Will the bull run in defence stocks continue? Long-term growth seen, but valuations flash warning signs

Mint2 days ago

Defence stocks have been on a blistering rally, with the NSE Defence Index soaring 20 percent in the last one month, vastly outperforming the Nifty 50, which rose by only about 1 percent during the same period. With India sharpening its strategic focus on indigenous defence manufacturing amid global geopolitical tensions, many investors are wondering: Will the bull run in defence stocks continue? While the long-term fundamentals remain strong, market experts warn that valuations have already priced in much of the near-term earnings growth.
The bull case for defence stocks is rooted in a larger geopolitical and policy shift. According to Omniscience Capital, which manages a defence-focused smallcase, the Indian government is likely to ramp up defence spending from the current ~2 percent of GDP to 3–4 percent over the next decade. With India expected to become a $10 trillion economy by 2035, this would imply an annual defence budget exceeding USD 300 billion, or ₹ 30 lakh crore—translating to a 16–17 percent CAGR in defence expenditure over the next ten years.
Omniscience Capital's report, 'Operation Sindoor: An Inflection Point for Bharat's Omni Defence Strategy', argues that the recent military and security operations have highlighted the need for a robust, future-ready defence infrastructure—not just to protect borders, but also to secure India's digital ecosystems, trade routes, and overseas strategic assets.
India's domestic defence production crossed ₹ 1.4 lakh crore in FY25, with DPSUs (Defence Public Sector Undertakings) contributing around ₹ 1.1 lakh crore, or 78 percent. Of this, ₹ 90,000 crore came from 8 listed DPSUs, forming 66 percent of the total DPSU output. The government now aims to double the total defence production to ₹ 3 lakh crore by 2029. Even assuming DPSUs maintain a 60 percent share, their combined output would need to grow at 18 percent CAGR, hitting ₹ 1.8 lakh crore by 2029.
Analysts project that the turnover of listed DPSUs will grow by 18 percent in FY26 and 22 percent in FY27, while 9 unlisted DPSUs are estimated to generate over ₹ 20,000 crore in FY26 alone. Private players are also expected to play a larger role, diversifying the sector's investment potential.
However, while the sector's structural growth story remains intact, concerns around high valuations are surfacing. The median trailing P/E of listed DPSUs stands at 57, with forward P/E for FY26 and FY27 at 45 and 36, respectively. Valuations are even steeper for private defence companies, making investors vulnerable to corrections if expectations aren't met.
Dr. Vikas Gupta, CEO of Omniscience Capital, said, 'The future of India's defence sector is undoubtedly bright. However, we urge investors to remain valuation-conscious. Much of the high growth has already been factored into stock prices, particularly in the short term.'
Despite these cautionary signals, experts argue that the rally has legs over the long run. India's strategic ambitions—to become the world's third-largest economy by 2027–28 and a 7–8 percent contributor to global GDP—will require significant defence investment. The Indian Armed Forces are under pressure to modernize, especially with neighboring countries likely to boost their own defence spending in response to India's growing capabilities.
Moreover, a strong fiscal position and global interest in India as a defence exporter could help sustain capex in the sector, while also creating tailwinds for listed players.
Overall, the bull run in defence stocks has been driven by compelling macro themes: rising geopolitical risk, India's focus on self-reliance, and ambitious spending targets. However, with valuations running ahead of fundamentals in many cases, the question for investors is no longer whether defence is a growth story—it is how much of that growth is already in the price. Experts suggest a balanced approach: remain invested for the long-term transformation underway, but be selective and valuation-conscious in the short run. The next leg of the rally may belong not to the sector as a whole, but to the well-positioned companies with sustained earnings visibility.

Stocks to buy or sell: Osho Krishan of Angel One suggests buying Paytm, Titagarh Rail shares today

Stock market today: India's main stock indexes opened higher on Thursday, reflecting gains from Asian counterparts, with declines in Treasury yields and the US dollar. The Nifty 50 increased by 0.29% to 24,691.2, while the BSE Sensex gained 0.24% to reach 81,196.08 as of 9:15 IST. On Wednesday, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) shifted to a buying position, purchasing equities worth ₹ 1,076.18 crore, based on exchange data. In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi, Shanghai's SSE Composite index, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng were all performing positively, whereas Japan's Nikkei 225 index reported a decline. Domestically, investors are anticipating the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) policy announcement on Friday, where it is broadly expected that the central bank will reduce key lending rates by 25 basis points for the third consecutive meeting. Market analysts suggest that both geopolitical and economic developments may impact markets in the short term. A significant concern is the possibility of Russia retaliating in response to recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian aircraft. The severity of this situation and its consequences remain uncertain at this stage. Notably, the major economic news is the significant drop in the US ISM PMI data, indicating a pronounced slowdown in the US economy. The yield on the US 10-year bond has fallen to 4.36%, and in light of the decelerating US economy, it is expected to decline further. This trend could be beneficial for emerging markets like India in the medium term. The broader market kept the market participants active as we witnessed a slight improvement in the Advance-Decline ratio from the previous session. The benchmark index continued its struggles near the 20 DEMA for the entire session, highlighting the significance of these technical parameters. The current outlook for the index appears to be predominantly sideways, with no substantial movement expected until a decisive breakout occurs beyond the 24,700-24,800 zone, which could catalyse a favorable upward trend. On the other hand, recent market developments suggest that a support level around 24,550-24,500 is likely to materialize, providing a cushion for the index. Should this level be breached, it could lead to further corrective movements toward the bullish gap identified around 24,380 in the near term. This situation presents both challenges and potential opportunities for market participants and thus requires a pragmatic approach until the trend becomes clear. As we move forward, it is essential to adopt a stock-centric strategy, particularly during the current period of consolidation that continues to impact the indices. This approach should be accompanied by a strong emphasis on risk management to navigate the market effectively. On stocks to buy on Thursday, Osho Krishan of Angel One recommended two stocks - One 97 Communications Ltd (Paytm), and Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. Paytm share price has demonstrated a consolidation breakout after a brief consolidation above the cluster of its EMAs on the daily charts, indicating a robust upward trend. From a technical analysis perspective, the stock is currently exhibiting a pattern of 'Cup and Handle', supported by favorable indicators that enhance its bullish sentiment. Furthermore, considering the risk-reward dynamics, Paytm share price is in a favourable position and appears poised to maintain its upward trajectory in the near term. This situation presents a significant opportunity for investors seeking growth potential. Hence, we recommend to BUY Paytm shares around ₹ 930-920, keeping a stop loss of ₹ 885 for a potential Target of ₹ 1,000-1,020. Titagarh Rail Systems share price has recently emerged from a consolidation phase and is on the verge of a strong breakout, indicating an initial sign of a counter-trend. Additionally, the positive crossover observed between the 20-day and 50-day Exponential Moving Averages (DEMA) represents a favourable development in the technical analysis. This progression is further corroborated by positive movements in the 14-period RSI indicator, followed by pent-up trading volumes, suggesting a constructive outlook for the stock's performance. Hence, we recommend to BUY Titagarh Rail Systems share price around ₹ 920, keeping a stop loss of ₹ 870 for a potential Target of ₹ 1,000-1,040. It's like the Devil quoting from the scriptures: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Bilawal Bhutto-led delegation in US

