Tesla drops "coming soon" teaser ahead of its expected India entry this month

Times of Oman3 days ago
New Delhi: Elon Musk-owned electric car company Tesla is finally entering India this month, the company announced on Friday, putting out a teaser on its India-focused X handle.
"Coming soon," reads the brief X post, attached with a graphic that indicates Tesla will be in India this month (July 2025).
Tesla is not interested in manufacturing in India; instead, they are opening showrooms here, Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy had indicated in early June.
In the later part of June, Kumaraswamy said Tesla is only interested in opening a showroom here in India. "They want to sell their car in India. There is no further development about Tesla," he had said.
Earlier, there were reports that Tesla was interested in importing Tesla cars into India and subsequently selling them through their showrooms in India. But Tesla has been tight-lipped all through on its India operations.
Early this year, Tesla Inc. officially began its hiring process in India, marking a significant step towards its long-anticipated entry into the domestic market. While Tesla had not provided an official timeline for its India launch, its active hiring had suggested that preparations were in full swing.
Tesla boss Musk had in past indicated that he was interested in investing in India, but "high import duty" structures were a bone of contention.
Tesla's intention to come into India had intensified after India announced its new EV policy, under which import duty was substantially reduced and many incentives were provided for wooing global EV carmakers.
In April this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the technology and innovation sectors. PM Modi had also met Musk this February in the US.

South Korean exporters urge new government for trade policy shift amid US Tariff risks

Seoul: South Korean exporters want new government to go for a strategic shift in the trade policy amid U.S. tariff risks, reveals a survey as reported by the Korea Herald. To maximize national interest and enhance industrial competitiveness, 20.7 per cent of 416 trade industry professionals surveyed on June 10-11 chose the implementation of a strategic trade policy. According to a report released by the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), the most frequently specified task cited under strategic trade policy was an active response to tariff risks posed by the United States. Jung Hee-chul, executive director of KITA's trade promotion division, said that, "The trade sector hopes the new administration will establish a stable trade environment, diversify technology-driven exports, and help SMEs shift toward export-led growth." He further added that, "We look forward to bold export policies that can overcome US-led tariff risks and rising protectionism to upgrade Korea's export momentum." The report by KITA further revealed that the level of uncertainty in global trade has intensified in recent years, primarily due to tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on key Korean exports such as steel and automobiles. This whole situation has led companies to ask for fairer export conditions to remain competitive globally. Additionally, other priorities quoted include fostering AI-powered export industries (9.5 per cent), enhancing trade security enforcement (7.5 per cent), and improving logistics security through increased use of Korea-flagged vessels (7 per cent). On the outlook side, about 43.3 per cent of respondents expect exports to decline by more than 5 per cent this year, while 38.9 per cent anticipate no major change and only 17.8 per cent foresee growth, reflecting a negative export outlook for 2025.

Opening India's dairy sector to US could cause Rs 1.03 lakh crore loss to dairy farmers: SBI Report

