Miracle Titans comeback eases some pressure on Hasler
Gold Coast have pulled off a remarkable comeback in Newcastle, coming from 20 points down to beat the Knights 24-20 and alleviate some pressure on coach Des Hasler.
Days after it emerged a clause in Hasler's contract could leave him axed if the Titans missed the finals, Gold Coast were all heart on Friday night.
Staring down the barrel of a sixth straight loss, the Titans looked set for another thrashing when they fell 20-0 down inside 27 minutes.
But captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui stood tall and Phillip Sami and AJ Brimson bagged doubles to claim a most unlikely victory.

The only concern for the Titans will be a cloud now hanging over Fa'asuamaleaui, which has the potential to leave him banned for State of Origin I.
Fa'asuamaleaui was placed on report for dangerous contact in the first minute of the match, after a head clash with Knights prop Leo Thompson.
If the Queensland forward incurs a grade-two charge or worse, unless he beats it at the judiciary he would miss the Origin series opener.
That incident aside, Fa'asuamaleaui is virtually carrying his club.
The Titans captain got through 70 minutes on Friday night, totalled 241 metres, made 39 tackles while breaking four, and threw five offloads.
And most crucially, he produced the key play that swung the match for the Titans.
With Gold Coast going nowhere, the lock threw an offload to allow Jayden Campbell to put the Titans on the front foot.
On the next play Fa'asuamaleaui again got his hands on the ball and Campbell touched it twice before throwing a long cut-out ball for Sami to score.

Sami reduced the margin to 20-12 early in the second half when Jaylan De Groot put a long cut out ball on his chest for the winger to nab his second.
It was back to 20-18 with 13 minutes left when Alofiana Khan-Pereira did superbly well to offload back for Brimson's first try.
And with time ticking down, Brimson was ruled to be marginally onside when he chased down an on-the-run grubber from Khan-Pererira to give the Titans the lead with two minutes to play.
Gold Coast's win left them equal on points with Newcastle, whose left edge fired early on Friday night before the second-half collapse.
While five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe bagged a double to go with last week's hat-trick, poor handling meant the Knights had no good ball in the second half.
They made eight errors after the break, didn't have a play-the-ball on the Titans' line, and eventually ran out of puff in the home-ground capitulation.
Adding to the woes will be a knee injury suffered by strike winger Greg Marzhew, with Newcastle having now also dropped six of their past seven games.

Daly Cherry Evans' week has gone from bad to worse after the axed Queensland captain flopped in Manly's hiding by the Gold Coast Titans on Friday night. Billy Slater's decision to drop DCE from his Origin Game 2 side failed to illicit the sort of response the Sea Eagles would have hoped for as Titans coach Des Hasler got one over his old club to mastermind a 28-8 win. And a wild post-match incident with a fan topped it off for Cherry-Evans. On the other hand, Beau Fermor sent a statement to Slater that his axing from the Queensland side was the wrong call after starring in Gold Coast's big win. The Titans are still bottom of the ladder, while the loss sees Manly lose further ground on the top eight ahead of next week's bye. The Sea Eagles suffered a double blow, with powerhouse forward Haumole Olakau'atu also dislocating a shoulder after dropping the ball over the tryline, with the injury likely to sideline him for a number of weeks. But it was another insipid defeat away to a lowly ranked opponent that should leave Manly coach Anthony Seibold concerned. Gold Coast had 11 players unavailable, with two in Origin camps and nine out with injury. And for the first time since 2015, Manly had no players on Origin duty and were essentially at full strength, barring the absence of Lehi Hopoate (concussion). Many expected a big game from DCE after his Maroons axing but apart from one classy try assist in the first half, the Manly skipper and his side were underwhelming. Cherry-Evans had two wayward kicks that gave the Titans seven-tackle sets and failed to spark his side's spluttering attack, with fullback Tom Trbojevic also struggling in his return from injury. DCE was also left rattled in wild post-match scenes when a supporter ran onto the field and grabbed him, before being tackled to the ground by two security officials. But the Manly skipper insisted the disappointment of being dropped as Maroons skipper didn't affect his performance. "The start of the week was tough," Cherry-Evans said. "On Sunday, I got the news and on Monday I had to go to training and face the boys "After that it honestly started to feel normal. The initial news was tough but I moved on and thought we were going to come here and play some good footy. "Based on our preparation, it looked like all the signs were there. Unfortunately, the most important part of the week is showing up on game day and we didn't do that." DCE also addressed speculation the Roosters could get cold feet and pull the pin on an expected move there next season, due to his patchy form. "I sort of don't understand that stuff - I stay out of it," DCE added. "All I can do is control my footy at Manly and speculation will be speculation. But obviously we've just lost a couple in a row so it would be silly for me to be worrying about stuff like that." 'Really bad': Cricket world rocked by Steve Smith moment as Aussie hopes crushed
Australia's hopes of defending their World Test Championship (WTC) title look all but over, with Steve Smith's "gruesome" finger injury compounding the pain at Lord's. Newcastle in ‘advanced talks' for Bundesliga striker
Newcastle United are in 'advanced talks' to sign Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen, according to reports in Germany. Eddie Howe wants to sign a centre-forward this summer with Callum Wilson set to leave Newcastle when his contract expires at the end of the campaign. There is also interest in leading scorer Alexander Isak, though Newcastle do not want to sell.
