Despite his repeated attempts to explain who he was, the security officials refused to let him in. Jitesh, who was surrounded by a group of fans, looked visibly frustrated. Just then, former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who was attending the match as a commentator, stepped out to take a phone call.

ENG vs IND: Injury concerns deepen for India on opening day in Manchester

The final session of Day 1 of the 4th Test between England and India saw Rishabh Pant ushered off the field with an injury as India ended the final session with the score at 264/4 in Manchester. Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur continue to bat for India after Sai Sudharshan too was dismissed in the final session by Stokes after a gritty fifty. Sai Sudharshan's gritty fifty While many thought Sai Sudharshan visualising his shots on the Manchester pitch a day before the Test was going to go in vain, the batter proved his critics wrong. The practice saw him visualising pull shots other than the regular shots you see in Test cricket. And to back his efforts from the other day, each and every one of his shots were put to use as he continued to fight for his side with a gritty fifty against the English bowlers on the day. Losing out on his wicket to Stokes in the final session must have been disappointing for him as he would have liked to build on to his fifty. Pant ushered off the field due to injury With Rishabh Pant looking for boundaries every now and then with his first six coming in the 61st over, Sudharshan's patient knock made the partnership tick in what was a cloudy atmosphere that forced the floodlights to be turned on in Manchester. The duo put up a 50-run stand after tea as Pant also became the first visiting wicketkeeper to score 1000 runs in England. Pant kept at it, targeting Dawson for some more boundaries on the day while Sudharshan patiently kept creeping up towards his fifty. However, bad luck followed Pant from the Lord's Test as the Indian wicketkeeper-batter had to be helped off the field after sustaining a toe injury from a yorker delivered by Chris Woakes on Day 1 of the 4th Test against England in Manchester. Pant appeared to be in significant pain after the delivery. Following medical treatment, the team decided to use a stretcher to carry him off the field due to swelling and a minor cut on his right leg. While Jadeja replaced him on the day, Sai Sudharshan too followed Pant back as he lost his wicket to Stokes, caught at backward sq. leg by Carse. With two fresh batters at the crease, India had to start all over again to build a stable partnership and end the day without losing any more wickets. India-England share first two sessions on Day 1 Earlier, India's solid start in the 4th Test at Old Trafford began to unravel in the post-lunch session as England fought back with key wickets. After a wicketless first session where openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul built a solid 78-run stand, the Three Lions made inroads through Chris Woakes, who dismissed Rahul for 38 in the 30th over, caught in the slips. Rahul fell short of a half-century, leaving India one short of a 100-run opening partnership. Debutant Sai Sudharsan came in at No. 3, looking to make an impact. Jaiswal, meanwhile, found it tough going against Brydon Carse, who extracted movement off the pitch. Despite some discomfort, Jaiswal reached a gritty fifty off 96 balls, becoming the first Indian opener in 50 years to score a half-century in Manchester. However, he couldn't push on as left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, returning to Test cricket after eight years, dismissed him for 58, caught in the slips. Dawson's breakthrough tilted momentum England's way. Sudharsan narrowly avoided becoming the next casualty after edging a delivery down leg, only for Ollie Smith to drop the chance. However, skipper Shubman Gill didn't survive for long, falling LBW to Ben Stokes for just 12 runs in the 50th over. From a dominant start, India slipped to 149/3 at tea, with Rishabh Pant and Sudharsan at the crease. Earlier, under overcast skies, Jaiswal and Rahul showed composure against disciplined spells from Archer and Woakes, helping India to a steady start before England's resurgence. Rishabh Pant has been taken for scans and further treatment (Images via X/@SahilMalhotra) in Manchester : India suffered a major setback on Day 1 of the 4th Test at Old Trafford as Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after getting hit on the right foot. The wicketkeeper-batter, who was batting confidently on 37 off 48 balls, was injured while trying to play a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. The injury came soon after the dismissal of captain Shubman Gill. Pant missed the shot completely and the ball struck him hard on the boot. England appealed for LBW, but the on-field umpire gave it not out. UltraEdge confirmed a faint under-edge, saving Pant from being dismissed, but he was clearly in pain after the impact. Pant fell to the ground in discomfort, and medical attention was given as umpires called for drinks. There was swelling and some bleeding on his right foot, and he couldn't stand. He was helped off the field by the physio, and a medical cart was used to take him away. Shubman Gill came to the medical centre to see Rishabh Pant where he was receiving first aid. He was stretchered off, accompanied by fielding coach T Dilip, doctor and physio Yogesh Parmar, and two security staff and left the ground in an ambulance. Yes, he will return No, he will not return Earlier in the day, India were off to a solid start with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul taking them to 78/0 at lunch. However, the second session saw the fall of quick wickets in the form of Rahul, Jaiswal, and Gill. Sai Sudharsan held firm with a gritty 61 but was eventually dismissed by Ben Stokes while playing a pull shot. Ravindra Jadeja came on to bat for India replacing Pant, and will look to steer India to a solid total alongside Shardul Thakur. Ayush Mhatre Equals Brendon McCullum's 24-Year-Old Batting Record Of Scoring...

Last Updated: In the ongoing second youth Test against the English team, Mhatre scored 80 runs from 90 balls in the first innings and 124 runs from 80 balls in the second. Ayush Mhatre is the captain of the India U-19 team, and on Wednesday (July 23), the right-handed batter from Mumbai was on fire with the bat against the England U-19 side. He opened for the visitors in the second innings of the second youth Test at County Ground in Chelmsford and completed his century in just 64 balls. The century on Wednesday is Mhatre's second century in the youth Test. In the first innings of the first youth Test played at Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham last week, Mhatre scored 102 runs from 115 balls. Mhatre, who plays for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, smacked 126 runs from 80 balls with the help of 13 fours and six sixes on Wednesday, and his batting strike rate was 157.50. In the first innings of the ongoing match, he scored 80 runs from 90 balls with a strike rate of 88.89. Mhatre, who is 18 years old, scored a total of 206 runs in the second youth Test from just 170 balls, and his strike rate in the game was 121.17. The batting strike rate of 121.17 helped Mhatre equal former New Zealand captain and star batter Brendon McCullum's 24-year-old batting record. During the 2001 New Zealand-South Africa youth Test played in Lincoln from February 4 to 7, McCullum also scored more than 200 runs in the match with a strike rate of 100+. In that fixture, McCullum scored 186 runs from 172 balls (SR 108.13) in the first innings after coming out to bat at No. 6 and 46 not out from 42 balls (SR 109.52) in the second innings. Interestingly, like Mhatre, McCullum was also the captain of the New Zealand team in that match. Suryavanshi out for 0 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who was India's best batter in the five-match youth ODI series against the English team, failed to fire with the bat in the second innings of the second youth Test. He, in fact, was not able to open his account as well and was sent back to the pavilion for a first-ball duck by Alex Green. Green breached his defence and shattered his stumps. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 22:47 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
