Alex Cora takes ownership after another Red Sox loss: ‘At one point, it has to be on me'
BOSTON — Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora usually keeps the same steady tone after wins and after losses. To him, it's necessary throughout a long season not to read too much into one game.
Not Tuesday.
After the team's major-league leading 17th one-run loss this season, a 4-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels in 10 innings, Cora didn't hold back his frustration.

'We keep making the same mistakes, we're not getting better,' Cora said. 'At one point, it has to be on me, I guess, right? I'm the manager. I got to keep pushing them to get better. They're not getting better. They're not. We keep making the same mistakes.
'I'm being very honest about it. Very open about it,' he continued. 'You get frustrated, but at one point it's like, 'OK, what are we going to do? What's going to change?' Because we keep doing the same thing, same thing. We can keep talking about one-run losses, we have what, 17? It's the same thing. Is it effort? Preparation? Attention to detail? I have no idea, man. I watched that game tonight and was like, 'Wow this is real.' It's frustrating.'
The visceral emotion from Cora was rare for the manager in his seventh season at the helm, a manager who just signed a three-year contract extension last summer. But the brutal nature of the way the team has lost so often this season has compounded the frustrations.
The team's defense, which had been better of late, regressed on Tuesday with three errors. It marked their 16th multi-error game of the season and 10th such game at Fenway Park. With 53 errors, they surpassed Colorado for the most in the majors.
Ceddanne Rafaela's wild throw home in the third inning moved runners into scoring position, allowing two extra runs to score. Kristian Campbell botched a grounder later in the game and reliever Zack Kelly couldn't field a ball cleanly off the mound in extra innings.
'What you saw today, routine groundballs for double plays we don't turn, we throw to the wrong bases, we miss cutoff guys, PFPs (pitcher fielding plays) were horrible,' Cora said. 'So there's a lot of bad right now.'
Starter Brayan Bello pitched six innings for the first time since May 2 after a month of awful starts. He allowed three runs, but the offense couldn't bail him out.

Jarren Duran hit an RBI double in the third and Rafaela's two-run homer in the sixth tied the score 3-3, but there was little else to show from there.
In the 10th, Kelly, who was recalled earlier in the day as reliever Nick Burdi went on the injury list with a foot contusion, was ineffective.
Kelly loaded the bases, and the Angels scored the go-ahead run on a ground-ball double play.
Despite 10 hits on the night, Cora lamented the chances the Red Sox gave the Angels.
'Missed the cutoff guy, they score two, we hit the eighth hitter, we walk the ninth hitter, we didn't execute a bunt play, we didn't advance when we needed to,' the manager said. 'You can talk about chances. I can tell you the chances we gave the opposition. We were lucky to be in that game at the end, to be honest with you.'
The Red Sox now sit at 29-34, their most games below .500 on the season. They're 10 games back of first place in the American League East.
Asked where the team could go from here, a listless Cora didn't have many answers.
'Show up tomorrow. Show up tomorrow, that's all we can do,' he said.

Grizzlies' Zach Edey will have surgery after re-spraining his left ankle
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey has sprained his left ankle again and the team said Saturday that the All-Rookie team selection will need surgery. The Grizzlies said the 7-foot-3 Edey was working out this week when he injured the ankle again. Imaging revealed excessive ligamentous laxity, which will be addressed with surgery that will also restabilize his ankle. The two-time national player of the year at Purdue missed 12 games early in the season because of a sprained left ankle. He went on to play in 66 games, making 55 starts, and averaged 9.2 points and a rookie-leading 8.3 rebounds. The Grizzlies said a preliminary timeline for recovery will be provided after surgery and that Edey is expected to make a full recovery. ___ AP NBA:

Surprise Video Shows Prince Harry and His Kids at Disneyland—But One Princess Lilibet Moment Made Me Do a Double Take
We don't often get an unfiltered glimpse of Prince Harry these days—but this week, Meghan Markle shared an Instagram reel that gave us something close: a two-day Disneyland trip for daughter Lilibet's fourth birthday, complete with princess meet-and-greets, rides, cake and a surprisingly normal snapshot of family life. The video is cheerful and tightly edited, set to Peggy Lee's 'It's a Good Day.' We see Harry laughing on Space Mountain, grinning through Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and trailing the kids around Cars Land in a backwards cap. Faces are covered with heart emojis, but there's enough to piece together who's who. Then comes the moment that made me do a double-take. Captured by Meghan Markle via Instagram Mid-reel, Meghan leads the kids into a Frozen-themed meet-and-greet. In a later shot, Lilibet—red hair, blue cap, floral dress—is seen holding hands with Elsa. Meghan's in mouse ears. Harry's filming. And suddenly, you're watching a real princess meet a fake one. Fans called it 'a full-circle fairytale,' but really, it's just a four-year-old's birthday party—with slightly more security. To that end, the real magic may not have been at Disneyland at all. In a quieter moment from the same week, Meghan posted a snapshot of Harry and Lilibet walking barefoot through a palm-lined path—her hand steady in his. 'Daddy's little girl and favorite adventurer,' she wrote. Because at the end of the day, Meghan may be the princess, but Harry is the ultimate girl dad. 49ers WR problem highlighted in PFF list of best QB-pass catcher duos
The San Francisco 49ers have a potential problem lingering with their receiving corps, and it was underscored in a list of every team's top QB-WR/TE duos created by Pro Football Focus. San Francisco's duo features tight end George Kittle paired with quarterback Brock Purdy. They landed at No. 14 on the list. The 49ers are one of only three teams with a tight end listed alongside the QB, joining the Arizona Cardinals (No. 17) and the Las Vegas Raiders (No. 20). Advertisement It's not a great sign for the 49ers' passing game that they don't have a receiver worthy of making the list. Brandon Aiyuk's knee injury continues leaving a sizable question mark over his potential contributions in 2025. Last year's first-round pick Ricky Pearsall also dealt with injuries in training camp before a gunshot wound he sustained in a robbery attempt the week before the regular season sidelined him for the first six weeks. He had flashes last year, but he's still a largely unproven commodity. Jauan Jennings led the team's WRs last season with 975 yards, but he still profiles as more of a secondary pass-catching option than a primary one. If the 49ers are going to have a sustainable, championship-caliber passing attack, they're going to need to find more consistent, legitimate production from their receiving corps. Advertisement On the other hand, part of the reason Kittle is listed with Purdy instead of any of the club's receivers is that Kittle is still an outstanding player. Via PFF: Purdy's 134.5 passer rating when targeting Kittle over the past two seasons ranks first among the quarterback-receiver duos on this list. They also have more than 2,100 yards together during that time. Purdy and Kittle have established an incredible connection, which has stood true in both high- and low-volume situations. Kittle has had a career resurgence since Purdy took over as the starting QB. From 2020-22 he didn't have a 1,000-yard season, but he's had more than 1,000 in each of Purdy's full seasons as a starter. He also set a career-high with 11 touchdowns in 2022 thanks in part to seven TDs over the final four weeks of that season with Purdy under center. Those seven touchdowns would've been a career-high for a whole season. In 2023 Kittle hauled in six TDs, which tied his previous career-high, and in 2024 he pulled down eight TDs -- the second-most in his career. The 49ers can get by if Kittle continues producing at an All-Pro level. They'll still need to find production from their receiving corps, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if Kittle is the team's leading receiver with another 1,000-yard campaign.
