Simon Cowell's doctor feared he'd never walk again after breaking his back

Daily Mirror08-05-2025

Britain's Got Talent judge and music mogul Simon Cowell reflected on the horror electric bicycle crash that left him with a broken back in 2020
Simon Cowell revealed his surgeon feared he would never walk again after the music mogul broke his back in three places following a crash. The Britain's Got Talent judge suffered a near-death experience and broke his back when he was thrown off his electric bike while testing it out at his home in Malibu, California.
Afterwards, he was treated for a concussion and a broken arm as well as a broken back. The fall resulted in Cowell having a metal rod put into his spine, amid multiple procedures and operations. In a recent chat with Elizabeth Day on the How To Fail podcast, Simon opened up about the impact of the crash.

He admitted he 'could have died' and his surgeon was concerned about whether they could 'fix' his back.

Simon revealed: "He showed me the X-ray and he said 'Look, I'm not going to lie, Simon, I don't know if I can fix this, which means you probably won't walk and secondly, the operation could take 11 hours'.
"They said the obvious - it could go wrong - and all I could think about was my family and everything. In that moment you kind of realise the most important thing is your health and don't do stupid things."
The crash proved to be a 'wake-up call' about his life and he learned to stop taking huge risks in his life. "It was a wake-up moment, which is I'm crazy," he continued.
"It kind of happened for a reason because I thought I was fit but then when I had to do all the physio after, just walking, they make you walk very quickly, I pretty much couldn't move and then I started to walk a lot and thought 'Oh God, I was in a really bad place'."
Simon said he immediately realised he broke his back when he was thrown off the bike after it did a 'wheelie'. He added: "I shipped it in from England, couldn't wait to drive it.

"I was in the driveway and my son was there and I pulled the throttle, it did the biggest wheelie and it threw me like 7-8ft in the air. I landed on my back and the second I landed I thought 'S**t, I know I've broken my back' because I could feel it." He was quick to check whether he could move his hands and feet, and when he realised he could, he thought 'that's not too bad'.
Simon previously talked about his hobby after his second bike crash. Speaking to ex Terri Seymour on ExtraTV, he said: "My most creative time is now when I cycle, because I cycle even though it's an e-bike. I still got to pedal and I do about 10 miles a day, even though I had an accident on one.
"That was more an electric motorbike, these are called pedal-assist bikes and they're brilliant. That expression 'get back on your bike', with me, it was literal. I feel better than I did because I exercise so much more.
"Honestly, if I could rewind, I would have gone through the whole thing again. Just because I feel better now. Yeah, even though it hurt like hell at the time."

Amanda Holden shares daughter's common outfit criticism

Amanda Holden says there is one thing that her daughter Lexi can say about her outfit that will make her go and change immediately Amanda Holden has disclosed that a sharp five-word critique from her daughter about her style is all it takes to make her reconsider her wardrobe choice. Known for her bold outfit choices on Britain's Got Talent, Amanda's most controversial outfit reportedly drew over 600 viewer complaints to regulatory body Ofcom, reports Devon Live. ‌ The 54-year-old says there is a team of people who examine what she wears before she steps on stage. Amanda, however, insists the TV talent show is the "perfect opportunity to take risks". ‌ Despite this, she says there are moments of indecision, confessing that after her stylist presents "rails and rails" of potential outfits, she frequently chooses one, only to switch moments later. Amanda, who shares her home with her husband Chris Hughes and daughters Lexi, 19, and Hollie, 12, acknowledges that their opinions matter to her. Revealing to the Sun's TV magazine, she said: "My daughters normally love my outfits, but Lexi is quite critical, like her daddy." She shares a common exchange with them: "I'm like, 'Do you like this?' And she'll say: 'No!' But it doesn't change my mind if somebody doesn't like my outfit - if I think it's great, I'll wear it." Amanda admits there's one type of feedback from her eldest that will prompt an immediate costume change: "Though if Lexi says: 'It makes you look old' then I listen to that." Amanda and her co-judge, Alesha Dixon, faced a furore over their choice of attire at the Britain's Got Talent final last week, with Ofcom receiving 72 gripes for outfits deemed "too revealing for a family show". ‌ Back in July 2017, Amanda turned heads and sparked debate when she donned a daring Julien Macdonald number, which later became the year's most controversial TV topic. The mother of two wryly dubbed it a 'national crisis' at the time. ‌ Chatting with Closer magazine, Amanda quipped: "I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. I think people should have fun with fashion!" Not stopping there, she explained: "I had bits of fish wire underneath my breasts trying to hold that together... It's all quite laughable, but all everyone seems to talk about. It's been called another national crisis – but oh no, I will not be covered up." Amanda is unapologetic about her desire to "always look good", asserting: "There's no way I'd step out in my pyjamas or rock up without a lash. To preserve my own sense of dignity, I always try to look good." Last week saw the curtains close on Britain's Got Talent, with Harry Moulding clinching the title amid stiff competition. Despite an electrifying performance from The Blackout, it was Harry who charmed his way into the nation's hearts and secured the most votes.

