Australia's Socceroos are on the brink of securing a direct qualification in the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a tense 1–1 draw against Japan . The match will begin at 7:00 PM AWST on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Optus Stadium in Perth and will be watched by a lively home crowd eager to see their national team take a big step toward the expanded World Cup in North America. This fixture was the second-last in Australia's AFC Third Round qualifying campaign. In Perth, Japan fielded an experimental squad after clinching qualification. Australia hasn't defeated Japan in 16 years, but coach Tony Popovic insists that his team has evolved and can nearly guarantee qualification in Perth. Popovic praised the team's growth since a prior draw with Japan last October.Australia has two final qualifiers: against Japan (home) and against Saudi Arabia (away). They currently sit three points above Saudi Arabia with a superior goal difference of +9 and a three-point lead, meaning a win over Japan would virtually secure second place, if Saudi Arabia loses to Bahrain.A draw could also suffice, depending on Saudi and Indonesian results. A loss would require a strong draw in Jeddah to hold off the Saudis.A key figure in the Australian squad is defender Alessandro Circati . The 21‑year‑old returned from an ACL injury ahead of schedule and is now fully fit to play for his hometown side in Perth. His return boosts the Socceroos' back line. Mat Ryan, the veteran goalkeeper, also remains confident and focused on helping Australia secure the points needed.Midfielders Riley McGree and Ryan Teague bring fresh energy. McGree adds experience, while Teague seeks to build on his recent national team debut.Veteran Milos Degenek has warned of the risks associated with the intercontinental playoff path. Australia has taken that path in 2018 and 2022 and sees it as a tougher, more uncertain path. He hoped for direct qualification through securing top-two status in Group C.With only two matches left, this is the Socceroos' final window to avoid a playoff. Popovic and his team will be hoping to utilize the team's improved form, strong defence, and home advantage. However, the campaign's fate also hinges on results from other matches. Saudi Arabia and Indonesia's games could influence Australia's path. For now, one win or even two draws could deliver them straight to North America's expanded 48-team World Cup 2026.

Who does Mohammad Kaif thinks can become next ODI captain after 2027 World Cup? :'Rohit, who is almost 38, steps down…will be ready to take over'
Shubman Gill, after his success in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar, has been given the reins as vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which is in T20 format. Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif predicted that after the 2027 ODI World Cup, Gill might even take over the captaincy for the ODI format. 'In the last three years, Gill has scored 2,000 runs. He is the future captain. He is already leading the Test team, and is now vice-captain in T20Is. When Rohit, who is almost 38, steps down after the 2027 World Cup, Gill will be ready to take over,' Kaif said on his YouTube channel. 'Shubman Gill, as captain, created opportunities with both hands in this series (India vs England). When he became captain, there were many questions as to why he was made captain, looking at his Test record. A young captain reached England under a lot of pressure with a young team. He answered with his bat and it came to a point where he was compared to breaking Sir Don Bradman's record. Such a strong comeback with the bat,' Kaif said. 'I have more clarity where personally I need to work on as a captain …,' Shubman Gill said after famous win at the Oval. Gill was also taunting those who have questioned his selection calls, criticising him for not including specialist bowlers and backing all-rounders. 'There would always be opinions and, in hindsight, could have done this, could have done that. But I think what matters for me is… in that moment… When your decision goes well, people obviously praise you. When it doesn't go well, I'm aware that there are going to be shots taken at me… I'm fine, because at the end of the day, I know that I made a decision which was the best for our team,' he said.

Even as pictures and clips of India stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's training sessions ahead of their potential India return in October continue to be shared widely on social media, a latest report claims that the BCCI will hold discussions with the two regarding their international futures. According to Dainik Jagran, depending on outcome of the discussions, a decision will be made in regard to the direction of Indian ODI team. There's report of the board zeroing in on Shreyas Iyer as the next ODI captain but it's a decision that hinges on whether Rohit wants to continue playing the format and for how long. Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from Tests and T20Is with the selection committee successfully overseeing transitions in the two formats. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has reportedly been rewarded with his contract extended toll June 2026 after the team won two ICC trophies in his tenure. Luis Suarez Fills Lionel Messi Void As Inter Miami Beat Tigres 2-1
Luis Suarez scored a penalty in each half to give Inter Miami a 2-1 victory over Tigres UANL on Wednesday, stepping up to fill the void after Lionel Messi was ruled out of the Leagues Cup quarter-final clash. Messi, who has battled a "minor" muscle injury since a Leagues Cup group match on August 2, returned Saturday after a two-week absence, scoring a goal after coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, the 38-year-old World Cup winner was ruled out against Tigres as Inter advanced in the cross-border club competition for teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga-MX. In a duel that produced few scoring chances, veteran Uruguay striker Suarez was the difference as Inter kept alive their hopes of regaining the title they won in 2023, during Messi's first season in MLS. Things swung Miami's way in the 20th minute when Javier Aquino slid to intercept a cross and the ball hit his left arm in the area. The referee awarded the penalty and the 38-year-old Suarez converted. Tempers flared, with Suarez moving to calm things down after Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul and Uruguayan compatriot Fernando Gorriaran exchanged words. Inter coach Javier Mascherano was sent off at half time, receiving a red card for heated protestations to officials after injury time dragged on past what had been indicated. Mascherano watched from a front row of the stands when Tigres grabbed their equalizer in the 67th minute, Angel Correa slipping between two defenders and beating Miami keeper Oscar Ustari. Another handball by Aquino in the 87th minute, confirmed by VAR, gave Miami another penalty and Suarez converted again, this time going to left as goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman dived in the opposite direction. Miami's game with Tigres was one of four Leagues Cup quarter-finals set for Wednesday. Mexico's Toluca face Orlando City before Los Angeles Galaxy host Pachuca, while the Seattle Sounders take on Puebla at home. There's more at stake than the Leagues Cup trophy. Both finalists and the third-place match winner will qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup, with the Leagues Cup champion securing direct entry to the Champions Cup round of 16.