Washington DC: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya slammed Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and called Pakistan's delegation to New York "the Devil quoting from the scriptures." Speaking to the media at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, BJP MP Surya said, "Bhutto has been calling his delegation a peace delegation, and it is quite ironic that the Pakistdelegation is speaking the language of peace. It's like the Devil quoting from the scriptures. For a country that is trying to create fake heroes by promoting failed generals to field marshal, they don't know what true leaders look like." Comparing India's military equipment to Pakistan's, he said that the latter is surviving on "cheap Chinese imports." He added that it is hard for Pakistan to digest high-quality military hardware and democratic leadership in India."Pakistan has been surviving on cheap Chinese imports, including military hardware, which spectacularly failed on the battlefield. So perhaps it is hard for them to digest high-quality, high-calibre military hardware as well as strong democratic leadership on the other side of the border..." he presented a contrast between Indians and Pakistanis in the USA. He named Ramzi Yousef, the man behind the 1993 World Trade Centre bomb and David Coleman Headley, charged with conspiracy in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, to present his case against Pakistan. "I would just want to take this opportunity to give you 5 names from India and Pakistan, which clearly demonstrate what India stands for and what Pakistan stands for in America. Ramzi Yousef, 1993 World Trade Centre bomb. David Coleman Headley had made 26/11 charges of conspiracy... Now, 5 Indian names - Indra Nooyi, Sundar Pichai, Ajay Bagga, Satya Nadella, Kash Patel...- I don't have to give an explanation on an introduction to any of these. This is as stark a difference as it can be between these two countries. So Mr. Bhutto's two-day adventure here today, a two-day trip here, will not wash away this proven track record of Pakistan," the BJP MP Bhutto Zardari led a Pakistani delegation in New York, and addressing a press conference at the UN Headquarters in New York, he called India's Operation Sindoor "illegal strikes." He said that Pakistan was only acting in self-defence, as reported by Tejasvi Surya is a part of India's delegation to the USA led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The delegation arrived in the US on Wednesday. The delegation includes Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejasvi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita (all from BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), former Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora.

Retail inflation likely to ease to 6-year low of 3% in May on cooling food prices: UBI

Retail inflation, or the Consumer Price Index (CPI), will continue to moderate to 3.0 per cent in May, a six-year low, mainly due to the sequential moderation in prices of cereals and pulses even as most other segments started to strengthen, according to a Union Bank of India (UBI) report. As per the inflation data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, retail inflation in April fell to 3.16 per cent from 3.34 per cent in March. CPI inflation is a key economic indicator that reflects the rate at which prices of goods and services consumed by households are increasing over time. Further, the report said that inflation, excluding vegetables, stayed steady at 4.11 per cent, while core inflation slightly increased to 4.18 per cent, mainly because of the low base from last year. However, the report added that weak demand and stable prices of most commodities (except precious metals) are expected to keep core inflation under control. The report added that inflation excluding gold likely stayed low at 3.4 per cent, up slightly from 3.3 per cent in April CPI slips to six-year lows, as the decline in inflation is attributed to a decrease in the prices of vegetables, pulses, and products, fruits, meat and fish, personal care and effects, and cereals and overall inflation declined 18 basis points in April 2025 compared to last year's to the data, core inflation remained almost flat at 4.09 per cent in April, while core inflation excluding gold stayed unchanged at 3.3 per CPI ex-transport, post-recording a spike in March (4.26 per cent), has again softened to 4.18 per cent. Within the core inflation category, personal care inflation has moderated from 13.50 per cent in March to 12.90 per inflation is defined as a measure of inflation that removes volatile, short-term price changes in key categories, primarily food and energy, in order to portray a steadier, long-term trend in price increases. The inflation level gives confidence to economists and analysts, as current inflation rates are within the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) manageable range of 2-6 per cent. Retail inflation last breached the Reserve Bank of India's 6 per cent upper tolerance level in October 2024. Since then, it has been in the 2-6 per cent range, which the RBI considers manageable. Food prices were a concern for Indian policymakers, who wished to sustain retail inflation around 4 per the RBI's April monetary policy review meeting, the central bank said that inflation is expected to remain under control in the financial year 2025-26.
