Gladys Knight, 81, Speaks Out After Son Accuses Her Younger Husband Of Elder Abuse
The soul music legend is speaking out after her eldest son, Shanga Hankerson, claimed his mother was facing elder abuse from her much-younger husband, William McDowell. According to Knight, those claims couldn't be further from the truth.
'I'm sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented,' she said in a statement, per The Post . 'I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right?'
The songstress continued, 'I'm healthy and happy and visiting friends and family these last few months. I'm excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with The Queens Tour. See you soon.'
In addition to Knight's statement, her publicist, Laura Herlovich, also debunked the rumors, telling the outlet that the legendary singer and her team are 'greatly saddened by Shanga's unfounded allegations, especially as he has had no substantial contact with her.'
She added, 'At this time our lawyers have no choice but to explore any and all legal remedies due to Shanga's defamatory comments.'
Knight's rebuttal came after Hankerson, 49, claimed that his mother was being subjected to elder abuse at the hands of McDowell. He made such claims during an interview with The Shade Room , alleging McDowell was forcing Knight to tour despite her declining health.
'I did my best to give [McDowell] the space to play the role of husband and do what was in my mom's best interest, and he has not done that,' he alleged at the time. 'Why is she working? Why is she in this situation where she's being made to believe that she has to work like this? That's really my issue with it.'
Hankerson went on to recall a time when the 'Every Beat of My Heart' singer allegedly 'zoned out' while performing with her band.
'The band played about two or three extra bars. And she zoned out. The background singer started singing … and that brought her back,' Hankerson explained. 'They're having to rewind the teleprompters because my mom is forgetting to even look at them.'
Knight and McDowell, who is reportedly 33 years younger than the soul singer, got married in 2001.
In addition to Shanga, who she shares with music executive Barry Hankerson, the seven-time Grammy winner also has daughter Kenya Newman, 62, and late son James Newman III with her first ex-husband, James Newman.
Knight was also married to Shanga's father, Barry, from 1974 to 1979; and former Ohio representative Les Brown, from 1995 to 1997.

'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' Washington said to Complex . 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I'm not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. I'm not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good.' Washington also made it clear that he doesn't give a hootennay about being canceled, nor will he be playing the social media game at his age. In an interview with Complex , he let it be known that he never signed up for all the fanfare. 'What made public support so important to begin with?' he said. 'I don't care who's following who. Frances Tiafoe, Madison Keys among star-studded pairings in new-look US Open mixed doubles event
When it came to finding a partner for the newly formatted mixed doubles event at this year's U.S. Open, it seemed like a no-brainer for World No. 6-ranked Madison Keys. The reigning Australian Open champion is partnered with Frances Tiafoe, with whom Keys shares an almost sibling-like relationship. 'It was pretty easy. When they announced the new format and all of the things, he was kind of the first person that popped into my head,' Keys told The Post. 'I've known him for many, many years. We lived in the same apartment building for a very long time, and I feel like I basically had to try to keep him alive. I just really enjoy being around him. I really like giving him s–t and just kind of poking fun at him. And I feel like he's also obviously a phenomenal tennis player. The tournament begins Tuesday with a field that was shrunk from 32 to 16 and includes some of tennis' top players in the world, including 10 major singles champions and a combined 54 Grand Slam titles among them. Carlos Alcaraz is playing with Emma Raducanu; Venus Williams will play with Reilly Opelka; and Jessica Pegula is teaming up with Jack Draper, to name a few. Jannik Sinner is slated to play with Katerina Siniakova, but after Sinner retired from the Cincinnati Open final on Monday due to illness, there is some question whether he'll still compete in the mixed doubles in Queens. The mixed doubles will take place over a two-day period — the first two rounds will be held Tuesday, followed by the semifinals and final Wednesday — all at Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong stadium, with the winning pair taking home a $1 million shared prize. The new format hasn't come without its critics, in particular, those deemed doubles specialists, who are missing out on getting to play in the revamped tournament. Sem Verbeek, the Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, told BBC that his 'heart is bleeding' over the format change for the U.S. Open event. While the superstar pairings will draw more attention, it leaves a lot of doubles specialists missing out on competing. 'I'm not going to actively root against it for it not to be a success,' he said. 'The positive I can think of is that there's going to be more people that can see the top single stars earlier in the tournament when they are maybe a bit more accessible to the public. But as a doubles athlete, my heart is bleeding.'
