and water resistance.
At the front, the Honor 400 is equipped with a 6.55″ 1.5K (2736×1264) AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Its Pro siblings get a slightly larger and crispier 6.7-inch 1.5K (2800×1280) Quad Curved AMOLED panel with the same 120Hz refresh rate. Both displays have the same 5,000 nits peak brightness when displaying HDR content.
Powering the Honor 400 is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, while the 400 Pro gets the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm's flagship mobile chipset from the previous year.
Imaging-wise, both devices come standard with a 200MP f/1.9 main shooter with a 1/1.4' sensor and OIS, along with a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera with OIS. The Honor 400 Pro gets an additional 50MP f/2.4 3x telephoto shooter that comes equipped with a Sony IMX856 sensor. Selfies are handled by a 50MP f/2.0 selfie shooter for both models.

Speaking of imaging, the Honor 400 and 400 Pro debut with Honor's new AI Image to Video feature. Co-developed with Google Cloud, this feature can be found inside the phones' native Photos app and can turn a still image into a 5-second video, making the characters in the photo 'come to life'. This feature is especially useful for old family photos and comic books.
Other AI features included with the Honor 400 series include AI Cutout, AI Eraser 2.0, AI Outpainting, AI Upscale, and AI Face Tune.
Keeping lights on for the Honor 400 and 400 Pro is a 6,000mAh battery. This cell can be charged at 80W via USB-C with the Honor 400, while the 400 Pro can handle 100W wired charging and 50W using a Qi wireless charger.

MCMC clarifies mobile phone data collection for national statistics, says no identifiable user information involved
KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has clarified its collection of mobile phone data (MPD) from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), assuring that no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is accessed, processed, or disclosed. The clarification comes amid recent media reports regarding the matter. In a statement today, MCMC said MPD was used strictly for the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key domains, namely the ICT Sector and the Tourism Sector. For the ICT Sector, MPD helps produce granular statistics, such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates at the state, district, mukim, parliamentary constituency, state legislative assembly (DUN), and local authority levels. For the Tourism Sector, it generates indicators such as the number of visitors and domestic tourism trips. 'The MPD data requested from MNOs is anonymised and contains no PII. 'In addition, MNOs are given the option to either process the MPD data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to MCMC, or, for MNOs without in-house processing capabilities, to submit the anonymised data to MCMC for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' it said. MCMC further clarified that the use of MPD as a new source of national statistics was a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes. Implementation of MPD is through collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science, it added. Over the past two years, MCMC said extensive engagement with all MNOs had been carried out to ensure mutual understanding of the data requirements, processes, and privacy safeguards. These included the MPD National Workshop held from Sept 2 to 5, 2024, attended by representatives from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture, and MNOs (CelcomDigi, Maxis, TM Tech, U Mobile, and YTL). 'This initiative aligns with international best practices. Malaysia Techlympics 2025 aims for 1.7 million participants nationwide
PUTRAJAYA, June 6 — Malaysia Techlympics 2025 has officially kicked off, aiming to engage 1.7 million participations nationwide and will extend its reach to international participants in a Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) competition. This enculturation programme organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) through the Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (Bioeconomy Corporation), an agency under MOSTI and as strategic partner, focuses to promote interest, instil a strong STI culture among students and youth, and helping to shape a future-ready generation. Open to participants aged seven to 30, the competition will be carried out in phases, starting at the school level, continuing with zonal screenings across six main regions and progressing to the National Finals, which is scheduled to take place in November. The competition format combines practical challenges, real-world technology exposure and experiential learning. The initiative also includes inclusivity, an effort on widening access and equity by reaching underserved communities and remote areas through targeted outreach initiatives. Singapore's GrabCab taxi service rolls out in July with Toyota Prius hybrids, EVs to follow in 2025
SINGAPORE, June 5 — Grab's new taxi service, GrabCab, will launch in July with an initial fleet of 40 fifth-generation Toyota Prius electric hybrid taxis, making it Singapore's sixth taxi operator. GrabCab, a subsidiary of GrabRentals, announced that it plans to gradually expand its fleet, with Hyundai Kona electric hybrids joining in August and a fully electric vehicle expected in 2025, according to a report published in The Straits Times today. The company aims to meet the Land Transport Authority's minimum fleet requirement of 800 taxis for a street-hail operator licence within three years. Director of GrabRentals Victor Sim said around 700 to 800 drivers have applied to join GrabCab, with 400 to 500 selected based on eligibility, including possession of a Taxi Driver's Vocational Licence (TDVL) and a clean safety record. Applicants without a TDVL will be guided to enrol in a fully-funded training course to obtain the licence. Rental rates for GrabCab start at S$117 (RM385) per day, with the first 100 drivers offered a discounted rate of S$112 per day, slightly higher than rates offered by competitors such as ComfortDelGro and Prime Taxi. For passengers, fares for the Toyota Prius models will include a S$4.60 flag-down rate, with 26 cents charged per 400m under 10km and every 350m thereafter, as well as 26 cents for every 45 seconds of waiting. Fares for GrabCab's electric vehicles will start at S$4.80, with the same distance and waiting charges. Sim said GrabCab's fare structure is aligned with industry rates and that its taxi meters are integrated with the Grab app, allowing drivers to seamlessly handle both street-hail and ride-hail bookings. The app also features a relief driver matching service that uses a chat function, offering a more convenient alternative to traditional methods. Sim emphasised GrabCab's strengths in technology and partnerships, which allow it to offer drivers up to 25 per cent discounts on fuel and EV charging at selected providers. Addressing concerns from existing Grab-affiliated taxi drivers, Grab clarified there would be no changes to the app's job allocation system to favour GrabCab drivers. Sim assured that the aim is to increase the overall supply of drivers, especially by re-engaging inactive TDVL holders, rather than competing with current operators.
