Chris Mannix: In trade pursuits, Ime Udoka ‘a real asset' for Rockets

USA Today31-05-2025
Chris Mannix: In trade pursuits, Ime Udoka 'a real asset' for Rockets Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix on the NBA's 2025 offseason trade market: 'Every player wants to play for Ime Udoka. That's a real asset that the Rockets have.'
Entering the 2025-26 season, the Houston Rockets have the foundation of a relatively young and improving team that finished 2024-25 with the NBA's fourth-best record (52-30, No. 2 in the Western Conference).
That's led many to speculate that Houston could be very desirable to any star players who might come available on the offseason trade market.
But there's another potential reason for that desirability. On Friday's The Rich Eisen Show, NBA insider Chris Mannix (of Sports Illustrated) made the case:
Every player in the league loves (head coach) Ime Udoka. Every player wants to play for Ime Udoka. That's a real asset that the Rockets have.
Mannix went on to name Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics, and Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns as All-Star-level players who could be targets. Brown and Durant each have previous experience playing for Udoka, with Durant's stint coming when Udoka was an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets.
Udoka was a finalist for the NBA's 2024-25 Coach of the Year award.
'The team that I'm still watching the closest is going to be Houston,' Mannix said of his offseason outlook. 'Can Houston make a play for Giannis? I'm sure they would love to.'

Wilyer Abreu optimistic he will avoid injured list after leaving game with right calf tightness

After the game, Abreu was optimistic he would avoid an IL stint, though he said he would likely miss the Sox' upcoming two-game series against the Orioles. '[I felt] a little bit tight. I felt a cramp,' Abreu said through a translator. 'So right now I'm day to day. [I will have] to see how I wake up tomorrow, how it evolves, and hopefully I'll be ready. I'll take probably two or three days and be ready for New York [next weekend].' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Prior to departing the game, Abreu had been one of Boston's lone bright spots against Miami starter Janson Junk , getting the Sox on the board with a two-run homer in the fourth and also getting on base with a single in the seventh. Advertisement Abreu has been in a groove in recent weeks, batting .300 with a .860 OPS and 14 RBI in his last 16 games dating to July 28. On the season, his 22 home runs lead the team and his 69 RBI are second. Were Abreu to miss more time, the Sox outfield would likely look just as it did after he exited Sunday's game — with Jarren Duran in left, Ceddanne Rafaela in center, and Roman Anthony in right. Advertisement Garcia at first for Worcester As the Sox continue to explore potential depth options at first base, one name to watch is 22-year-old prospect Jhostynxon Garcia . Garcia, a natural outfielder ranked No. 3 in the Sox' system by MLB Pipeline, began taking ground balls at first base earlier this month, and made his first professional start at the position on Sunday for Triple A Worcester. Garcia has been the Worcester's best hitter since his promotion in mid-May, slashing 309/.372/.578 with 17 home runs in 286 plate appearances entering Sunday. But with the Sox big league outfield already overcrowded, first base could offer Garcia another path to the majors — perhaps as soon as this season. That's especially true with first baseman Toro batting just .183 with a .536 OPS since the All-Star break and just .238 with a .638 OPS since the beginning of June. Bregman gets day off Alex Bregman was out of the lineup Sunday for the first time since July 30 against the Twins. Manager Alex Cora said it was a routine rest day, and Bregman wound up entering in the seventh inning following Abreu's injury … Kristian Campbell started in center field for Worcester Sunday, his first time starting there since returning to the minors in mid-June. Campbell has mostly played first base and second base during his Triple A stint, but played seven games in center in the majors earlier this season … Sunday concluded 'Players' Weekend,' a special three-day event across MLB in which players were encouraged to customize their accessories with exotic colors and designs that showcased their personalities. Among the most unique designs included Bregman's bat which featured drawings by his 3-year-old son, Knox , and Anthony's 'Roman Empire' themed bat which had a silver emperor's mask on the barrel. Security tackles baseball fan after he ran onto field, interrupting Astros-Orioles game

A baseball fan interrupted a game between the Houston Astros and the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon at Daikin Park. A video obtained by Fox News Digital showed the fan reached the pitcher's mound and ran around the infield before security guards finally reached him and tackled him to the ground. The fan was taken out of the stadium in handcuffs. It was the most excitement Astros fans saw throughout the day as Houston fell to Baltimore 12-0. Orioles pitchers Dean Kremer, Grant Wolfram and Corbin Martin held Astros batters to six hits. Kremer had seven strikeouts in seven innings. He allowed only three hits and walked one. Wolfram and Martin came into the game to put the game away. Kremer threw 114 pitches. Astros catcher Yainer Diaz was 2-for-4 but struck out twice. He was the only Astros player who had a multi-hit game. The Orioles jumped on Cristian Javier early and Shawn Dubin when he came into the game. Four runs in the fifth and five runs in the eighth were more than enough for the Orioles to win the game. Baltimore third baseman Jordan Westburg was 4-for-4 in the game with five RBI. He hit a three-run home run off Dubin in the fifth inning. Gunner Henderson, Adley Rutschman and Sam Basallo each had two RBI. The Orioles improved to 57-67 with the win and Houston fell to 69-55.

Jordan Westburg's career-best 5 RBIs power Orioles to 12-0 rout of Astros

HOUSTON (AP) — Jordan Westburg hit a three-run homer among four hits with a career-best five RBIs and Dean Kremer pitched seven sharp innings to give the Baltimore Orioles a 12-0 win over the Houston Astros on Sunday. Kremer (9-9) allowed just three singles and struck out seven. Grant Wolfram and Corbin Martin finished the six-hitter. The Astros were shut out for the second time this series after Brandon Young came within four outs of a perfect game in Baltimore's 7-0 win Friday night. Westburg hit an opposite-field shot to right-center off Shawn Dubin in the fifth to make it 5-0. He added RBI singles in the seventh and eighth. His four hits matched a career high. Houston starter Cristian Javier (1-1) left with an illness after allowing one run in three innings. The Astros used five relievers before outfielder Chas McCormick threw a scoreless ninth in his second pitching appearance this week. The bases were loaded in the third when Jesús Sánchez robbed Gunnar Henderson of a grand slam with a leaping catch into the seats in right field. Jeremiah Jackson scored on the sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Sánchez robbed another homer in the seventh with two on when he reached into the seats to snag a fly ball hit by Samuel Basallo, who was making his major league debut. Basallo, the Orioles' top prospect, drove in two runs with a single in Baltimore's five-run eighth. Key moment There was a brief delay in the top of the eighth when a fan jumped onto the field and ran around before being tackled by security, handcuffed and escorted off the field. Key stat Dubin has allowed 11 hits and 11 runs over 2 2/3 innings in his last three appearances. Up next Orioles LHP Trevor Rogers (5-2, 1.43 ERA) opposes Red Sox RHP Dustin May (7-8, 4.67) Monday night in the opener of a two-game series at Boston. Houston RHP Spencer Arrighetti (1-3, 6.38) faces Detroit RHP Jack Flaherty (6-12, 4.76) as the Astros visit the Tigers Monday night. ___ AP MLB:
