GainingEdge Appoints Steen Jakobsen as CEO

Skift2 days ago
After more than a year of interim leadership, GainingEdge may have found its long-term captain. Steen Jakobsen's arrival could bring stability for the consultancy's next chapter.
Tourism and business events consultancy GainingEdge has appointed Steen Jakobsen as its next CEO, ending a 17-month interim period and signaling a new phase in the firm's leadership.
Jakobsen held prominent roles at the Copenhagen Convention Bureau, leading the organization for 7 years. He later served almost a decade as Vice President of Dubai Business Events, where he oversaw the destination's international meetings growth and helped launch the Dubai Association Centre. Most recently, he stepped away from the events industry, taking the role of chief financial officer at Danish biopharmaceutical company Tetra Pharm Technologies.
Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, GainingEdge consults for destination management organizations. It helps destinations develop business events strategies, including creating new convention bureaus, and providing operational consulting to major convention centers.
Recent clients include the national destination marketing organizations promoting Malaysia, Macao, Japan, Sarawak (Malaysia), South Africa, Panama, and Canada, as well as projects with Neom in Saudi Arabia and the China National Convention Center in Beijing, China. The company also manages the BestCities Global Alliance, a network of 13 major cities with significant presence at industry events.
The appointment marks a new chapter in GainingEdge's leadership evolution. Founder Gary Grimmer, a former chair of Destinations International and a 2014 inductee into its Hall of Fame, served as CEO for the firm's first 15 years before moving into the role of executive chairman and strategic advisor. Grimmer previously led the Melbourne Convention & Visitor Bureau for seven years and held leadership roles at Travel Portland and the Albuquerque Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Jon Sivertson led GainingEdge from 2019 through early 2024, steering it through the pandemic and achieving record financial performance. Senior partner Mike Williams has served as acting CEO since March 2024.
Jakobsen's arrival is expected to give GainingEdge the long-term leadership it has sought since early 2024 and position the consultancy for continued global expansion.

Kyivstar Hopes to Shine in New York as Ukraine Peace Talks Begin

Shares in Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar will start trading in New York today hoping that peace talks to end the devastating war in the country will significantly boost the company's value. Chief executive officer Oleksandr Komarov said ahead of the Nasdaq listing that the summit between President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska, scheduled for August 15 th, would help drive investment into Ukraine if an end to the three-year war is found. Invest in Recovery 'We will be the best asset for the international investment community to invest in Ukraine, to invest in the Ukrainian recovery, to invest in the Ukrainian support,' Komarov said. Komarov said the company chose Nasdaq, where its Dubai-based parent VEON (VEON) is also listed, over London or Warsaw because it is even more important to 'strengthen the link between the United States and Ukraine rather than between Ukraine and Europe.' VEON shares were up 1.6% in pre-market trading. The company has also strengthened its U.S. ties during the conflict, appointing former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to its board and signing a deal with Elon Musk's Starlink for satellite services. Kyivstar, which has been given a pro forma valuation of $2.3 billion, carried out the listing by merging with fintech entrepreneur Betsy Cohen's Cohen Circle special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The company raised $178 million, confirming earlier reports that it expected up to $200 million. VEON will retain a majority stake in the mobile operator. People's IPO The company has previously stated that it has had extremely strong support for the Kyivstar listing from U.S. authorities, Ukraine and the European Union. Indeed, it has described the listing as 'the people's IPO', hoping that investors around the world would show their support for Ukraine. Kyivstar is the market-leading mobile operator in Ukraine with 24 million subscribers. Analysts agreed that the narrative around the deal was built around Ukraine's postwar reconstruction and digital infrastructure's role in that recovery. However, investors will also likely question the strength of that recovery and the likelihood of any peace deal between Ukraine and Russia holding over the long-term.

After Nearly 30 Years of Service, Greentrike CEO to Pass the Torch

Tanya Durand, Greentrike CEO, Will Retire in February 2026. Greentrike Begins Search for Next Leader. 'It has been a true honor to serve my community through my work. As I step down, I am deeply confident in my colleagues' ability to carry Greentrike's mission forward with the same heart and vision.'— Tanya Durand, Greentrike CEO TACOMA, WA, UNITED STATES, August 16, 2025 / / -- Greentrike shared today that CEO Tanya Durand, who has served the organization for 29 years, will retire effective February 2026. Over nearly three decades, Tanya has played a transformative role in advancing Greentrike's mission to honor children and youth and champion play. Tanya will leave the organization with a legacy of excellence in early learning, groundbreaking access programs, and a focus on centering children and youth in Pierce County. Tanya first joined Greentrike in 1996, when the organization was then known as the Children's Museum of Tacoma. Her unwavering commitment to access led to the creation of Pay As You Will, the donation-only admission model first among children's museums, which has served over a million visitors since 2012. Greentrike experienced remarkable growth during Tanya's visionary tenure as CEO, expanding the Children's Museum of Tacoma to its third and largest location, creating the first children's museum for military families on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and launching Play to Learn across Pierce County. 'It has been a true honor to serve my community through my work at Greentrike,' said CEO Tanya Durand. 'As a child, I dreamt of working at a children's museum because I wanted to bring the same joy and wonder I found on each of my visits to children in my community. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to live that dream, and I'm proud of what we've accomplished together at Greentrike. As I step down, I am deeply confident in my colleagues' ability to carry Greentrike's mission forward with the same heart and vision.' The transition comes at a time of growth for Greentrike following the organization's most successful Right to Play Gala, record-breaking event attendance, and expansions in Play to Learn and the Monarch Diaper Bank. Under Tanya's leadership, the organization has built a deeply capable and dedicated team of professionals who will continue to guide day-to-day operations with care and expertise. Succession planning has been deliberate and thorough, ensuring continuity in both mission and momentum. Greentrike remains grounded in its values, and the Board of Directors is confident in the organization's ability to move forward with clarity and purpose as the search for the new CEO begins. 'We are deeply grateful to Tanya for her visionary leadership and enduring impact on the children and families in our community,' said AJ Treleven, Chair of the Board of Directors. 'Greentrike is well equipped to deliver the high-quality service and programs it has become known for. Our exceptional leadership team and the staff are poised to carry out our mission as we conduct a rigorous, thoughtful, and inclusive search for our next CEO.' The Board of Directors has partnered with a national search firm specializing in nonprofit and museum leadership to identify Greentrike's future CEO. Tanya and the current leadership team will continue guiding day-to-day operations throughout the transition. More updates will be shared as the search progresses and a successor is selected.
