Targeted attack on Jews? Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner's death in Midtown shooting raises questions

Time of India3 days ago
Wesley LePatner was the Blackstone executive killed in the Manhattan shooting.
The Blackstone executive who was killed by 27-year-old crazed gunman Shane Tamura was a well-known Jewish figure in the community who even received an award in 2023 for her generosity to the community.
The identification of the Wesley turned the random shooting into a targeted killing as many commentators said the earlier theories linking Tamura's manifesto, blaming the NFL, do not hold water after it's found that one of the victims was a Jew.

?
A senior managing director of financial giant Blackstone, Wesley LePatner joined Blackstone in 2014 and served as the global head of Core+ Real Estate and chief executive officer for Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust — a $53 billion property owner, according to Bloomberg.
The Yale graduate previously worked at Goldman Sachs for more than a decade and serves on numerous Big Apple boards, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
'We are heartbroken to share that our colleague, Wesley LePartner, was among those who lost theor lives in the tragic incident at 345 Park Avenue,' Blackstone told The New York Post in a statement. 'Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed.

'She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond.
'She embodied the best of Blackstone. Our prayers are with her husband, children and family.'
'This has nothing to do with NFL'
Right-wing commentator and President Donald Trump's aide Laura Loomer trained the gun at New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and said that the group that was behind the shooting was the same group that Mamdani was photographed with.
"The Blackstone building is one of the locations that was listed as a 'Globalize the Intifada Zone of Operation' by the Palestinian jihadi group 'Within Our Lifetime' @WOLPalestine. This is the same group that @ZohranKMamdani has been photographed protesting with. Witnesses said they heard the shooter yell free Palestine. Blackstone has a Jewish CEO and the shooter shot and killed a Jewish executive. This has nothing to do with the NFL.
This shooting was another targeted attack on Jews by a pro-jihadi domestic terrorist who aligned with the Palestinian movement," Loomer posted.
Midtown shooting: NFL connetion of shooter Shane Tamura
Mayor Eric Adams said shooter Shane Tamura probably targeted the NFL office, as a strange manifesto was found on him in which he blamed football for his brain disease CTE -- chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is caused by repeated head trauma possible from playing football for a long time but Tamura never played football professionally.

Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh willing to take dope test amid drug abuse allegations: Lawyer

Chandigarh: Waris Punjab De chief and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh , currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), is willing to undergo a dope test , his lawyer said. The statement comes in response to allegations of drug abuse levelled by his own associates, as mentioned in a Punjab Police chargesheet filed in the Ajnala court last month. Advocate Imaan Singh Khara, who serves as the legal advisor and chief spokesperson of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De recently met Amritpal in Dibrugarh jail. He told the TOI, "Bhai Sahib (Amritpal Singh) has said that instead of levelling false allegations, Punjab Police may get his dope test done. He has said if Punjab police want, they can come to Dibrugarh to get the test done." Khara added that Amritpal has demanded that once he undergoes a dope test, the political leaders accusing him of drug abuse should also be made to take the test. As per the police chargesheet, Amritpal's two associates, Bhagwant Singh alias and Varinder Singh Fauji, in their disclosure statements recorded before the police, claimed that Amritpal was "hooked on drugs" in Punjab and "consumed them in Assam's Dibrugarh jail too". Khara and advocate Ritu Raj Singh Sandhu, the counsel representing the associates of Amritpal, have dismissed the disclosure statements, accusing the police of trying to "defame" Amritpal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hi Tabbola Undo Khara alleged that "police got the signatures on blank papers". On Thursday, when brought to a court in Amritsar in connection with the Feb 2023 Ajnala police station attack case, Bhagwant Singh 'Pradhan Mantri Bajeke' was heard shouting and denying that he made any statement on Amritpal taking drugs. As he saw the media persons, Bajeke, who was escorted by policemen, alleged that "we were beaten up and made to sign thousands of papers and recorded on video." Khara said he met Amritpal in Dibrugarh jail on July 24 in connection with "a writ petition we will file in the Supreme Court to challenge the NSA" under which Amritpal is detained in Dibrugarh jail for the third consecutive year now. Khara said, "It took two suitcases of documents weighing around 25 kg, which I brought from Dibrugarh jail, to prepare the grounds for the writ petition to challenge the NSA in the Supreme Court. The documents include challan papers in Hari Nau (Gurpreet Singh) murder case, papers of grounds of detention of NSA, order of detention, and others. The documents are very voluminous and are in both English and Punjabi language. These are single-size printed legal size papers." Khara said Amritpal was very upbeat about "Mission 2027" to prepare for the 2027 Punjab elections "to safeguard the interests of Punjab" and to "make Punjab drug-free." Khara added that Amritpal told him that "search was on for a party candidate for Tarn Taran by-poll and a good person would be brought forward." Ends MSID:: 123046954 413 |