Reality TV legend's husband 'deported from US after being detained for 4 months'

A Real Housewives of Atlanta star's estranged husband has reportedly been deported from the US after months in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centre. Porsha Williams', 43, estranged husband Simon Guobadia, 61, is said to have been released from ICE custody and deported back to Nigeria, where the businessman was born. Guobadia is no longer listed on the US Department of Homeland Security system, which has details of all those in ICE custody. A friend and business partner of Guobadia's, Tai Savet, has said he is in 'good spirits' after a difficult four months in detention. Amid ongoing protests in Los Angeles over the government's immigration crackdown, Savet told Us Weekly that Guobadia isn't angry at President Donald Trump, but would like a sit-down meeting with him. The businessman was previously held at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, Us Weekly reported, during which his status was listed as 'in ICE custody', according to the US Department of Homeland Security's records. Real Housewives of Atlanta star Williams issued a statement when Guobadia was detained in February, amid her ongoing divorce proceedings with him. 'It's disheartening to see my estranged husband make choices that have led to this outcome. At this moment, my priority is moving forward with my family,' she wrote on Instagram. Guobadia moved to the US in 1982 but reportedly overstayed his visa and was deported in 1992, local outlet WSB-TV reported. He then returned to the country and attempted to gain citizenship over the years, unsuccessfully. Guobadia's deportation comes amid President's Trump's deportation programme, which prompted violent protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration and ICE. Heartbreaking note left with newborn baby abandoned in a stranger's pram

The new series of Long Lost Family: Born Without A Trace unravels the mysteries of a baby left in a stranger's pram and another tot born in a toilet block Lisa was just a few hours old when she was left in another baby's pram with a note begging strangers to care for her. 'The note pinned to me said, 'Please take care of her, I cannot and never will be able to give her a good home where she will be happy. She is just born and needs a doctor,'' recalls an emotional Lisa, who was born in 1969. Lisa's story features on Long Lost Family : Born Without A Trace, which is returning for a seventh series, hosted once again by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell. On the show, Davina and Lisa, now 55, head to Christchurch in Dorset and visit the site where Lisa was found. Her mother had waited outside a health clinic and when she'd seen a pram left empty, she slid her own baby in, knowing she would be quickly discovered by another mother who could raise the alarm and seek medical help. ‌ ‌ 'My story started the day I was found,' recalls Lisa on the show. 'What I need to know now is what happened before. Why was I left in another child's pram? Who left me? I assume it was my birth mother. I just want to know the truth. I feel she must have been local to have known about the clinic.' Standing on the street outside the clinic, Lisa, who had a happy childhood with her adopted parents, tries to imagine her birth mother's emotional state. 'I'm trying to think how she must have been feeling, waiting for somebody to leave their pram outside and take that opportunity, waiting for that perfect moment so I would be found quickly,' says Lisa. 'I can only assume that my birth mother was young, maybe frightened. I was only hours old, she must have known what she was going to do.' Lisa grew up in Hampshire and later had a son of her own. It wasn't until 2005 that she accessed her adoption file and was given the note she was found with. 'To actually have the original note means so much to me, it's the one thing that connects me to her. So precious,' says Lisa. 'It just reminds me how much she wanted me to be happy. It takes the negativity of the abandonment away because I know she cared.' Episode one of the new series also tells the story of baby Simon who was left in an outside toilet block next to a children's home in Wales. 'I was only a few hours old when I was found,' says Simon, now 58. 'Nobody has ever come forward. As far as I know there was nothing left with me, no note, nothing, just as I was.' ‌ Simon was adopted and grew up in a village 10 miles away from the children's home. He discovered he was a foundling when he was nine years old and confided in his best friend, whose mother remembered the police investigation around Simon's birth and reassured him that every effort had been made to find his biological mother. Simon grew up and married wife Helen, and the couple went on to have three daughters. His adoptive parents are now dead. After watching Long Lost Family : Born Without A Trace in 2023, Simon told Helen he would like to find his family through DNA testing. Helen encouraged Simon but was then diagnosed with cancer, and sadly died. After her death, Simon decided to go ahead. 'In September, she passed away,' says Simon. 'It is hard, but she'd want me to carry on.' Simon doesn't have any photos of himself as a baby but host Nicky and the team came up trumps. An old black and white newsreel from 1966, appealing for Simon's mother to come forward, shows Simon as a baby being cared for by a nurse. 'That's the first time I've ever seen myself as a baby,' says Simon. 'I look as if I was cared for. There's so much to take in. It's mindblowing. I hope that by doing this now I do get my answers, because that's what I need.'
