Mumbai CEO recalls crying after firing 25 employees ‘back-to-back': 'That day, I didn't feel like a leader'
Mumbai-based CEO and founder Sampark Sachdeva posted on LinkedIn how he felt when, years ago, he was asked to fire 25 people 'back-to-back.' He added that the management asked him to be 'cold' and not show any emotions.
Sachdeva did what he was asked, but he remembered each employee he had to fire, including a single mom, a father-of-two, and an individual who told him, 'Sir, you had hired me. You were here, so I stayed. Today, you are asking me to go, so I will go.'

An individual praised, 'Leadership isn't easy, that's for sure. Salute to you for carrying their faces with you and using that experience to advocate for compassion in the corporate world. Leadership is indeed about decisions, but it's also about empathy and understanding.' Another remarked, 'This is the hardest part that a leader has to go through with his/her team/employees. The person at the receiving end is upset, but the one who is conveying this message is brutally shattered inside and still has to sit with a poker face.'
A third expressed, 'I have been on both sides of the table, and I know exactly how heavy it feels. No matter how often you go through it, such situations are never easy. They stay with you — not just as professional experiences, but as human memories.'

Startups are choosing to stay private for longer amid higher interest rates and unpredictable market appetite for initial public offerings over the past few years. Capital is also available for larger late-stage rounds as private market investors sit on record levels of dry powder. OpenAI is also in talks to close an employee share sale, which would value the ChatGPT parent at around $500 billion, Reuters had reported earlier this month.

Ashvir Singh Johal becomes first Sikh coach of a football club in England, named Morecambe manager
Ashvir Singh Johal has become the first Sikh to coach a professional club in England after being named as first-team manager at fifth-tier Morecambe on Tuesday. The 30-year-old is also the youngest manager in the top-five tiers of English football. 'He arrives at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium with an excellent reputation as a forward thinking coach and leader, bringing a wealth of experience in player development, tactical innovation, and building high-performance cultures,' the club said. 'His appointment marks an exciting new era for the Shrimps as the Club continues its journey under fresh ownership and renewed ambition.' Johal, who worked at Leicester City's academy for 10 years and was part of Kolo Toure's coaching team at Wigan Athletic in the Championship in 2022, replaces Derek Adams, who left the club following the takeover by the Panjab Warriors consortium. The club is yet to play a game in the National League this season after being suspended because of its failure to meet financial obligations, including failing to pay staff and uncertainty about the ownership. Following the completion of the sale of the club by the Bond Group to London-based Panjab Warriors, that suspension has been lifted, meaning Johal can begin the task of trying to reverse the decline in the seaside town club's fortunes. 'The immediate priority right now is going to be to identify the players that we need in this building to ensure Morecambe Football Club can perform well in the National League,' he said. Johal completed his UEFA Pro Licence in June.

FedEx, IIT Madras launch SMART Centre for logistics innovation
US-based transportation company FedEx and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Tuesday inaugurated the FedEx SMART (supply chain modelling, algorithms, research and technology) Centre on the institute's by a five-year, $5 million (about Rs 44 crore) grant from FedEx, the centre aims to develop sustainable, technology-driven solutions for modern supply chains.'This centre is more than just a hub for research. It's a space where technology and talent come together with a shared purpose to shape what's next,' said Kami Viswanathan, president, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa, FedEx. 'By combining deep academic insight and global industry expertise, we can build smarter, more sustainable supply chains that create meaningful impact for all stakeholders.' Research at the centre will span interdisciplinary projects from carbon-neutral operations, autonomous delivery systems, electric vehicle infrastructure and predictive analytics to artificial intelligence (AI)-driven worker safety, with the goal of building platforms for capacity development and knowledge sharing. IIT Madras director V Kamakoti said, 'Sound and efficient logistics define the economy of a nation; the joint efforts taken by IIT Madras and FedEx will not only solve complex problems in logistics and supply chain but also address important human resources-related issues and related infrastructure.' The centre is positioned as a hub for national engagement and research excellence. It has already seen wide participation, with national competitions drawing more than 3,000 students, internships and research projects involving 40 students selected from more than 1,500 applicants, and at least 35 expert sessions connecting academia and industry. The centre is also supporting 17 new faculty proposals on themes including AI, sustainability and warehouse automation.