New Delhi: Opening India's dairy sector to US imports could result in an annual loss of Rs 1.03 lakh crore to Indian dairy farmers, according to a recent report by the State Bank of India (SBI). The report cautioned that the move would significantly impact the livelihoods of small dairy farmers, as the US dairy sector is heavily subsidized. SBI stated, "If the dairy sector is opened up, price of milk in India is likely to drop by at least 15 per cent which could cause potential annual loss of Rs 1.03 lakh crore to dairy farmers." The report pointed out that agriculture and dairy continue to be key sticking points in trade negotiations between India and the United States. One of the major concerns raised by SBI is the risk posed to the livelihood of Indian farmers if the dairy sector is opened up to US competition. This could also increase India's milk imports by approximately 25 million tonnes annually. The dairy sector in India plays a critical role in the rural economy, contributing about 2.5-3 per cent to the national Gross Value Added (GVA), which amounts to around Rs 7.5-9 lakh crore. It also provides direct employment to nearly 8 crore people, translating to one job for every Rs 1 lakh contributed to GVA. The report mentioned that a 15 per cent drop in milk prices would not only reduce farmer incomes but also weaken the sector's overall contribution to the economy. After accounting for the cost of inputs such as feed, fuel, transport, and unpaid family labour, the estimated GVA loss would be around Rs 0.51 lakh crore. However, the report also highlighted potential gains if India and the US strengthen trade ties in other areas. For instance, India currently exports less than USD 1 billion worth of high-value agricultural products such as organic food and spices to the US, but there is potential to expand this to over USD 3 billion based on US demand. Fruits and vegetables like mangoes, litchis, bananas, and okra could see higher exports if sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) bans are lifted. Additionally, the removal of non-tariff barriers could boost the export of Ayush products and generic medicines by USD 1-2 billion. Other benefits may include easier visa rules, increased outsourcing opportunities, US investments in cold storage and precision farming, and lower costs of agricultural inputs like feed, machinery, and veterinary products. The report concluded that while opening up the dairy sector could lead to broader economic and strategic cooperation with the US, the adverse impact on millions of Indian farmers should not be ignored.

IPL valuation hits $18.5 bn, up 12.9%, fuelled by media rights, sponsors, and fan engagement

New Delhi: The business valuation of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has surged an unprecedented USD 18.5 billion, marking a 12.9 per cent increase over the past year. According to the latest edition of analysis by Houlihan Lokey, valued at Rs 1.56 lakh crore in Indian currency, this growth underscores the IPL's status as one of the most lucrative sports leagues in the world. The global investment bank listed on the NYSE stated that the brand value of IPL increased 13.8 per cent in 2025, reaching USD 3.9 billion (equivalent to Rs 32,721 crore, reflecting a 16.1 per cent increase year over year in INR terms). The firm's analysis added that the growth of IPL underscores the league's expanding commercial appeal, global reach, and deepening fan engagement, particularly in the digital domain. For perspective, brand value represents the monetary worth of an intangible asset, which typically encompasses elements such as the trade name, trademark, and associated goodwill. It is important to note that brand value is a subset of a company's or entity's overall business value, which includes tangible assets, operational revenues, and other intangibles. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has evolved into a multibillion-dollar enterprise, consistently ranking among the most valuable sports leagues globally. Its influence extends far beyond the field, shaping broadcasting standards, fan engagement strategies, and franchise-based models that are now being emulated worldwide. The firm added that the 2025 IPL season exemplified the league's resilience and operational agility. Despite a temporary suspension due to geopolitical tensions in early May, the tournament resumed swiftly, backed by robust contingency planning and stakeholder coordination, the analysis added. The IPL continues to set benchmarks in sports business. Franchise valuations have soared, media rights deals have reached record highs, and brand partnerships have diversified across sectors. The top franchisees clock Rs 6,500 million to Rs 7,000 million in annual revenues, with up to 80 per cent visibility secured before the start of the tournament. On the cost side, the presence of a salary cap (Rs 1,200 million per team) functions as an embedded margin protector, preventing wage inflation (a major concern for global sports teams) and ensuring competitive parity among teams. Moreover, franchisees operate with minimal fixed-asset exposure, benefitting from ready access to stadium infrastructure already created by BCCI, translating into a capital-light model with structurally high return on employed capital. When benchmarked against global peers like EPL and NBA teams that wrestle with high player transfer fees, variable wages, and high stadium operating costs (including servicing stadium debt), IPL franchisees operate with an asset-light, revenue-guaranteed model, a structure that not only cushions downside risk but also amplifies operating leverage on the upside. "For institutional investors, this makes the IPL not just a sports league but a high-growth compounder in the entertainment space, catering to a fast-growing fan base with rising disposable income and a strong appetite for premium digital experiences," the study stated. Going further, the study observed that Bengaluru (RCB) triumphed over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a final that shattered viewership records. The title clash drew over 600 million views on JioCinema, reaffirming the IPL's status as not only India's premier sporting event but also one of the world's most-watched broadcast spectacles.
