Scientific study reveals promising prospects for sustainable agriculture in UAE

A scientific study conducted by researchers at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), in collaboration with international scientific institutions, and published in the prestigious journal Science, has revealed promising results that could mark a qualitative shift in sustainable agriculture in desert environments, by leveraging microbial communities found deep within arid soils.
The study showed that biological interactions between plant roots and surrounding microbes play a pivotal role in enhancing soil fertility and boosting crop resilience to harsh climatic conditions—opening new horizons for agricultural development in dry regions such as the UAE.
Dr. John Klironomos, Professor of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah, stated, 'Managing the relationship between plants and microbes with scientific precision represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of soil and how to harness it for sustainable agriculture, especially in climatically challenging environments.'
The study focused on the concept of 'plant–soil feedback,' which highlights how plants contribute to shaping microbial communities within the soil, which in turn impact the plants' ability to absorb nutrients and water.
The success of this complex ecosystem depends on how it is managed scientifically, which can either enhance or hinder agricultural productivity.
AUS is currently applying this model through field experiments on local crops such as wheat and date palms, using microbial inoculants and natural biostimulants aimed at increasing plant resistance to heat and salinity.
To support these efforts, the university launched the 'Sharjah Sustainable Agriculture Research Group' in collaboration with local researchers and experts, with the aim of advancing studies related to soil rehabilitation and promoting environmental agriculture in the UAE and the region.
Dr. Junling Zhang, from China Agricultural University and one of the study's co-authors, said, 'Microbial life represents an underutilised resource. When we understand and enhance its mechanisms, we can bring about a major transformation in agriculture, making it more aligned with natural ecosystems.'
The study also pointed to the importance of adopting traditional agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, intercropping, and minimal tillage, which contribute to enhancing soil microbiota when applied based on scientific principles.
The study concluded that soil is no longer merely a passive medium for planting, but rather a living system that can be scientifically harnessed to support food security and address climate change—through agricultural practices that prioritise soil sustainability and biodiversity protection.
The study was published under the title 'Steering Plant-Soil Feedback for Sustainable Agriculture" in the July 2025 issue of Science.

Published in the prestigious scientific journal npj Digital Medicine – Nature, the study conducted in collaboration with Abu Dhabi's Capital Health Screening Centre (CHSC) is among the largest real-world clinical validations of an AI-driven healthcare solution to date, analyzing over one million chest X-rays to evaluate the efficacy and scalability of AI in TB screening. The study assessed AI Radiology in Screening TB (AIRIS-TB), M42's cutting-edge AI model engineered to streamline routine tuberculosis screenings, allowing radiologists to focus on more complex or urgent cases. The model demonstrated exceptional performance, indicating high diagnostic accuracy and an unprecedented 0 percent of false negatives. This means that the model has the potential to safely automate up to 80 percent of routine chest X-ray assessments, directly reducing the workload of radiologists, minimising the risk of human error, and delivering significant cost efficiencies in high-throughput low-prevalence settings. Labour-intensive Currently, reviews of chest X-rays remains labor-intensive and prone to oversight and error, potentially leading to missed or delayed diagnoses. A prior study has indicated a 26.6 percent increase in missed findings when radiologists double their annotation speed, and a rise in errors after 9 hours into their shift. AIRIS-TB delivered consistently strong performance across a wide range of demographic groups, including variations in gender, age, HIV status, income levels, and a diverse population covering six World Health Organization (WHO) regions, highlighting the model's robustness, fairness and generalizability across diverse global populations. These results indicate the model's potential to significantly improve clinical workflows and drive earlier, more equitable screening of TB in high-volume programs worldwide. "This landmark study marks a pivotal moment in the potential power of AI in the global fight against tuberculosis,' said Dimitris Moulavasilis, Group CEO of M42. 