World economies reel as Trump delivers blow with new modified reciprocal tariff

Trump announced late Thursday that dozens of economies, including the European Union, will face new tariff rates of between 10 and 41 percent. read more Global markets reeled Friday after President Donald Trump's tariffs barrage against nearly all US trading partners as governments looked down the barrel of a seven-day deadline before higher duties take effect. Trump announced late Thursday that dozens of economies, including the European Union, will face new tariff rates of between 10 and 41 percent. However, implementation will be on August 7 rather than Friday as previously announced, the White House said. This gives governments a window to rush to strike deals with Washington setting more favorable conditions. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Neighboring Canada, one of the biggest US trade partners, was hit with 35 percent levies, up from 25 percent, effective Friday – but with wide-ranging, current exemptions remaining in place. The tariffs are a demonstration of raw economic power that Trump sees putting US exporters in a stronger position, while encouraging domestic manufacturing by keeping out foreign imports. But the muscular approach has raised fears of inflation and other economic fallout in the world's biggest economy. Stock markets in Hong Kong, London and New York slumped as they digested the turmoil, while weak US employment data added to worries. Trump's actions come as debate rages over how best to steer the US economy, with the Federal Reserve this week deciding to keep interest rates unchanged, despite massive political pressure from the White House to cut. Data Friday showed US job growth missing expectations for July, while unemployment ticked up to 4.2 percent from 4.1 percent. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 dropped 1.6 percent, while the Nasdaq tumbled 2.2 percent. Political goals Trump raised duties on around 70 economies, from a current 10 percent level imposed in April when he unleashed 'reciprocal' tariffs citing unfair trade practices. The new, steeper levels listed in an executive order vary by trading partner. Any goods 'transshipped' through other jurisdictions to avoid US duties would be hit with an additional 40 percent tariff, the order said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD But Trump's duties also have a distinctly political flavor, with the president using separate tariffs to pressure Brazil to drop the trial of his far-right ally, former president Jair Bolsonaro. He also warned of trade consequences for Canada, which faces a different set of duties, after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September. In targeting Canada, the White House cited its failure to 'cooperate in curbing the ongoing flood of fentanyl and other illicit drugs' – although Canada is not a major source of illegal narcotics. By contrast, Trump gave more time to Mexico, delaying for 90 days a threat to increase its tariffs from 25 percent to 30 percent. But exemptions remain for a wide range of Canadian and Mexican goods entering the United States under an existing North American trade pact. Carney said his government was 'disappointed' with the latest rates hike but noted that with exclusions the US average tariff on Canadian goods remains one of the lowest among US trading partners. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Tears up' rule book With questions hanging over the effectiveness of bilateral trade deals struck – including with the EU and Japan – the outcome of Trump's overall plan remains uncertain. 'No doubt about it – the executive order and related agreements concluded over the past few months tears up the trade rule book that has governed international trade since World War II,' said Wendy Cutler, senior vice president of the Asia Society Policy Institute. On Friday, Trump said he would consider distributing a tariff 'dividend' to Americans. Notably excluded from Friday's drama was China, which is in the midst of negotiations with the United States. Washington and Beijing at one point brought tit-for-tat tariffs to triple-digit levels, but have agreed to temporarily lower these duties and are working to extend their truce. Those who managed to strike deals with Washington to avert steeper threatened levies included Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea and the European Union. Among other tariff levels adjusted in Trump's latest order, Switzerland now faces a higher 39 percent duty.
