Retailers Are All-In on AI - But Disconnected Data Threatens Progress
"Retailers are leveraging AI to deliver more adaptive, personalized customer experiences powered by high-quality, unified customer data,' said Tapan Patel, research director at IDC.
The survey of 1,000 retail professionals across marketing, IT, data and executive leadership reveals that 45% of retailers are already using AI daily or several times per week, and 97% plan to maintain or increase their AI investment in the coming year. However, only 11% say they're fully prepared to deploy AI tools at scale.
'Retailers believe in AI's potential to drive loyalty and lifetime value — but belief alone won't close the gap between ambition and execution,' said Tony Owens, CEO of Amperity. 'What's needed is unified, actionable customer data - regardless of where it resides. With Amperity's patented identity resolution, retailers can unify data without moving it, transforming fragmented records into complete customer profiles that fuel AI and measurable business results.'
Customer-Facing AI: The Missed Opportunity
While 63% of retailers believe AI will improve customer loyalty and 65% expect it to increase customer lifetime value, only 43% are currently using AI in customer-facing applications such as personalization, chatbots or tailored marketing experiences. In fact, just 23% are using AI in production to resolve customer identities or prepare data for marketing use, indicating significant untapped potential in customer engagement strategies.
CDPs Are Accelerating AI Maturity
Retailers with a customer data cloud (CDC) aren't just slightly ahead - they're moving at a different pace entirely:
60% of CDP-equipped retailers use AI daily or several times per week (vs. 29% without a CDP)
35% use AI in production to prepare data for marketing or analytics (vs. 9% without a CDP)
22% report full AI adoption across multiple business units (vs. 10%)
These retailers are also far more confident in their ability to understand and act on customer behavior, reinforcing the CDP's role as a critical enabler of enterprise AI strategy.
'This survey highlights a pivotal shift in retail: AI is moving decisively from experimentation to scaled execution. Retailers are leveraging AI to deliver more adaptive, personalized customer experiences powered by high-quality, unified customer data,' said Tapan Patel, research director at IDC. 'Retailers who integrate AI into core workflows—across supply chain, merchandising, and engagement—are setting the new standards for customer experience in an increasingly dynamic market.'
Data Gaps and Technical Barriers Persist
Despite high levels of optimism, the report reveals several key barriers:
58% of respondents say their customer data is fragmented or incomplete
46% cite high costs of AI tools as a top challenge
35% note limited technical expertise
Only 21% are 'very confident' in their ability to understand and act on customer data.
Amperity helps retailers close the gap between AI ambition and execution.
By unifying fragmented customer data, resolving identities with precision, and making insights accessible across the business, Amperity gives retailers the AI-ready foundation they need to move faster and compete smarter. China forms AI alliances to cut U.S. tech reliance — Huawei among companies seeking to create unified tech stack with domestic-powered standardization
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. China's artificial intelligence companies have launched two new strategic alliances aimed at developing AI technologies that rely on domestic standards, as well as integrating AI into industrial applications, at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, according to Reuters. The moves are designed to develop domestic AI standards and reduce reliance on American technologies as soon as possible. The first coalition is called the Model-Chip Ecosystem Innovation Alliance, which unites leading makers of AI hardware — such as Biren Technologies, Huawei, Enflame, and Moore Threads, among others — and developers of large language models, including StepFun. The goal of the alliance is to form a groundbreaking ecosystem that links the entire technology stack from hardware and AI models to supporting infrastructure. One of the focuses of the coalition is to streamline and localize the development of AI hardware and software amid a limited supply of foreign hardware, such as high-performance Nvidia GPUs. For now, it is too early to make guesses about what the Model-Chip Ecosystem Innovation Alliance can do and what it is capable of achieving. However, to have a chance of success, members of the group will have to seek standardization and interoperability. That said, expect the union to establish common protocols, interfaces, and frameworks between models, chips, and infrastructure to streamline development and reduce fragmentation within China's AI ecosystem. Chinese AI hardware companies use different architectures (Arm, PowerVR, custom instruction set architectures), which complicates low-level unification, so do not expect Huawei's CANN to support processors not developed by Huawei. However, developers can agree on standardized APIs and model formats, allowing LLMs trained by StepFun, or its competitors, to run across multiple backends with minimal friction. Also, companies can unify mid-level software stacks to enable model portability and compatibility across all local platforms. Developers will write models once (e.g., in PyTorch) and run them on any Chinese-made accelerator without major changes. In addition, this will promote a cohesive national AI ecosystem where all components — processors, compilers, frameworks, and tools — work together. In a unified environment, innovation can develop faster, and China's AI industry becomes more resilient and competitive on the global stage, which is when it will be able to compete against the American AI industry. The second initiative, known as the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce AI Committee, aims to help integrate AI more deeply into industrial applications. This alliance unites such hardware and software companies as Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX, MiniMax, and SenseTime, just to name a few. Essentially, the alliance will function as a bridge between AI developers and industrial players, ensuring that cutting-edge models and systems actively power China's industrial transformation. Both alliances are meant not only to create a self-sufficient AI ecosystem in China, but also to streamline its development as well as the adoption of AI by the industry. Boston Jury Hits Johnson & Johnson with Record $42M Verdict in Asbestos Baby Powder Case
Dean Omar Branham Shirley attorneys secure verdict by linking mesothelioma to asbestos in J&J talc products BOSTON, July 29, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A Boston jury has sided with Paul and Kathryn Lovell in a lawsuit against cosmetic behemoth Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) that asserted Mr. Lovell's mesothelioma was directly caused by the company's iconic, asbestos-laced baby powder. The jury awarded $42,609,300, making it what lawyers believe to be the largest mesothelioma verdict in Massachusetts history. During the two-week trial, jurors heard compelling arguments from Dean Omar Branham Shirley attorneys Aaron Chapman and Danny Kraft, who detailed how Johnson & Johnson and its affiliated entities knowingly concealed for decades the health risks associated with their talc products. The attorneys presented internal documents showing the company's awareness of asbestos contamination, its failure to adopt safer alternatives and systematic manipulation of scientific testing methods. The jury agreed that the company not only failed to warn consumers, but also actively misled the public and regulators by suppressing test results and spreading false assurances about product safety. "This verdict is not just about Paul Lovell. It's about every consumer who was told these products were safe," said Mr. Chapman. "For years, Johnson & Johnson ignored its own internal warnings and scientific evidence about the presence of asbestos in its talc. The jury has sent a strong message: Corporate misconduct will not be tolerated." Mr. Lovell, 69, and his wife have been married for 45 years. A father of four, he used Johnson's Baby Powder on himself and his children, trusting it was safe. They have lived in the same home in Melrose, Massachusetts, for decades. "Paul never worked in a factory, never used joint compound, and never had any occupational exposure to asbestos. Instead, like untold millions of Americans, he was a lifelong user of J&J's Baby Powder," said Mr. Kraft. "He trusted the product on himself and on his children." The jury found the company's actions amounted to negligence and breach of warranty. The Lovell family was also represented by Leslie-Anne Taylor of Thornton Law Firm LLP. The case is Paul Lovell and Kathryn Lovell v. Johnson & Johnson, Civil Action No. 21-2086, filed in Middlesex County Superior Court in Massachusetts. Dean Omar Branham Shirley, LLP, is a nationally recognized trial firm that handles cases across the country for individuals who have suffered catastrophic injuries or have died as a result of irresponsible conduct of others.
