Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills and Gladys Knight to reign on the Queens Tour

Yahoo19-03-2025
NEW YORK — Barclays Center will hold a royal court when four of the best R&B vocalists of all time bring the Queens Tour to Brooklyn on May 24.
Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Chaka Khan and Gladys Knight will join fellow Grammy winners Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills as co-headliners of the national trek announced on Tuesday by the Black Promoters Collective.
Officially billed as 'The Queens: Four Legends, One Stage,' the first leg of the tour will hit 11 cities in May and June, before picking up more dates this summer.
Ticket presales begin at 10 a.m. on March 20 on BPCtickets.com, with general sales starting the following day.
'Music is about connection, and this will be a celebration of the joy, power, and love that it brings to us all,' 71-year-old Khan said in a statement. 'Sharing the stage with my amazing sisters is an absolute honor.'
Meanwhile, Mills — who made a triumphant return to Broadway last year in 'Hadestown' — promised fans an 'electrifying' show.
'Our different styles unite in love, compassion and understanding and it's important to come together now,' said the 67-year-old Brooklyn native. 'We can't wait to see you.'
LaBelle, who still tours regularly at age 80 — with recent stops at New York area venues like the Kings Theatre and NJPAC — also shared her excitement to join 'these icons, who I call sisters.'
Knight, also 80, praised the 'best sisters a woman could be blessed with,' saying they'll be coming together 'in support of one another and in harmony at a time when love is most needed.'

Gladys Knight fires back at son's abuse claims with legal threats

Gladys Knight denied claims her son made over the status of her well-being. The "Midnight Train to Georgia" singer's son, Shanga Hankerson, accused Knight's husband, William McDowell, of mental and financial abuse, and told People magazine that he filed a complaint with authorities in North Carolina. Despite his allegations, Knight, 81, confirmed to Fox News Digital that she's "doing very well" while on the road with Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills as part of "The Queens" tour. "I'm sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented," Knight said in a statement. "I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right?" She added, "I'm healthy and happy and visiting friends and family these last few months. I'm excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with 'The Queens Tour' – see you soon." Hankerson told People magazine that he filed a complaint with the Department of Human Services in Buncombe County, North Carolina earlier this month due to what he claimed was McDowell's mental and financial abuse over his mother. "I did my best to give [McDowell] the space to play the role of husband and do what was in my mom's best interest, and he has not done that," Hankerson said. "Why is she working? Why is she in this situation where she's being made to believe that she has to work like this? That's really my issue with it." Shanga, 49, is Knight's son with music executive Barry Hankerson. Knight married her third husband, William McDowell, in 2001. The music legend's publicist doubled down against accusations that Gladys was unwell, and told Fox News Digital that the allegations were "unfounded." "Gladys and her team are greatly saddened by Shanga's unfounded allegations, especially as he has had no substantial contact with her," Laura Herlovich said. "She has not been on tour since June 1st and can't wait to begin touring again in September." Herlovich added, "At this time our lawyers have no choice but to explore any and all legal remedies due to Shanga's defamatory comments." Hankerson told People magazine, "They can say what they want. If her health has been misrepresented then supply evidence of reliable and verifiable, expert medical opinion that will stake their practice and reputation on their claim to the contrary."

Gladys Knight, 81, Speaks Out After Son Accuses Her Younger Husband Of Elder Abuse

Gladys Knight has assured fans her mental health is just fine after some concerns sparked by her son. Source: Maury Phillips/BET / Getty The soul music legend is speaking out after her eldest son, Shanga Hankerson, claimed his mother was facing elder abuse from her much-younger husband, William McDowell. According to Knight, those claims couldn't be further from the truth. 'I'm sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented,' she said in a statement, per The Post . 'I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right?' The songstress continued, 'I'm healthy and happy and visiting friends and family these last few months. I'm excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with The Queens Tour. See you soon.' In addition to Knight's statement, her publicist, Laura Herlovich, also debunked the rumors, telling the outlet that the legendary singer and her team are 'greatly saddened by Shanga's unfounded allegations, especially as he has had no substantial contact with her.' She added, 'At this time our lawyers have no choice but to explore any and all legal remedies due to Shanga's defamatory comments.' Knight's rebuttal came after Hankerson, 49, claimed that his mother was being subjected to elder abuse at the hands of McDowell. He made such claims during an interview with The Shade Room , alleging McDowell was forcing Knight to tour despite her declining health. 'I did my best to give [McDowell] the space to play the role of husband and do what was in my mom's best interest, and he has not done that,' he alleged at the time. 'Why is she working? Why is she in this situation where she's being made to believe that she has to work like this? That's really my issue with it.' Hankerson went on to recall a time when the 'Every Beat of My Heart' singer allegedly 'zoned out' while performing with her band. 'The band played about two or three extra bars. And she zoned out. The background singer started singing … and that brought her back,' Hankerson explained. 'They're having to rewind the teleprompters because my mom is forgetting to even look at them.' Knight and McDowell, who is reportedly 33 years younger than the soul singer, got married in 2001. In addition to Shanga, who she shares with music executive Barry Hankerson, the seven-time Grammy winner also has daughter Kenya Newman, 62, and late son James Newman III with her first ex-husband, James Newman. Knight was also married to Shanga's father, Barry, from 1974 to 1979; and former Ohio representative Les Brown, from 1995 to 1997.