'Our AIRIS-TB model stands as a compelling testament to the unmatched accuracy, safety and scalability that AI can deliver, particularly in resource-limited settings where there is a shortage of radiologists and the need to tackle TB is greatest.' Conducted in collaboration with Capital Health Screening Centre (CHSC) in Abu Dhabi, part of the M42 group, the study is among the largest real-world clinical validations of an AI-driven healthcare solution to date, analyzing over one million chest X-rays (CXRs) to evaluate the efficacy and scalability of AI in TB screening. The study assessed AI Radiology in Screening TB (AIRIS-TB), M42's cutting-edge AI model engineered to streamline routine tuberculosis screenings, allowing radiologists to focus on more complex or urgent cases. AIRIS-TB demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving an Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUROC) of 98.5% - a clear indicator of its high efficiency in triaging CXRs for TB. With an estimated 10.8 million people falling ill from TB and a total of 1.25 million people dying from it in 2023, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), and recent reports of TB returning to being the world's leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, M42's AIRIS-TB demonstrates the potential of AI solutions delivering real-world impact. AIRIS-TB reported an unprecedented 0% false-negative rate for tuberculosis-specific cases across the full dataset – an achievement that reinforces its safety and reliability as a workflow automation tool. Marrying James Dyson's twin passions of technology and farming Omega aims to combat dry hair – the number one problem for women in the Middle East Fact: Dyson, a name that was once instantly associated with home appliances, now counts 50 per cent of its portfolio as beauty. In under a decade, its styling tools (launched in 2016) and hair products, have become synonymous with technology, luxury – and now, perhaps paradoxically, farming. Last year the buzz was about the debut of hair products – the brand's Wiltshire labs had conjured up haircare serums and creams using mushroom cells – Chitosan – as a key ingredient. Key to their success in the Middle East? The fact that they were made to keep frizz at bay, and tested at 80 per cent relative humidity. The half a billion dollars invested in hair care research in 2022 was finally reaping rewards. And this year the world's beauty journalists were whisked off to another secret location – and made to sign iron-clad NDAs – before the latest range of products was unveiled. This time the reveal was in Lincolnshire, where James Dyson's utopian vision of high-tech meets high-yield future of farming is being incubated under the Dyson Farming banner, which has ownership over 36,000 acres – the equivalent of over 20,000 football fields. And the problem the team were asked to solve? In a study done in 2022, one in three people stated their primary hair concern was dryness. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dyson Beauty (@dysonbeauty) 'It's something that women deal with globally,' Justina Mejia Montane, Product Development Director, told us, 'They're constantly on a quest to find a product that is going to be able to deliver on hydration, nourishing benefits, without compromising on texture and the aesthetics of the product.' Someone living in Dubai would still have dry hair. Not due to the humid climate but because of what they are doing to their tresses, from colouring to chemical treatments and intense heat – even brushing and swimming in chlorinated pools. The Middle East also has a higher mineral content in its water, so that dries the hair out even more. It makes the hair heavy. The problem to solve pin-pointed, Dyson's researchers, scientists, chemists, and mechanical engineers got to work. The fact that they had boots on the ground on the farm, provided the breakthrough: the 800,000 sunflowers that grow to over six-feet high over a nine-hectare field. Design Manager Ben Hogan explains, 'It all dovetailed beautifully. Sunflower seed oil was chock full of omega fatty acids, and that is actually an ingredient really beneficial for dry hair.' The team are really keen to differentiate the problem-solving ability of their products too. While Chitosan's specific purpose was style retention – especially for Airwrap owners – Omega is the second chapter of that story, putting the focus on heat protection (something that was raised repeatedly during the Chitosan launch). The two new heroes are the Omega hydrating hair oil, that nourishes and restores brittle hair and a leave-in conditioning spray that transforms from a cream in the bottle to a mist that covers hair quickly and evenly, reducing breakage by over 74 per cent. I can confirm that the new oil is intoxicating to use, and instantly makes the hair look – and feel – shinier, without the added weight and greasiness provided by most in-market products that rely heavily on silicone. Its subtle scent feels functional, yet pleasant. In a nutshell, you might not love it, but you certainly won't dislike it. The upshot? It works. The conditioning spray is even more of a revelation, easy to use, and instantly changing the texture of hair, re-perking it up, once you've mastered how much to use to suit its thickness. It's ideal for the region's climate – and for the local love of regular blow-dries. It certainly seems that Dyson's beauty products are now as transformative as their at-home hair styling tools.
